I'm looking to purchase a model 41 pistol. The serial number is 3982. I did see a chart on Rimfire Central showing dates of manufacture. The closest I can figure is it is an early 1958. It does have a 7 3/8 barrel with muzzle break. It also has the tick mark on the barrel to line up the external weight. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks, Dan.

Looks like a first year production, there are many posts here, about them,
I believe the serial Numbers started in the 1400. That line is to set the Olympic counter weights, the weights have more hash marks to line up with the one on the barrel. Make sure the Lazy & is on the slide as well as the barrel. It should also have the Dark oiled walnut grips, and the original magazine would be staked sides. Because of the mfg. flow pattern and shipping pattern - 3982 may be 57 OR 58 - Jinks/S&W can give actual ship date
