Default For me the S&W1006 is the king of the 10mm

A personal evaluation of three 10 mm pistols. I'm sure others out there like other 10mm pistols for other various reasons these are my own ramblings about the few I have and what works for me, YRMV
-First off, loaded weight
for loaded weights, same ammo in all pistols, Winchester 175gr Silvertip
G20 --22.4 oz loaded
1911 Delta Elite -- 35.5 oz loaded
1006 --38.4 oz loaded
and for carry, all three fit well in my hunting rig a US Military BIANCHI M-12 with web belt, robust and inexpensive

-Capacity G20 provides nothing short of massive firepower 15+1 If ever caught in a wild boar stampede, this may be the one to have.
Its a toss up w/ the 1006 and 1911 at 9+1 each
While it seems the 1006 has a disadvantage in weight, it is its only shortcoming.
the G20 mangles brass and only shoots jacketed bullets unless you spend a bunch on an aftermarket barrel. I'm not even going to talk about its trigger
the Delta Elite is well, a 1911...I can shoot by instinct with this platform. I have been trained with and carried 1911s in one form or the other for over 40 years but the D Elite can not shoot full house 10mm loads with the unsupported factory barrel so once again a bunch must be spent on upgrading.
Now, on the 1006 right out the box can shoot anything that can safely be loaded and fired. Mine has had the guide-rod and spring updated to take an ISMI flat spring, (Many Thanks BMCM!) he also crowned the barrel and polished the feed ramp just cause he could.
I am currently using a 24 lb ISMI flat recoil spring that seems to handle everything.
I'm staying with the ISMI spring set up and not looking back, It's silky smooth feels like a hydraulic ram. I did this because I "wanted", to not because it was "needed". This pistol always ran super with no mods at all, the factory aluminum recoil guide rod was looking a little worn so I just wanted to freshen it up some.
Now where the 1006 truly shines is in accuracy and reliability at 15 to 20yds it tears one jagged hole. I can hit a hog sized target out to 75yds pretty dang regular. Not at all so with the Glock 20 and not near quite as reliably with the 1911 although it is a close second. The 1006 also shines in the safety area, at least for me, drop the mag and it wont shoot, the thumb lever is extremely positive, you cant accidentally bump it off and its SA/DA Ha! whats not to love? I really like all 3 pistols they all have their uses and purpose but the one that always goes in the woods with me is the S&W 1006. With it, I certainly will fear no evil.

Guess I'll play Devil's Advocate, just to keep the conversation going.

I have a 1006 that was bought new by my close friend (at my urging) in 1992 and I bought it from him in... '94 or maybe it was '95. But I've known the pistol since it was -NEW- and my load bench has crafted it's life's diet save for the the 4 or 5 boxes of factory ammo he started with.

Since 2008, my daily carry gun has been a Glock 29, Gen3, with an upgraded spring, Meprolight Night Sights, Pearce grip extensions and some skillful Dremel work to make it fit my hand better.

I have a deep, long, claasic LOVE for my 1006. The kind of pistol I think about when falling asleep when I want to go to my happy place. The Glock on the other hand, I can simply shoot much better and it also seems to handle recoil (on the SAME LOADS!) even better than the 1006. It must be due to the bore axis height which is noticeably lower on the Glock.

I can also outshoot a Glock 20 with my Glock 29, in my own hands of course. And for a few bucks (as you mentioned) I have a fantastic KKM .40 S&W conversion barrel for my G29 so I can run it like a house afire without worrying whatsoever about lost brass since .40cal brass is everywhere.

And while I absolutely love my 1006 and won't part with it...
There is nothing I can't do with this Glock 29 and if I wreck it, they will fix it or I can buy a boxful of them. On the other hand, Smith & Wesson willfully killed off their 10mm pistols barely three years after spawning them and only God knows (almost a quarter century later) if they might ever produce more of them in any guise. Right now, answer looks kind of like "hahahaha, no, what did you ask for?! 10mm?! 3rd Gen?! Hahahaha, here is a plastic 9mm for your purse, thanks for asking..."

Again, love my 1006 like crazy. But the Glock is good for plenty of reasons and if I have to close this post with one last elbow in the face of Team S&W, I can only say that it seems like if we could find the one guy that -HATED- his 1006 more than anyone... it almost appears as if that guy liked his 1006 just a bit more than Smith & Wesson did.

