Folks,

Just got a status update from Bill (aka BMCM) regarding his work...

He made one modification to the chamber plugs, to better match what is seen in the image in Post #12. He is also working on creating a 1:1 model of the faux Mark 3 suppressor, to be sent to the ATF for a ruling. Additionally, he is working with Rennie Raines on the muzzle cap, barrel cap, and back end cap plug. Rennie has vast experience making molds, so Bill is making the "positives" for Rennie to make the "negatives" of these important parts to the accessory kit...

To say I am pleased right now is again an understatement. During the past three years, the efforts of a small handful of dedicated artisans has produced some stunningly recreated examples of items thought never to be made again. Yet here we are, on the cusp of placing a very faithful, shooting reproduction of an iconic Vietnam-era handgun into the reverent hands of everyday folks who wish to shoot their own copy...

Gotta love it...

Keep the faith...

Kevin,

IRT the muzzle cap can you get me some measurements on the molded in o-ring? Did the 1-1/4 diameter you measured include the width over that "o-ring"? If so, I need the diameter of the basic disc too. I'm going to try making a rigid facsimile of the cap to be used as a mold making positive. To do so I'll need pretty precise measurements of the actual article which will also play into machining the mating recess in the scale model can. You wouldn't be inclined to lend me the thing for a couple days would you?

Cheers
Bill

Front end cap in the chuck.

And fitted to the body.

Plenty more stuff yet to do.

Folks,

Had an email exchange with the gent who is making the rear sight wings. He feels the top edge of the wings is not "round enough" to match the originals, so he is going to rework the top edges a bit, basically to increase some radiuses for a more "rounded" appearance...

Please review the attached images for your comments...

And we do want some comments. We are thisclose to achieving something not seen in 50 years. We want it right. Please give us your voice...

I think the front edge is too tall, and the rear radius is too sharp. I also think the front angle is too steep.

I zoomed the image on the right to approximate a 1:1 scale and used an adjustable protractor and radius gages right on my flatscreen. using the slide's major axis as baseline I see the front edge being at 74° and the rear edge at 80°. Where the rearward edge transitions to the top edge looks like an 85° angle with a 1/4" included radius.

Cheers
Bill

Bill,

We are narrowing things down to the front transition point. If that area is reduced in height and the edge leading to it become more curved, the look will be more similar to the originals...

Folks,

I would like to again present some of BMCM's work, this time on the faux Mark 3 suppressor. The model of the suppressor being created will be sent to the ATF for evaluation, since it will also include a muzzle cap to be fitted in the recess. This will then duplicate the actual Mark 3 suppressor precisely...

Enjoy

Folks,

it has been decided that the front edge of the rear sight wings will be lowered and radiused to more closely match the original rear sight wings. Should have the revised PDF drawing done by Monday...

Folks,

Attached is the revised rear sight wing drawing. I took the front edge transition point and lowered it a full 0.1000", and redrew the radius at the front and back edges of that line. It should look much more like the originals now...

Folks,

I am pleased to show a few pics of the left side slide lock and a 39-2 slide with a fixed "ring" bushing silver soldered into place. While the work seems rough on the bushing, it will be filled in and smoothed for a perfect finish. With both slide locks, the darker material made for a smoother, harder item. The white item was not as fully formed, nor as perfect as the darker one, so the other parts will be requested to be made from the darker material...

Enjoy and keep the faith...

Folks,

I am pleased tonight to show two images of the slide lock laid basically into position on my 39-2, to check for sizing on the pistol. I am hoping during the upcoming week to have the chance to see the pivot pin and the right side of the slide lock for a test fitting...

Tomorrow (28 Feb) is my bday. This present was a good one...

Folks,

I received an email from Master Chief Bill (aka BMCM) with two images of work he is doing. One shows how the back end of the faux Mark 3 suppressor is being threaded for 1/2" - 28. The other is of two urethane cylinders he is going to use to make the muzzle plugs from. He has stated those cylinders fit like a glove into the front end recess on the faux suppressor...

Folks,

A late addition from Master Chief Bill (BMCM). The image shows how well the urethane cylinder will fit into the faux Mark 3 suppressor's recessed front end. We are looking at ways to precisely and evenly cut that cylinder into equal sized disks....

Things are looking pretty dang good just now...

