Just recently purchased a 5906 with the blade type rear sight. The sight is banged up and was thinking about replacing it with the novak rear sight fron brownells. Will this sight fit? Thanks

No, the rear of the slide will need to be machined for the Novak sight to fit - it will not just drop in.

The sight blade can be replaced just like a revolver sight. Pretty cheap and easy.

I'm wit epj. I've got Novak front and rear on my 5906. Just be certain to purchase something a sales rep will confirm is the proper base size.

You can put Novak backsight on there but it will take a little bit of work.

You're gonna need to have this area shaved down by about 0.070" or so as I recall:


Afterwards the Novak will fit just fine... This was an old 669 here:

Now, I need to get a couple of Novak sights for my early 5906 and 6906.

I guess I should use my clamp set to clamp it directly to the table of my mill, instead of clamping it in the mill vise.
I'd hate to squeeze the slide.

I doubt you'll close up the slide any. I've done plenty of slide milling and just clamp 'em in the vise. I use a little brown paper over the flats to prevent any marring unless I'm gonna blast afterwards. I use a little Wilton 2" precision vise for this small stuff and I crank it down pretty darn tight, never had a problem.

I imagine though applying Godzilla torque on a 8" Kurt vise might squish things a little Just tight enough to hold it rigid is plenty no need to go nutz. If there's a vise already trammed to the mill table with the jaws indicated parallel to the x (or y for that matter) I see no reason not to use it. Just clamp it up and make the cut.

Gawd, I love this kind of talk. I've always kicked myself for not getting some exposure to machinist work, instead of this ST/ET and computer stuff. I've got the mechanical aptitude, the math skills, and just the general feel for when to forge ahead and when to step back and take a second, third or fourth look at something before taking the irreversable leap. I keep the urges at bay with doing watch and clock work, but it's not the same