Yeah. I am still bitter that Smith & Wesson killed off the 10xx pistols in 1993 and I am still steamed at the reason I believe they did it.

I think they willfully killed off their 10mm handguns because they didn't want the 10mm to threaten or otherwise take the spotlight off their .40 S&W debut. And if you weren't on the scene as an active, interested gun buyer when the .40 S&W debuted, I'm not sure you really realize how much S&W seemed to have at stake.

I have no evidence to back up that theory, but I can't find any reason to make me think otherwise. In the end, the history is undisputed: the 10mm in a Smith & Wesson semi-auto pistol was ENDED, ceased, finished, cut-off and closed down. And it remains that way, still here in 2015, just as it did in 1993.

And it is awfully difficult to make any argument to counter this:
without Glock, the Glock 20 and the Glock 29, the 10mm Auto cartridge itself may NEVER have made it out of the 1990's as anything other than a footnote. Without Glock, the 10mm round might today be sitting right next to the .41AE.

I have two Colt Delta Elites and a Glock G20 SF. I carry Winchester Silvertip 175 grain in the Colts for urban carry and Underwood XTP 155 grains in my G20 SF for remote rural carry. I recently purchased a Glock G35 .40 S&W long-slide with the 5.3 inch barrel. The Underwood XTP 155 grain is approaching 10mm ballistics with the longer barrel.

I currently have a 1006, and have just inherited a 1076. Love them both. I bought a Colt Delta in the early '80's when they first appeared. Basically a Govt model chambered in 10mm. The only ammo available was Norma. The Colt was not exceptionally accurate, and bit the **** out of me every time I touched the trigger. It didn't stay long.

The straight back strap did not fit my hand well, so I swapped the stocks.

I did not care for the S&W 1076 I had.

I'd like to get a S&W 1006 or a Colt Delta, but have a G 29 with it's big brother's mags for hiking where the wild pigs roam. My Glock cost me $460.00 NIB out the door. But if I marry a rich widow.....................

Yep, 1076 has a frame mounted decock lever which doesn't appeal to me. Nonetheless, still a fine piece but a turn off to some.

If I'm not able to shoot 10mm in my 1006 than I'm likely not interested in shooting the caliber.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing the Glock 20 it lightweight relatively inexpensive and load on Monday, shoot all week, I like it much.
For me personally the only issue with the G20 is its minute of pie plate accuracy in my hands, for those who shoot glocks well, more power too you. I don't shoot it as well as the Delta or the 1006. The 1006 seems almost wire guided in the accuracy dept, I simply hit well with it. Yes, I realize with the G20 a custom trigger, custom sights custom barrel etc. etc. would help but then its close to a grand in total cost for a pistol I don't wanna have a grand in. It has a job it does well enough so I imagine its not going anywhere.
The Delta, well its just what Ive always carried and I'm sentimental about it, Its an old friend but I don't really shoot it that much anymore.
The 1006 is not what I carry for CCW but It is what goes wood walking with me, cutting wood in the hills or hunting. The parts are gettin scarce for it I do realize but as long as I feel its 100% it will continue to be with me when away from civilization.

Default 10mm love

I love the 1006 for what it is, but the SA/DA doesn't appeal to me as much as my Delta.

Sig is making a 10mm 220 in both single action and traditional da/sa models. Not a S+W but close.

The new sigs are really tanks. If you want a 10mm to hunt with these may be the ticket. Using 220>250 grain projectiles in these should not be a problem.
180 grain JHP and 200 power factor not a problem with these.

Default I like my 1006 so much.

That when I had the chance to buy another one LNIB with three mags about a year ago for four and a half bills. I could not walk away from it. My 1066 is not too shabby either.

For me it's the slide mounted safety & de-cock lever.

No mag safety and no slide mounted anything on the 1076 though. I'll never sell mine.

I would LOVE to add a 4526 to my meager collection but I really don't want to pay the high prices they're bringing for something that doesn't have factory support or spare parts readily available.

I can live with the slide mounted safety cause I don't have to use it

No parts and mags has me looking at the Sig 10mms. I regret not buying a 1006 20 years ago when I had the chance.

PLENTY of parts, just kind of hit or miss to get them from Smith & Wesson. Magazines are an issue at the moment... but it seems to me that with over FIFTY THOUSAND pistols produced (all of which use the same magazine), it sure seems prime for Mec-Gar to tool-up and make this magazine.

