Default 5904

I found a beautiful 5904 at the LGS this evening for $399. I'm thinking about running back and grabbing it. I know hard parts are drying up, but this gun looks like brand new and would probably outlast me. Anything I should know before I do the deed?

Personally, I'd try to get them to drop the price some. Then again, as a FFL, I always try to get shops to drop the price because I need to make a profit on it too. $400 already seems like a good price and I'd love to see how it looks.

As for what you need to know, they're built like tanks and mags for it are expensive. That's about all I can think of.

Mags aren't really a big problem for 5904/5906. Midway usually has new SW mags for $35 and Mecgar mags are reliable and readily available in 15 or 17 rd capacity. Currently Midway SW mags out of stock but accepting backorders. Wish that was the case for other 3rd gen mags. For $400 grab it unless its beat up that is a decent price.

Greg Cote still has Mec-Gar magazines. 10 rnd and 15 rnd blue for >$23.00, or nickel 10 rnd and 15 rnd for >$24.00. 17 rnd in like are $1.00 more. Mec-Gar mags are perfectly excellent.

Those aren't bad prices for mags. Even at $35 they're much less expensive than the mags for my HK's. You are right, nothing wrong with Mec-Gar's as they manufacture OEM mags for several gun brands if I'm not mistaken.

I was thinking 3914. I'm guessing it's probably I read that thread about the gold color filled 3914 lower in the thread list. Sorry about that.

The original mags are not that hard to find.

A member here on the Forum just sold 27 OEM S&W mags for the model 5904 (and its brethren) for $15.00 each, RIGHT HERE ON THE FORUM CLASSIFIEDS!!!

WITHDRAWN...45 magazines for sale

I know it says "45 Magazines".

That's how many he had.

Check out the link.

He sent me pictures of the mags he had for sale.

He's a nice guy and he had great prices.

If I didn't already have plenty of the mags I collect, I would have bought a bunch myself.

It pays to read your Forum Classifieds.

John

It's home! Picked her up and went out on the range. This is a one ragged hole shooter. A few more mags and a holster are topping the list of gotta haves.

That's a great looking gun. You stole it at that price. The LGS probably was having a hard time selling it because it's not a Tupperware gun.

Yeah, there was a lot of plastic sitting in there with it. Other than a row of revolvers and a few 1911's, the rest were polymer. I'll have to give S&W a call tomorrow and see if I can get a ship date on it. Might even do a search for a box and manual.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I like the adj rear sights, and it has a rounded trigger guard too. Nice find!

I'm with you, I love this adjustable sight. What's really amazing is I didn't have to adjust it on the range, it was spot on allowing me to drop one round after another on top of each other. I kinda like the rounded trigger guard as well, and it has some beautiful checkering on the front. If I ever need to impress someone on the range, this is the gun I'll grab.

I had one identical to that one. It was indeed a sweet shooter. I ended up selling it as I also have a 5906 that I bought from a co worker.

Those 59xx guns make me look like a Marksman!

I gave S&W a call this afternoon. The 5904 shipped on Feb. 10th, 1992. Her appearance sure doesn't reflect her 31 years of age. She's been well cared for.

I've always enjoyed the 3rd generation Smith 59xx series. Here are my two 1989 5904s. One is the 5904 my father bought new at a gun show in May of '89 for $400, which he passed on to me in 2002. The second one is also a 5904 circa 1989 that I picked up at a LGS back in 2017 for $375. These things just run and shoot true.

Very nice! I see both have the square trigger guards. Mine has the newer version round trigger guard. Accuracy is outstanding on these guns, my first target mirrors yours, with the first shot pitting the X.

Nice find, my friend! $400 for a fine 3rd Gen that would cost well over $1000 if produced today. Enjoy the heck out of that thing. All my 3rd Gens happily eat anything I feed them.
