Default New (to me) Smith and Wesson 4013

uploadfromtaptalk1454354706231.jpgSo I picked up this Smith and Wesson 4013 after a long search for a reliable, compact .40. It came with the original box and 2 magazines. I'm pretty impressed so far, seems well looked after. Haven't fired it yet, but now I need to get a decent holster...

Great choice! Make sure you keep the original box just in case you would like to sell it further down the road. I carry a 4053 quite often, it is the DAO (double action only) version of your 4013. It rides in an Alien Gear holster and fits perfectly in their firearm matched kydex shell.

Their customer service is top notch and their holsters are modular. I have 1 holster and 3 shells for whatever I choose to carry. The 39-2 kydex fits all of my 39 series and the 4013 kydex fits the 4053 and my 4513TSW. The full size 1911 shell fits my bilboard perfectly too. I highly recommend you check them out! Enjoy

I picked up a 4013 when it first came out, I want to say it was somewhere back in 1992. They seemed to have went away for awhile and then 4 or 5 years later they came back with Tactical on the slide.

One of my friends had his converted to 10mm. I didn't care for the way the 10mm shoots after shooting my friends. The muzzle lift increased noticeably due to the light frame. I still have it, and it is one of my favorites still. Good luck with it.

Two different pistols. The 4013 is a single stack large frame. The 4013TSW is a double stack medium frame. The 4013 can be converted to 10mm, but not the 4013TSW.

The 4013 this poster has is the alloy frame double stack. They made a few that were not TSW's so all non TSW 4013's are the single stacks on the .45 all steel frame. Looked at a non TSW 4013 just a couple weeks back at a local shop.
You are correct in the single stacks being more rugged and appropriate for a 10mm conversion. The single stack 4013 is a much more "robust" steel frame design based of the .45 platform than the double stack 4013 which is an alloy frame based of the 6900 9mm platform.

The 4013 single stack large frame also has an alloy frame like the 4013TSW (either railed or pre-rail).

The 4013's robustness is in the barrel dimensions.

My 4013's slide & barrel weigh 17oz.

My 4013TSW pre-rail's slide & barrel weigh 14oz.

Yeah, just to be 100% clear here (I had to read these posts 4 or 5 times before I realized what was being said), there is no such thing as a steel-framed Model 4013 or a steel-framed Model 4013TSW. Both only came with alloy frames... albeit very different alloy frames. I own one of each... love them both! S&W did no one any favors by just added the suffix "TSW" to "4013" when, in fact, the original Model 4013 was being discontinued and the new designation of 4013TSW was then being given to a very different gun.

Pardon my half-senile old brain for feeling this post is necessary. Maybe other members got it straight the first time they read it. I did not.

Have handled 2 4013 single stacks that were heavy Steel frame guns on the more robust .45 cal platform. Almost bought one for a 10mm conversion but had a MK 3 Shorty .40 pop up at the same time and could only snag one so--. Also have seen 3 alloy frame double stack 4013's that were NOT marked TSW's and wonder why Smith did that with the same model #??

Well, I don't know what to say to that. People say you should "never say never" when it comes to S&W because non-cataloged special order cop guns or PC guns or Frankengun combinations are always a possibility. All I know is that if I ever see an all-stainless 4013 or 4053, I'm buying it in a heartbeat!

Hello All
I'm with TTSH as I've never seen a 4013 steel frame and I've looked high and low. Now a 4013 slide will fit on a 4516 steel frame so maybe it was a frankengun, but you saw what you saw. I too would buy a 4013 with a steel frame in a heartbeat. My 4013 is a 10mm conversion and I've played with putting the slide on my 4516 but just can't seem to do it, yet!

Seen and handled 2 4013's that were indeed on that 4516 Steel frame and frankly thought that was the norm not the alloy frame! If I see another will snag it now that I know!!!
Seen several alloy frame non TSW double stack 4013's also.
May be where I am or ?? but is what it is. I came to the party on the 3rd gens late and only around 10 years ago when my Son bought me a 1066 for a birthday present. Before it was Browning High Powers and 1911's. Now I'm hooked have a dozen or so and--.

If they were actually using a 4516 frame it still would have the 4516 model number embossed in the frame making it obvious than it was not a factory configuration.

The only documented factory compact 40S&W with a stainless steel frame I'm aware of is the pre-rail 4056TSW.

At 37oz. it's noticeably heavier than the alloy framed pre-rail 4013TSW at 28oz.

4013TSW & 4056TSW (pre-rails)

Wow!!! Now, that's something that you don't see very often... like never... a pre-rail 4056TSW.

My 4013 with a 10mm conversion single stack upper fits my 4566 lower, uses the 4566 mags with .40 and 10mm just fine

Both were marked as 4013's and now that I think about it both were at the same shop. Wonder if it was some type of custom order as that shop handles a LOT of Smith LE trade in's. They have a 4013 pre rail TSW with the factory decock only right now for example in the case.
It's also where my Shorty .40 and the 2006 MINT 5906 I have came from.