Folks,

With another email from Master Chief Bill (BMCM), I would like to present the now complete prototype faux Mark 3 suppressor and muzzle plug, both of which we will submit to the ATF for testing as a faux suppressor with a "cap" to prevent water from entering the faux suppressor..

To quote the fictional Colonel John "Hannibal" Smith, " I love it when a plan comes together." And I truly do...

I am praying everything will be ready for production before Memorial Day. I trust others are hoping for that as well...

Folks,

I spoke with swchad regarding the posting of pricing for the parts for replicating the Hush Puppy...

The first item available are the chamber plugs for the accessory kit. Master Chief Bill (aka BMCM) is the supplier of these items. He has stated a price of $55.00 (which includes shipping via USPS) for a complete set of four (4) chamber plugs with red O-rings. In the original Mark 26 Accessory kit, there were four chamber plugs, so this is an exact match. Additionally, unless one is trying to eject a chamber plug underwater, I doubt one will be lost, so this is a lifetime purchase...

I do realize some will feel that price is a bit high. Given the entirely custom nature of these recreated plugs, made from sturdy black Delrin, the price is quite reasonable. Bill said it takes about 90 minutes to turn these four items on a lathe, so adding in material cost, this is a bargain...

If you are interested in creating your own Hush Puppy replica, contact Bill via a PM here using his ID, which is BMCM...

I hope some of you will be having your own Hush Puppy made for yourself soon...

Folks,

Attached is an "overlay" image of the old and the new profiles for the rear sight wings. I lowered the front transition point by almost 0.125" overall. I had to agree with Justin Meyerholtz; it DOES looks much better now and more like the originals...

Folks,

The gunsmith sent me an image in happy surprise email today. He got done threading and fitting the 5" barrel I had for my Hush Puppy slide! I was able to find a real 5" barrel for a 39/59 pistol on an online gun auction web site for a reasonable price and bought it instantly. For those unable to find another barrel such as that, I do have a PDF drawing for making a threaded barrel extension to length a 39/59 series barrel to the required 5" length. I attached said PDF drawing to this post...

Regarding the picture, I specified a thread pitch of 1/2" - 28, to match the standard pitch for the majority of real suppressors out there made for 9mm firearms. That is the same pitch as AR-15 barrels, hence he put one on the barrel to show the barrel was, in fact, threaded. With the pistol frame, that is NOT a real ASP conversion. Another customer evidently got taken by some clown who passed off a modified 39-2 as a true ASP, so that frame is just there to show things for perspective...

I am a happy camper tonight...

Folks,

I am pleased to announce I received the model faux mark 3 suppressor from Bill (BMCM). I also received the "positives" for the barrel cap and the back end cap plug, of which these will forwarded to Rennie Raines to make the "negative" molds for actual pieces to be made from rubber...

I will send the model faux suppressor to the ATF for their review on Tuesday, same for the other two parts...

When I took the suppressor to the gunsmith to show it to him, he then showed me the right slide lock half and the pivot pin. Everything was the proper size, but the 3-D Printing process was unable to precisely capture all the fine details of the pivot pin, which showed a great deal of plastic flash and lack of detail, but that was actually pretty minor, since a minute or two on a lathe would clean that right up...

We are now starting to go after how to best produce the slide lock in a cost effective manner, so please bear with us...

Folks,

I am pleased to state I made a few modifications to my 39-2 to fully convert it into a Hush Puppy. I field striped the pistol, then partially disassembled it. After removing the backstrap, I replaced the factory hammer with one that had a hole in the rowel end, exactly like the original Hush Puppies did. Next, I installed a modified sear release lever...

Seen again in the second image, the white portion of said part was removed, thus when the safety is applied, it only protects the firing pin, but does not push against the sear to also drop the hammer, so a first shot can be done from single action mode. And to confirm it does, in fact, work, I removed the original "lollipop" rear sight, then temporarily uninstalled the ejector depressor plunger and spring. Doing this disables the magazine disconnect, so the pistol can be fired if a magazine is fully seated or not. I replaced the parts after the test, but on the slide I am having modified, I will remove those parts permanently...

Folks,

The model faux suppressor heads to the ATF tomorrow morning for their review. The "positives" of the barrel cap and back end cap plug go out to Rennie Raines for his work too...

Folks,

I just received this new image of the revised rear sight wings. I do agree it does look more like the original wings...

Added later: I put up an image of the old wings so folks can see the differences...

