Default Since the 10mm is starting to come back, based on some threads lately..I have an idea

How do we contact Mec-Gar or TripleK manufacturing and ask them to make the 10mm magazine? Why hasn't anyone made or repro'd these before? Everything is made in a 3rd Gen, yet no one makes the 10mm.

I do not know the exact 10mm production numbers, but if they are in excess of 30,000 pistols, I would assume it wouldn't take them long to sell enough magazines to break even on their initial cost of tooling up?

50,796 is the number quoted by Roy Jinks in the 10mm factory letters.

And if you are going to get a "wish come true", go with Mec-Gar, not the "also-rans." And yes, we've certainly had this idea in recent threads.

.

This too is the exact total you get when you add up all the 10xx quantities in The Complete 3rd Gen Model List

Guess Steve's math checks. Score: A+

Mec-Gar is in all likelihood S&W's OEM supplier of magazines and probably has a non-compete or other silly clause in the contract that prevents them from selling the magazines.

I know... it sounds silly, otherwise it makes no sense to me why Mec-Gar hasn't yet filled the void that's been created by S&W no longer selling magazines for all 3rd gen pistols, except for the single stack 9mm 3909 &909 pistols.

IMHO, it's never going to happen with Mec-Gar... and I don't care how many 10mm 3rd Gens are out there. Mec-Gar currently only offers magazines for the 5900 series. If for some reason they ever wanted to expand their 3rd Gen offerings, there are other far more popular choices for them to make.

TripleK is another matter. They confuse the heck out of me. But I could see them doing a limited run with the right motivation. It's not like this is rocket science after all... and they do seem more willing & able to take risks with magazines for less popular guns.

Default It's obviously not going to be a big seller...

How much would the market bear in price? Would people pay $50 for one? And besides quantities of guns that were manufactured do they have any idea how many would snap up what was offered?

Exactly right. It's not how many 10mm 3rd Gens were manufactured. It's how many are out there right now with an insufficient number of magazines... or at least with an owner desiring more magazines even if they are TripleK brand and selling for more money than good used ones and NOS at shows.

I still think the $100+ each we are seeing on-line is crazy. Yes, a few wealthy folks in isolated areas without gun shows may be buying them... but I managed to buy three never used ones for $97.50 total out the door. And I could have picked up 4 or 5 used ones at last Saturday's show for probably $35-$40 each.

I already sent them a note with some statistics. I haven't heard back from them though.

I am meeting with Triple K at SHOT in January.

We have been working on magazines for another pistol that currently get bid to over $200 on the sites. The release keeps getting delayed because they get too busy with orders for much more popular firearms and this project gets temporarily put on the shelf.

Maybe they can over produce a bit on the popular ones to give themselves a break to add a few runs of not so popular ones. I would suppose that after set up and a production run it wouldn't be a lot of trouble to extend the runs a tad to gain a slight surplus. While they are doing that they can get the dies ready for a run of the more special mags.

Instead of going to Mec-Gar, perhaps one of the lesser known mag makers would work better...
Promag did a fantastic job on the Marlin 795 mags...but failed to really advertise them...
or make them available for very long...They sent a large order to Academy Sports,
then didn't restock them after they were sold...which was kinda foolish on either Academy's or Promag's part...
still don't know which one dropped the ball...

Champion/Shooter's Ridge is kinda hit & miss with their plastic mags,
as they utilize an older technology...
so a lot of theirs tended to need to be re-glued with Plastic Weld...
especially after being in a hot car for a few hours, their glue separates...

So, what we need is someone who can Stamp metal mags, or Glock-style plastic & metal mags...
Who has some ideas about some 1911 mag makers who could expand slightly to handle S&W 3rd Gens??

Pro-Mag has already made 3rd Gen S&W mags and the only folks who don't classify them as "SUCK" are the people who sell them.

Honestly, maybe the best answer is the most obvious one:

look at the mark-up from cost to sale and give me any valid reason why Smith & Wesson shouldn't simply start offering them again?

It should be as obvious and simple as you suggest. But somehow, within the halls & offices of S&W, I'll bet it isn't. I'm guessing that any decision to restart manufacturing of magazines for pistols that are more than 20 years old would have to be a customer support-based decision and not one based on maximizing company resources & profit.

BTW, I happened to spot and picked up another 10mm magazine yesterday. This one was very slightly used, but for $35 out the door I couldn't resist. One quick trip through the wife's ultrasonic cleaner and it will be good as brand new.

This company can probably do it. They already make 59 and 69 magazines and seem to have a great guarantee. The magazines they make for the HK P9S are well regarded from what I have read.
