HELP IDENTIFYING ANOTHER MYSTERY S&W
Hello fellow S&W enthusiast!
With all of your help I was able to identify the last "mystery" Smith & Wesson semi-auto that I acquired (It was a limited run Lew Horton Performance Center). Thank you for the help.
This last Saturday I acquired another "mystery" S&W semi-auto (pictures attached below). It is a Performance Center (that is clearly marked, as are the magazines and the blue box that it came in). However, there is no model on it. The slide does have SD 40 S&W on it.
The serial number is SDC0023.
My research on this firearm has turned up empty. Except I think I read something somewhere that Smith & Wesson was making "Stocking Dealer" firearms out of the Performance Center exclusively for dealers that did high volume sales of S&W's. I think I even read that those Stocking Dealer firearms were the first to come out of the Performance Center (I'm not sure if that is true).
Obviously, this firearm is a 40 S&W.
Obviously, it is a Performance Center firearm.
The box it came in has no exterior labels (which is strange because the person I have purchased these firearms from had all of the other boxes in pristine condition). Could it have come without a label?
I have acquired other Performance Center semi-auto's in the past and never have seen Performance Center marked magazines. Is, or was, this common? The last number on the magazines is a nine (9). Are these 9 round magazines? Or ten (10) round with the ten not printed (no I have not loaded a magazine yet)?
The finish on this firearm is unique as well as portions of the stainless steel are polished (mirror like) and the rest appears to be brushed stainless steel (shot finish?).
Besides the obviously answer of contacting Smith & Wesson directly, and for fun within the forum, does anyone know what I have?
Thanks!

Thank you for the kind comment! It is very unique! If I acquire a firearm NIB I won't fire it (typically - lol). However, this one, even though it is flawless and looks new, looks like it has been shot a few times. I may be tempted to take it to the range and compare it to my other 3rd generation 40 S&W's (right away I notice that this SD40 has zero wiggle in the slide to frame connection - even my 4013TSW has a bit of a wiggle!). As a collector in California it is EXTREMELY hard to find just a normal S&W let alone something unique. I suppose that makes half the fun and why I am sharing my find.

Thank you Big Bruce! Where did you find this information? Is there a specific book from S&W that I should buy? I would like to learn more about this Stocking Dealer program.

Hi: Great Find ! As I mentioned in the Performance Center SD 40 discussion, my SD 40 came with the Novak Sight...Looks like you have the Adjustable Bomar one...Neat. I had asked Roy if the Novak one was correct for my gun since I thought most would have the Bomar sight but I don't have an idea of how many came with Bomar vs Novak.
As far as the label missing...the labels came off these early boxes very easily. I have several of these boxes with and without labels. The ones that have labels had to be re glued or taped over to keep them on the box.
Again, Great Find and enjoy your SD 40.
Kurt

I prefer to sleep with the cold steel of a handgun, it's warmer than a woman's hart.

Any of the double stack (9) round mags will work. The full frame (11) round double stacks will also work but it'll stick out the bottom.
If you're wanting ones marked with the Performance Center logo they'll likely be harder (& more expensive) to find.

You might want to post this in the WTB section of the forum.

Agree with all here. If you want to use the 11 round mag just grab the grip extender from Grip Plus it was what S&W sent on the PC 11 round mags for the shorties. Had one that was broken on my PC mag that came with my MK 3 Shorty .40 and just replaced the extender with a new Grip Plus. The old extender was marked grip plus on the back. Also dropped 2 more on mags one 15 round 9mm mag and one 11 round .40.
With the commi states restricting mags to 10 rounds or less double stack 9 and 10 round mags right now are bringing a premium. It will save you some $ to buy mags above 10 rounds and grab the extenders ( + can NEVER have to many rounds in your mag!!)
