Default 5904 New In Box Value?

Normally I am a S&W revolver guy, but I have been getting into 3rd Gen Smiths as of late. I recently picked up a like new, never fired 3953. Yesterday I picked up this 5904. It was test fired by the original owner. It is as new. It comes with the box, all paperwork, unused cleaning brush and sight adjustment tool. I paid $400 even. Is that considered reasonable?

Not a fan of the adj sights or early square trigger guard........

I'd give $400 a "better than OK" to "Good" price ....... given that these aren't "collectable" yet (IMHO) and there are a good number of "shooter grade" guns that show up from time to time.......

That was a very reasonable price for a LNIB pistol. A pistol of that age would fall under the early 3rd gen grip recall. If there is no dimple on the bottom of the grip, call S&W for a replacement.

Yes I already look it up. There is no dimple. I am calling today.

I actually am a fan of the adj sights and square trigger guard on the full size 3rd gen S&Ws. I was actually looking for this variation. Did you know S&W switched to the round trigger guard because it was cheaper and easier to produce?

That's a fabulous price for that condition.

It's like a time capsule.

It would have sold for easy double that in an online auction.

Great score.

Yes I was aware of that. I just got off the phone with S&W and they no longer have replacement grips. Off to Ebay I guess.

Well I just looked on Ebay and the cheapest replacement is $40! I will live with the old one until I can find a cheaper one. I probably won't be carrying this one too much as I have a ton of other carry guns. If worse comes to worse I can put a Hogue rubber grip on it. But I really hate those. On second thought I won't be doing that.

I think you did fantastic considering the LNIB condition. I'd have gone for that deal for certain! And I'm not even a blued 3rd Gen kind of guy! There are none so far in my 3rd Gen accumulation.

Nor am I a "squared trigger" kind of guy although I finally caved in last month and bought an early squared trigger 4506 in lieu of my long sought after (and impossible to find in MA) 4506-1. I paid too much for it, but the timing and the overall deal made it work for me.

So I say CONGRATULATIONS!!! And the same on your NIB 3953! Sure wish I had one!

Here is the As New 3953 I picked up a couple of months ago. I paid $380 for it. No box or papers, and just one mag.

As far as I am concerned it is the ultimate single stack 9mm. Not too small, not too big. Most importantly NO PLASTIC! (Though I have to admit, I think my Shield 9mm is an excellent little gun).

I really prefer to have a consistent trigger pull on a carry gun, that is why I went with the 3953 over the 3913. I really like the DAO trigger.

Nice package at a good price.....

Just letting you know those features.... may influence my estimate on value..... and what the market value may be.

Because the sq triggerguard was only produced for a couple of years...... there have been a number of threads on difficulty finding holsters for these guns.........folks looking for "shooter/carry guns" seem to gravitate to fixed sights and round triggerguard.

Also by the late 80s all the "experts" were moving away from the offhand trigger finger on the front of the triggerguard grip.

Beautiful! Despite being well over my budget for this year, I'd still snap up a nice condition Model 3953 in a heartbeat if I could only find one! Unfortunately, it would have to be in state to buy because it is not on our MA EOPS list. And the chances of finding one in any sort of decent shape in state are somewhere between zero and nil.

I passed up a cosmetically damaged one back in April because it would have been too risky and possibly expensive to try to have it fixed. I still wonder sometimes if I did the right thing. One never knows.

No complaints with my 3913 or either of my two plastic 9mm Shields (the second one bought by mistake! ). But the butter-smooth trigger on that marred 3953 I passed up was truly something special.

That's a nice firearm at a nice price. I bought one in similar condition without the box, but with two magazines for $370 about three years ago.

Your 3953 is an even better deal, at least I think so. I looked at the same gun as TTSH did, but it sold while I was dithering. I'd like a DAO compact for my alleged collection.

TTSH, how do you buy a gun "by mistake"? I've bought some things by mistake, but not a gun.

