Folks,

Attached are two images of my new drop-style hip holster for my Mark 22 Mod 0. While it may not be exact to what was issued, I actually think of this holster as an improvement, since it will attach to a pistol belt, yet hang lower. I am still working on the back end chamber plug, muzzle cap, and barrel cap. My gunsmith made a mold for the muzzle caps, but I need to figure out what material to use. BMCM once indicated there is a two-part urethane compound that should work, but as of now, I have no clue as to what that item is.

BMCM,

I can report the ATF examined the prototype suppressor...and confiscated it. Those dweebs took it apart, then decided since the ends could be mounted on the external white tube, they considered it a FULL-BLOWN SUPPRESSOR and would not return anything. Cést la vié when working "with" our government.

Enjoy.

Congrats on finishing a neat project.

These sure are sturdy pistols I have a 5906 myself. S&W Model 5906 9MM - YouTube

As a fellow IL resident I feel your pain on not being able to get a suppressor. I'm not 100% up on the laws but you can get a SBR stamp with a C&R lic in IL so your stock idea might be doable. Check with the legal guys over on IllinoisCarry.com as they seem to know the IL laws frontways and backways.

One option that you might consider is some custom light loaded 9mm. If you are using the slide lock and hand cycling anyways all you need is enough powder to push the bullet out of the barrel. Might be a fun project and will get you closer to the noise levels you are looking for.

If you are interested I have all the gear to load 9mm and have been experimenting a bit myself.
Can you shoot .38 SWC bullets in 9mms? - YouTube

Another option is primer only glue stick loads
DIY Glue Stick .38 spl .357 mag rubber training bullets - YouTube

I also have outdoor space to film in better light and no issues with shooting reloads like Maxon. Shoot me a message

To sweeten the deal I know an IL NFA dealer who said he would be interested in meeting up at my range with a demo suppressor to film with if you were interested in trying it fully suppressed. Obviously it wouldn't be the correct suppressor and it would depend on him having a can that fits your thread pitch.

Cool. Bought a 39 in 72, sold it in 76. While I had it I picked up one of these, been in a parts drawer for all these years.

M10,

Where in IL? Des Plaines here.

I use Fiocchi Dynamics 158gr FMJ sub-sonics. Thread pitch for my barrel is 1/2-28, same as an AR barrel.

One thing my gunsmith and I did was to have the slide rehardened after all the silver soldering was done. The slide lock was done with pre-hardened 4140. We think we resolved the issue of the front sight flying off, since my gunsmith used a small set screw from the inside of the slide into the front sight.

Far as the stock is concerned, few were made and fewer used, so no need for one since most SEALs merely stuck the pistol on a lanyard around their neck and just let it hang in front. I do want to make muzzle caps, back end chamber plugs and barrel caps, the last accessories I need, as I already have four (4) chamber plugs for the barrel.

Maybe we can see what can be done later this summer.

Folks,

While stumbling around the archives on ARF.com a few days ago, guess what I found?

This is the original post I made back in November, 2012 to start my journey bringing the Hush Puppy back to life. Have a look...

Posted: 11/5/2012 2:39:54 AM EDT

"Folks,

The retro sidearm thread got me thinking a bit. Yes, I know...VERY dangerous thing to do with RBRD floating around in one's veins and cranium...

Last night, I done put the first thought into motion: I bought a complete slide for a particular pistol off eBay. The slide is for a Smith and Wesson Model 39-2. The retro sidearm I am going to attempt to replicate is... an S&W Mk 22 Mod 0 "Hush Puppy," possibly complete with faux can. I may also make a GI holster for it...

The slide I bought has the original adjustable rear sight on it, with the "wings" for protection. Based on some images I found online, recreating the raised front sight should be simple, along with making a raiser for the original S&W rear sight. As such, the parts I am having conundrums about are as follows:

- Extended height rear sight "wing"
- Two-sided slide stop with extended release lever

As for the barrel, I thought I had seen a 5" barrel for a S&W 39 series available in the past, but if that is no longer an option, what firm can make a new threaded, blued barrel at a reasonable price? I am also working on ideas for the faux can, especially getting it sized right, so the new extended height front sight will work with it. I wish to at least make this pistol functional for accurate firing without the can on...

Okay, fellow Retroheads: what say you?"

It was indeed a journey, one filled with patience. Luckily, things worked out pretty much properly from the start, thus making it easier to handle.

Okay, so the faux suppressor turned out to be to real for the ATF. Bummer. What if you built a linear compensator in the approximate dimensions to give the general appearance of the original attachment? A comp of this type directs the sound down range and softens the report as heard by the shooter. Many companies are building these type of rife attachments with less hassle than a faux unit.

John,

Well, no need for all that now. The faux suppressor looks fine and does its assigned task quite well for now. I just hope the Hearing Protection Act will become law one day down the road.

Dave,
What a great accomplishment. As a collector of model 39's I always hoped to someday see a hushpuppy in action. Seeing your replica at the range is the closest I will come to that. Is this a project that you might someday expand to include having additional models for sale?

kwill,

I was supposed to have an NFA dealer with a 9mm suppressor met me to try it out with my Hush Puppy replica; the guy did not show. Cést la vie, but a video will be forthcoming.

I've scanned this thread quickly and am left with the question... is there any concern about the effect of firing the pistol locked will be on the frame? I realize this started out as a replica to have little with any live fire, but it is actually fired right? I seem to have read somewhere that this became a problem with the originals.

While I'm asking, is there a current source for the long barrels to be used on this project, or are they one-off only at this point?

I'm a revolver guy most of the time but just inherited the Model 39-2 I found for my Dad back in the '70s, so I'm investigating the variations of the Model.

Cracking only happened on the slides, where the locking area was milled into the slide. I believe we solved cracking issues by having the slide rehardened to factory specs after being milled on.

A competent gunsmith can make a barrel extension easily enough.

Congrats to you, but condolences on the passing of your dad.