Folks,

Just received my newly revised rear sight wings from Justin Meyerholtz. That more aggressive slope DOES give it a more authentic look. The Hush Puppy project is drawing to a close that will be spectacular. Am pleased once again. Thanks, Justin...

Folks,

Well, I got some GREAT news today regarding the "Hush Puppy" pistol project. Just spoke with my gunsmith. After he reviewed the plans and checked the numbers, he stated he could make the slide lock parts from pre-hardened 4140 material for a price of only $ 300.00!!! Given this part is custom made by hand, that is actually pretty reasonable in cost. My gunsmith also stated he can build the extended type elevation screw for the rear sight for only $ 50.00, again a reasonable cost given the custom-made nature of these parts...

A friend of mine. who is a Philadelphia cop. is much further along the path to completion than I, so his pistol will probably be done first. I hope with all my posts, that a few of you will also have a replica "Hush Puppy" made for yourselves, whether the 39-2 or the 59 style...

The ONLY parts left to go now are the barrel cap and the back end cap plug. I am waiting to hear back from the ATF regarding a ruling on the recess at the front end of the faux Mark 3 Mod 0 suppressor. We are in the home stretch...

I put up a few pics of the slide lock and the PDF of the rear sight wings, with the needed elevation screw for you perusal...

Folks,

My gunsmith is going into production for "Hush Puppy" slide locks on Tuesday. The cost will be $ 300.00 for this custom-made item, made from pre-hardened 4140 steel. His name is Tim and he works for https://www.facebook.com/MaxonShootersSupply. He stated to me today it is better to have a small batch production run rather than do things as a "onesie." IF you are interested in making your own Hush Puppy replica, call Maxon on Tuesday and ask for Tim...

I will post the pricing for the other items shortly. I will state the other parts are more reasonable, but everything is first-rate...

Folks,

FINALLY have some movement on some fronts...

With the faux suppressor though, the ATF is moving at glacial speed. Been six weeks since I mailed the faux Mark 3 suppressor to them for a ruling. Nothing heard back yet...

As for the progress with the parts, please review the attached images. The first slide locks ARE well underway!!! My gunsmith has reported to me today that the first two slide locks should be ready on next week. I am VERY happy with that news...

The second image is of a friend's slide that is almost complete. He sent the slide to my gunsmith for the slide lock work. That slide is a thing of beauty to behold. My friend is also going to have my gunsmith install the latest revision rear sight wings...

The back end cap plug and the barrel cap are being worked on now, to create the molds to pour molten rubber into...

I am content for now...

Folks,

I am HIGHLY pleased to present this update...

As seen in the accompanying images, my gunsmith has TWO, count 'em, TWO slide locks 100% and ready to go!!!

The main pistol images are of my replica in process. The slide lock by itself goes to what will be the first Hush Puppy completed....

I am now having a great weekend...

Folks,

Went to check in with my gunsmith today and he had a surprise for me. He finished creating the elevation screw for the elevated rear sight wings. (Sorry for the ****** cell phone pic; my cell camera just sucks with close-ups and details...) He also stated I need to make up one more part from the Hush Puppy, since the stud that works with the slide slop need to be able to hold the new slide lock in two separate positions. I should have it designed by next weekend...

Folks,

Here is an update with status:

Still no movement on the ATF front with the faux Mark 3 Mod 0 suppressor. Most likely, since this is a faux suppressor, they put it on the back burner, but for how long, who knows. As such, I would like to ask an informal poll of interested folks to see what y'all feel about whether I should proceed with the faux Mark 3 or not...

Spoke with my gunsmith again. He was able to make some measurements of the stud the slide stop rubs against, then I took his drawing and recreated the rectangular looking stud S&W made for the Hush Puppy. This stud was needed to ensure the slide lock had two positive positions to operate properly. A tiny hunk of metal, but it is vital...

I will post that PDF drawing shortly...

Additionally, when I visited my gunsmith yesterday, I did NOT know it was S&W days there. My gunsmith and I took the time to let the S&W rep view and fondle, er, um, handle my Hush Puppy replica. To say he was impressed was an understatement. He took some images of everything, and said he was going to forward them to the S&W Performance Center. I reminded him next year would be 50 years since the Hush Puppy was made for the US Navy SEALs. It would be a fitting tribute to have replica Hush Puppies built for that anniversary...

Folks,

Just a quick, yet IMPORTANT update today...