I have no idea what it takes for Mec-Gar to choose to add a whole new magazine to their production, but it is exactly and entirely what Mec-Gar does, and they are fantastic at it.

Sorry, no pics to back this up yet...I'm new to the 10mm world, but I just picked up my new portable deer slayer and black bear discouraging device: Glock G40 10mm longslide w/a full 6" barrel and with MOS (slide is set up to mount optical sights), and the new improved Leupold Deltapoint pro is on the way. This is the only firearm I intend to bring to the woods this deer season, can't wait!

My Delta is the safe queen and my Glock is the work horse. I added sights to my G20 along with a zev trigger and lone wolf barrel. I picked up the trigger and barrel from a guy that was getting out of 10s. Talk about a fire sale. And I shoot vintage Norma and it is a tack driver for me. Oh and it is a Lipsey special in flat dark earth.

For what it's worth, here are my feelings on 10mm. I have eleven 10mm pistols including 4 of the S&W's (1006, 1026, 1066, 1076). Of the S&W's I would have to say the 1026 is my favorite. This is largely because I prefer the SIG-style frame mounted decocker although the S&W version does feel a bit flimsy. I have one of the new SIGs but I can't seem to shoot it well consistently. The gun I shoot the best with is a Rock Island 5" 1911 Tac II. I have to say a gun I just got a couple of months ago is fast becoming my favorite to shoot. It is a Star Megastar. This is a heavy gun! It is 48 oz. UNloaded and that weight really helps with the recoil. It feels more like a good solid push. I have an EAA Witness Elite Match and consider it an excellent gun for the money. I also have and like the Glocks 20 and 29 but I have to say I shoot the 29 better with light loads.

I've had the same thought. This year at SHOT Show I'm going to talk to the folks at Mec-Gar and mention the 1000 series mag shortage. good Lord they build them for LUGERS. yes a lot of old Lugers out there but how many have you ever seen getting carried or shot?

I happen to treasure the 10xx series pistols myself. I got my 1006 March of 1990 and it has been a tank for the 10mm cartridge. Back when Bar-Sto was making the conversion barrels I managed to get a Match Grade 40S&W and then later I picked up a Bar-Sto "NOS" Match Grade 9x25 Dillon conversion barrel from Mike McNett of Double Tap ammo. Both were hand fitted for my pistol by me and the 9x25 needed a final reaming cutting of the chamber which was done by The Gun Works in Ohio.

This 1006 pistol is still my all time favorite along with the others in the 10xx series.

I will add to the positive testimonials for the S&W 10XX series chambered in the 10 mm. I took a Colt Delta Elite and 'full-housed' it using Briley, Clark and Wilson parts. It is a pretty darn nice accurate handgun, but the recoil spring system needed to tame the higher energy 10 mm loads became a little tiresome for me. I obtained a NIB S&W 1066 and did nothing more than slick up a few spots in the innards. What a great shooting, feeling and carrying handgun. My only regret is that the fellow that I bought the 1066 from also had a NIB 1076 for sale. I passed and shouldn't have. If I had used good sense and bought it too, I would probably be carrying the 1076 daily. .........

A well experienced friend and fellow retired LEO shot my 1066 on the range one day at a 1 gal. jug of water at about 7 yards. After the explosion of water, he said, "You know, this is a kick-a** cartridge." I had to agree with him and still do. .............

Not only do I agree with your theory about why S&W killed off the 10mm, I also suspect that they did the same type of thing to the 3rd gen pistol line because they were being a big thorn in the side to the Apple of S&W's eye, the M&P pistols.

Mec-Gar was most likely the one that made the magazines for S&W in the first place as an OEM supplier, I'd imagine it should not take much to produce them. After all, they had be banging them out until S&W decided to stop selling them.

I would like to find a Bar-Sto conversion barrel Match Grade 40S&W for my 1006, would make a sweet gun even more so. I reload so its not a big issue but I'm always looking for one. While Im wishing, a 1066 top end and Mec-gar mags

I would have to disagree that Mec-Gar was the maker of OEM Smith & Wesson magazines. While Mec-Gar absolutely does this for a HEAP of gun makers, I have simply seen no evidence that they were the supplier for Smith & Wesson for 3rd Gens... or previous generations of the metal pistols.

Can't shoot full power 10mm from a Delta Elite?
But, full power 10mm was all that was available for them when they cam out.
I had a shooting buddy who had one and he also had a G20.
All we shot from them was full power ammo.
I didn't particularly enjoy shooting either one.
