Default Got a New 6906!

I've had a few over the years but sold them off. There was another post on here about police trade in 6906's from Standard Law in Ohio, so I ordered one. $275 plus tax and 15 bucks to ship. 3 factory mags. With ffl fee, I'm in it for about $330 bucks.

It's in pretty good shape. Older squared trigger guard, which bummed me a bit, but all stainless parts, which I much prefer. I'll get pics up soon, but it has LCSD-551 on the dust cover. Any idea as to what Sheriff's Department? Serial number TDL 4226.

I'm curious to see pictures of this pistol. I asked them to send me a a picture of the gun via email and it looked rough.

Here are some pics. mags are NOT marked "For LE USE ONLY", so they're probably original to the gun. Square trigger guard, maybe 1992? Gun was FILTHY, but barrel was surprisingly clean. Frame and slide were caked in black. Grips, too. I bet that grip had never been off the gun. Getting the pin out was a real chore. Cleaned it all up and much better now.

I happened to catch the original Point Break with Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze last week. Off duty cop uses his 6906 to try to stop the bank robbery at the end. Square trigger guard just like this one. Got me wanting one again! Gonna try to shoot it this weekend, but it is COLD here now. Probably replace mag springs just because, and recoil and firing pin spring, too.

Nice old soldier for sure. Glad you got it and giving it the respect it deserves. I really like the LE marked pistols.

Nice. Those hooked trigger guards are really growing on me. If you decide to change out the sights Trijicon makes a nice set for this series, and LPA makes an adjustable rear that fits them too. Not that it needs new sights.

Pretty nice - that's a very good price! I've seen a picture of one of these posted here before - did anyone ever determine who "LCSD" is? Must be pretty good sized Sheriff's Dept (I assume). Either way - the 6906 is a great handgun...

My 6906 doesn't have that hooked/squared trigger guard:

http://smith-wessonforum.com/members...2696-6906.html

But I kinda like the way it looks. I think my Beretta M85 Cheetah has one of those. I don't look at that gun very often. I'll have to check.

Sexy!

I picked up my 6906 a couple of years ago as a beater 9mm. I've grown pretty fond of it.

Thanks for the comments. Two of the mags have witness holes on both sides, even on one and odd on the other. Third mag has only even on one side, and one single hole on the other. All factory mags though.

Shooting it tomorrow. Gonna be brutally cold but got all three mags loaded up with my reloads. Probably shoot 100 rounds or so. If all goes well, as I am sure it will, I'll order new mag and recoil springs and into the rotation it goes.

Shot it yesterday. Had 3 mags loaded but could only get through 2 due to the cold. 4 degrees as I was pulling into the range, not counting the wind chill!! Warm cases were stuck to the snow on the ground, but I got them all. Handles my 124 grain reloads fine. Soft and smooth as I remember all 3rd gen's were. Ordered some new springs just because and into the rotation it goes!

SN puts it 1988-89, if I'm reading SCSW correctly. Also, if I remember my history correctly, mags only started to be marked LE only after 1994, when the ban was enacted.

Regardless, nice pistol for a nice price. I love my 6906.

I know. Just commenting that the mags were pre 1994.

Correct LASD.

Most Sheriff's use Office and not Department, so that helps cut back possibilities by a large margin. There are several "L" counties in and around Ohio, but everyone I looked up said "Office". Second the number, in this case "555" indicates that they issued a very large number of these guns. That cuts out several more possibilities. The first three Google lead me to that (at the time) were Department and had a good number of Deputy's are:

Lake County Sheriff's Department - Indiana

Lake County Sheriff's Department - California

Lake County Sheriff's Department - Illinois

Made me wonder if it isn't LCSD - California and hence the confusion between LASD and LCSD. Just speculation. Anyone know if any of those department's carried the 6906?

Owner got back to me. It's from Lucas County Sheriff's Office in Ohio, which is where I bought the gun from so it makes sense. The 551 was either the officers shield number or possibly unit. Can't imagine what agency would have units designated by number so I'm going with officers shield number.

Interesting that some of these Standard Law 6906's are marked LCSD-XXX and some are marked LCSO-XXX. I wonder if there was a change somewhere along the line or if just depended on who was doing the engraving. I noticed that there is also a little disparity in the size of letters / numbers from gun to gun.