Went to see my gunsmith about another project, but he showed me my slide was now cut with the rear sight dovetail, ready to accept the rear sight wing. He has drilled and tapped a point within that dovetail for a small screw to secure the wing firmly in position. He did indicate where the heating of the slide to fill in the areas where the "lollipop" sight once was. When I questioned him about having the front sight (which was built by another gunsmith three years ago) installed, my gunsmith remembered about all the previously done silver soldering for the "ring" bushing. He then stated I should have the other gunsmith only mill off the front sight ramp, and drill the holes that gunsmith uses to attach the front sight, but to NOT install it. My gunsmith is going to send my slide out to anneal it for hardness again, but the annealing process will play havoc with the silver solder work, hence that will most likely have to be redone...

This "issue" was caused by doing this work without realizing the proper order of production. While not insurmountable, it is just a PITA at this point, correctable for a few bucks. Cést la vie, and live and learn for next time...

Things are getting very close now, folks. I am happy once again...

Folks,

I received my slide back from the gunsmith who had created the front sight for it over three years ago. Based on my previous entry, all I had him do was remove the "ring" bushing in the slide currently, mill off the original front sight ramp, then drill the two holes he uses to properly position the front sight. When I brought the parts back to my gunsmith, he was quite happy to see how the parts were done. He was also glad because he was about to send another few parts out for heat treating, so it was good to only have to send out one batch for processing...

Once my slide comes back from heat treating, my pistol will be complete. I only lack the faux Mark 3 suppressor now...

I have attached a few images of the front sight and its installation process with this post...

Folks,

Just a quick update...

Still no word from the ATF yet regarding the faux suppressor, so I will just proceed with the suppressor with the recess in front...

The image below is of my slide on its return from being rehardened. Not pretty, but still a sight for sore eyes. Yes, glaciers move faster than this project at times. but good things come to those who wait, but hopefully not much longer...

Folks,

Attached is an image for the real deal, an actual S&W Mark 22 Mod 0 "Hush Puppy" pistol, with the Mark 3 Mod 0 suppressor, hence forming the Mark 23 Mod 0 Swimmer Weapons System. Since I am trying to get as close as possible, with my standard 39-2 slide, I will have my gunsmith polish away the wording on the back central area of the slide, just behind the Smith & Wesson and just in front of the slide serrations...

Getting ever closer...

Folks,

Spoke with my gunsmith today. He had the front sight and the "ring" bushing installed on my slide. I directed him to remove the wording on the slide's left side after the words Smith & Wesson and before the serrations. Looking VERY cool to me. I asked him if this was the wildest customization he has done to a firearm and he said, "No." Kind of shocked me...

Folks,

Checked in with my gunsmith again. While he had nothing to report basically with my pistol, he showed me what will be the first completed reproduction Hush Puppy's slide. Cerakoted coated in a stunning basic black, it is certain to please its owner in the Philadelphia area. Hopefully, he will take pics of the pistol fully assembled and send copies to me for posting here...

Still working with getting the molds made for the back end cap plug and the barrel cap. Things do look good otherwise...

Folks

Almost four years ago, I posted in a firearms forum it was possible to replicate an iconic pistol from the Vietnam war era. This pistol was used by the SEALS on their missions, to neutralize human, canine and waterfowl sentries outside of enemy villages. Officially, the US Navy called this Smith & Wesson pistol the Mark 22 Mod 0, but due to its purpose, the SEALs called it the "Hush Puppy." A remarkable feat of engineering that served with the SEALs until the mid-1980s...

Others told me I was nuts (though who hasn't said that to me multiple times?), but I did not heed their catcalls...

With only images of the original pistol and an electronic digital caliper, I reverse engineered the front sight, the rear sight "wings," the suppresor (in this case a faux unit), and most importantly, the slide lock, all to be combined on a "donor" S&W 39-2...

My friends, the "Hush Puppy" is OFFICIALLY reborn!!!

The pistol seen in these images belongs to the first person who believed in my vision of what could be. I was NOT alone on this journey. Others more skilled in metalworking turned my visions into a reality that truly honors the warriors who carried this iconic firearm into harm's way...

Wish I had a Cohiba and a decent size snifter of cognac. In the immortal words of Colonel John "Hannibal" Smith, "I love it when a plan comes together." Just let me wallow in the "glory" a bit. I get so little recognition of the efforts I put into things, even this one small achievement means a ton...

Thank you all for bearing with me. All forum members can be proud tonight...