The cosmetically damaged one I found was way out in Auburn. Don't tell me you spotted another one???

It was part of the Atlantic Tactical buying frenzy that took place before the new owner, Safariland, came in and pulled the plug on civilian sales. I went in one day to buy an M&P9 and walked out with a 9mm Shield instead! Lenny more or less gave me the big zing. 24 hours later, all civilian sales were over with. I still don't have that M&P9.

No it's the same one that we discussed.

Ouch! I was at Atlantic with a friend who was looking for a compact gun of some sort. As usual for him, he dithered and when he want back, they told him that they couldn't sell it to him.

I looked longingly at a P239, but decided not to buy it at the price they had. As it turns out, I didn't regret not buying it.

My friend ended up getting a really good deal on the M&P 380 from Carl when he was running a special back during the winter.

The only 3rd Gens on my list right now are another 457, either stainless or a Zander two tone, and a 395x DAO. I'd go for a 4513TSW, but don't have much hope of one popping up locally.

You went out and visited my buddy Jack and his crusty old bossman & friends? Well, I'll be damned!

I think a lot of folks were caught by surprise when Safariland suddenly pulled the plug on civilian sales. Only one person in MA was extremely pleased... Carl!!!

Don't forget that reverse two-tone 457 out in Worcester. It came back and I believe it's still there.

My 3rd Gen Want List is awfully short these days after the 4506 buy. I'm only putting 3rd Gens from the EOPS list on my official Want List these days. Just two guns: a CS45 and a 908S. And both would have to be near flawless.

Not that I wouldn't buy others if found... but no sense in getting excited to buy something when there is little to no chance of being able to find one within MA.

The 3953 was actually a great deal. I found it on Gunbroker and the shop was in the next town over. No shipping or transfer fee. Under $400 out the door. It was a NYPD cops backup gun. It was issued to him and he never carried it, and never fired it for that matter. He traded it at the shop I bought it from when he moved down here.

I have put just over 100 rounds through it thus far and it is a very sweet shooter.

I don't think I'm misusing the word. It just sounds funny when the item in question is a "gun" and not the wrong box of detergent or cake mix your wife sent you out to get.

Innocently, accidentally or intentionally, Lenny gave me the big zing. Or as my not-very-happy wife put it, I let Lenny give me the big zing. Did he know the store was about to stop sales to civilians the very next day without any warning? I guess you'd have to ask him. But it sure left me with a whole bunch of egg on my face.

Atlantic isn't more than 20 minutes away on a bad day. I think we talked to Adam, who was very nice.

I think the people working there were also caught by surprise. I don't buy the "liability issue" story that was spun, but it's their store so they can make their own policies.

From what I remember their policy was public safety only, but not limited to law enforcement. Active and retired as well.

I'm aware of the Zander two tone 457, but haven't roused the energy to drive out there yet.

Well, of course, it was the new owner (Safariland) that shut off all civilian sales. Had nothing to do with liability insurance but that made for a convenient cover story. So did the store people have any advance notice that this was coming? Only they know the truthful answer to that.

Lenny had other underlying motivation to misguide me into an alternate buy, but that's a story best left for some other time.

Correct. They have stretched the typical "LEO only" policy to the max. Military veterans and retired LEO's qualify as do EMT's. Have you inquired if you qualify? Probably doesn't matter anyway as the super "Grand Opening" buys are most likely long gone by now. I'm back to doing all my new gun business with Carl again and that's fine by me.

First time I looked at it way back when, it was in excellent shape. I even made a substantial cash offer to buy it in combination with another nice 3rd Gen they had in stock at the time. Eventually, it came out that the other gun had been informally promised to some young stud pal of the owner and that was why the deal was nixed. Terrible ethics out there but such is life. It's just the culture of that shop (in particular) and the area.

Anyway, who knows its condition upon its return visit. I haven't been back to that shop lately. It's not exactly on my favorite shops list.