Other than the square trigger guard, is there anything different about the older ones vs. the newer ones? Were the newer ones an improvement? I seem to recall something about the extractors being different. I fired 24 rounds the other day in negative zero wind chill and couldn't take the third magazine it was so cold. Fired all of my reloads nice and easy. I have new magazine springs and a recoil and firing pin spring on the way, just because I do that to all my used guns. But the gun looks tight and being retired law enforcement, I gotta think a service gun wasn't shot much other than qualifications. I know I never put more than 500 rounds a year through any of my duty guns, and that was with me shooting occasionally on the side.

Matter of fact, the filthy insides and grips, and the very clean barrel makes me think the cop ran a bore snake through it when he shot it at qualification and never even broke the gun down. I had to hose it down with brake cleaner to get into the crevices. I can almost guarentee you the grips had never been off. Pin was really jammed in there and very gunked up. Took some good whacks with a punch and a mallet to get it out.

Would have been great if they engraved an LCSO shield next to the number.

Very minor differences, many of which were just to reduce costs for S&W. Sights and shape of trigger guard being the most obvious changes, both of which were more about aesthetics than anything else. I have had older 3rd Gens and I have had newer 3rd Gens. All went bang every time, delivered the bullet where I intended and functioned the same. I actually tend to prefer the 6906 like you have. I like the hooked trigger guard and the blade sights are less expensive to replace.

Police trades ins are always a little bit of gamble (as I am sure you know). Some guys take care of their gear, some guys are "They are only tools." sort of people. My department requires an annual armorer's inspection for a details strip and cleaning. Some officer's guns simply don't need it, other's seem to only get cleaned when the armorer does it. I worked for a department back in the day that NEVER inspected our guns, some people carried the same gun for 10+ years and never did anything buy spray it with WD40, wipe it down and called it good. One of those guys had a gun so grimy and gross that he went to qualify and they couldn't get the slide open. Had to rebuild his gun. He got a 5 day rip too.

Nice! How many members does the LCSO have? How long did they carry the 6906? Was it a uniformed cops gun? Gotta think it was a plain cloths man or a detective. Why carry a 6906 in a duty rig when a 5906 would work better?

I shot an email off to the Sheriff asking if he could forward my email to his lead firearms instructor, as soon as I get my questions answered I will pass the info on to you.

Since they cover Toledo, OH I imagine they must be fairly good sized.

It was not uncommon to issue the 6904/6906 to everyone. Just big enough for a duty rig, just small enough for a plain clothes officer. Since one of mine came with the 15 round mags + extension / sleeve, my guess is that if the grip was too short for a Deputy's hand they issued out the longer mags. The 6906 is really the same size as a Glock 19, which is also issued to a number of agencies for its multi-use role.

Thanks MLK! Hope to hear back! Friend of mine worked for a county PD in NY. Uniformed cops had the 5946. Detectives had the 6946. One detective I met who was bounced back to uniform had his 6946 as a uniformed duty weapon.

I bought one from LE Supply and it came in today. Almost new and clean. Marked LCSD595. I wish I had the money to buy a couple more. I don't think the magazines that came with the weapon have ever been used.

After just buying two I have been looking at my savings account and thinking that two more just might be in order. Having been in the 3rd Gen game for a while, deals like this start out as feast but quickly become famine. I believe the phrase "you snooze you lose" is in order. Plus two more cleaned up 6906 safe queens today become excellent trade bait in the future. Of course I am also eye balling a local 915 for sale. So many guns I want, so little disposable income.

Just a couple of weeks ago you said " MIGHT go back to 3rd Gens". Now your thinking about filling the safe with them.
You should seek some help for your 3rd Gen addiction.Got a New 6906!

Were the grips post-recall (dimple on bottom)? That's a very early pistol.

Might go back to carrying one on duty, never emptied my safe of them or stopped shooting them at the range. I did let a few go that I regret and now I want them back. But an addiction? Nahh. I don't consider it an addiction until I am willing to sleep with an ugly woman for a pitted rusty 5904 with cracked grips... Okay so maybe it's an addiction.

LOL, admitting you have a problem is the first step.
I know this because.....I have a 3rd Gen "problem", but I'm ok with that.

I don't sleep with ugly women, but I do sleep with a 6906. Please don't judge me.
