Default Shorty 40 MK3 New Owner Questions on Recoil Springs and Holsters

Hey everyone I have purchased a Shorty 40 MK3 that I will be picking up next week. Has it's original box and 5 performance center marked mags.

The only other 3rd gen S&W I've ever owned is a 4040PD and it had a big appetite for recoil springs!

I'd like to replace the recoil spring setup in my Shorty for reliability sake because when speaking with the original owner he claims to have never replaced anything on the gun. I'd like to occasionally carry it on my property so I want everything in check.

I spoke with S&W today and gave them the serial number of the gun. They claim that it uses a single recoil spring (which they no longer carry) part 895240000. I did find these at Midway USA however when I field stripped mine before working out a deal on it I noticed that it has the "nested" design spring setup not a single spring. S&W couldn't help me any further. After some research I have found both springs for the dual spring setup in the 4013TSW which I'm thinking may also work for the Shorty but not sure.... I'm hoping someone here can guide me in the right direction. What I have found is 108660000 (outer) and 108670000 (inner) would these be be correct ones to replace the factory springs? My serial starts with KPC.

Also one other question, I am looking to order a good quality concealed carry holster for it and a lot of the makers do not have a Shorty specific mold.... Would I be correct in assuming that a 4013TSW (non-rail) holster would be exactly the same as long as it isn't extremely detailed Kydex or something that has a slightly different slide? I'm looking at just an OWB Open top design like a Milt Sparks 55BN or similar.

Thanks in advance.

I'd call S&W back again and hope you get someone that wasn't working at McDonalds a week ago. The best I know is S&W only had one dual spring setup and the numbers are what you posted and are the same as your 4040.

While it may be a Herculean task, I've been put off from buying holster many times because makers don't list all appropriate gun models in their catalogs. You assumption seems reasonable though.

Default Dual nested or flatwire springs

Congrats on a great find!

Post some pics & a report when you can.

I've never had one of those but the chart says they were made (only) in 1995 & I'm pretty sure all the 3rd Gen's that ultimately ended up with dual nested recoil springs had done so by then. So unless your gun was converted, from single to dual springs, that sounds right that it has the dual.

The one box end label that I saw, also a KPC01xx made in Apr-1995, said Model No. was 4006. Does yours say that too?

Those two PNs, 108670000 & 108660000 are correct. S&W had some not long ago so you might get them there.

Sprinco started making replacement springs for them a while back.
They're near the bottom of this page: Tactical Springs & Machine Gunners Lube

.
If you're interest in using a single flatwire spring, instead of the dual nested, take a look at these threads:

4516-2 Spare Springs Source?

BMCM tested and approved 4516-2 springs

Concerns with my "new" 4516-1 (advice needed)

Thank you both HCH and Bluedot. Great information. I'll try to get up some pics when I pick it up. I very likely might go with the flatwire recoil spring setup, I'm glad that we have that option available. These guns really see like a lot of value for the dollar when purchased used. Makes me miss the old days of the Performance Center.

The same dual springs are used in the TSW series 40s' and 45s along with the .356tsw compact. Most 6900 series holsters will work with the Shorty-Forty.

Sprinco.com has the dual nested recoil springs you need. I put some in my 4513TSW and in my 4053TSW. They work great and are supposed to last longer than the S&W factory springs. Congrats on your new Shorty 40!

Thank you everyone for your help and input. Finally picked up the Shorty and brought it home for a good cleaning. Replaced the factory dual recoil springs with new ones (10867 and 10866) I picked up from Brownells and snapped a picture. I also called around to some holster makers today and Mitch Rosen was able to take my order for a build for future reference.
