Default 4506 question

Found a 4506 marked HPD 242 on the right hand side.....do you think this is a department number or the inventory number? It is very well stamped. anyone have an idea as to which PD this might be from originally?

I could get the serial number and call S&W but thought the eagle eyed members of this forum might know.

Usually it's an asset #, but the HPD could be from any city where the name starts with "H". That could be thousands of possibilities. While S&W could tell you when the gun was shipped, I'm not sure they will tell you who they sold it to. GARY

Don't worry too much about HPD. However if condition is good or better and the price is right...BUY IT. The 4506 is a fantastic gun. I'm actually thinking I should buy another one, just to have.

I will mention that I was a Special Agent in Houston until 1989 and up until then Houston Officers bought their own guns. If you could qualify with it you could carry it.
