4506 Absurdity
My 4506 will feed empty shells. I know most will
Unbelievable.
Remarkable quality of these older firearms.
My glock won't do that (gasp!)

The 645 and 4506 are guns that S&W got pretty much right from the start. The 645 was developed after factory shooter Tom Campbell, now of Safariland, had gained experience with his custom built match gun. The 645 was that rare combination of a gun that was much anticipated and worked great from the get-go. No real need for beta testers to figure out any problems with that one. And, you are correct, early articles touted the ability of the gun to feed empty cases or wadcutters, which S&W learned from the Model 52, which was designed to feed wadcutters.

Thanks for the info, did not know that.
I know it's more cost friendly to make plastic guns, but I bet if S&W made a run of all steel semi autos again, people would by the **** out of them

This comes up about once a month-
If S&W had any thought that they would sell that well (at the price they would sell them at), they would produce them. Be happy that the originals are still (relatively) easy to find.

I love the 4506. It was my issued uniform carry pistol. I had it 5 months before retiring, it had been to the range once. As is customary I was given it upon retirement. It has a cozy warm place in the safe along with other Gen 3 pistols.

All my 3rd gen 45's, including my 2004 4516-3, will perform the feed empty cases trick. So will my 645.
Fine pistols. Regards 18DAI

What he said! There is already a thread about it going back many pages and probably many years

I already have one and wouldn't buy another. I also see a lot if the on the used shelves in gun stores. Obviously people are not holding on to them. Most consider them to heavy for concealed carry and any gun can work as a night stand or range gun

My first duty pistol, a 4566 TSW would feed empty cases. I suspect my 4006 and 4013 will as well, but I've never tried. Any 3rd Gen I've ever seen has been superbly reliable.
On a side note, I have a Colt Commander and Springfield Mil-Spec 1911 that will feed empty cases as well from good mags like Tripp Research and Wilson Combat.

I understand people don't want the heavy 3rd gens as carry guns or nightstand guns. But why not have at least 1 SOLID firearm? Out of all the guns I own, I only carry 1. The shield. In my opinion, it's a good idea to have a firearm that is superbly built, heavy, and rock solid. All these plastic guns out make me feel like I'm holding a airsoft pistol. When you pick up a 100% steel gun, you think "Wow, this is what a real gun feels like"
Oh yea and the 4506 is totally a movie gun.
What's not to like about it

Someday, I will buy a 1911 for a number of reasons, but I believe the 4506 to be a better weapon.

I like a 10mm, so heavy it is. 1006 and a 1076. Both carry like a 1911(which I also do).
But to the O.P. "will feed empty shells"
Now that's a useful test.

I don't really consider it that amazing. Every year at qualification, we run a drill where the instructor randomly loads magazines for you with live rounds and empty casings. Drill tests your reaction to failure to fires.
Our duty gun is a full size M & P 45.
I hate the gun, but it does digest everything you feed it.

I have a 4566. Great gun! BUUUT. ..... I don't go by how a gun feels but how it performs. The gun I carry is not a S&W and is polymer but they have shown to perform time and again since the the 80s. It's every bit as solid as my 4566. This is how guns should be bought, by history or performance not by looks or feel of material....those are emotions not hard facts. There are poor soft metals, brittle metal, but to you it looks solid cause its metal. Same goes for polymer. This is why I don't use emotions to buy a gun

Empty shell casings? What for? Whenever I get a new 9mm (I like to wheel & deal on the local used market, and I'm a 9mm fan), I like to test them with a wide range of ammos, from common target ammo like WWB and Federal aluminum, to Rusky steel cased, to a few hollow points, wadcutters, or whatever else is available between me and my buds.
There's some obvious real-world,practical value here.
But why the hell would I try to cram some empty casings through them? What is that supposed to prove? If Glocks, which are famous for feeding nearly anything by the thousands, don't like them (as mentioned above), it doesn't seem to me like another pistol feeding, or not feeding, empty shell casings proves much of anything.
I mean, sure, I can see how it's kinda cool if they DO feed them, but even if they don't, who the hell cares?
What's next, cutting up 1" pieces of number 2 pencils and seeing if it'll feed those?
