Whats a 5924 worth?
Hello all,
I just picked up a 5924 dirt cheap. After buying it and doing some research it seems like these are pretty rare. I saw some scuttlebutt online about some of these being issued in the short time they were produced. This one has all the tell tale signs of a police trade in. Its got a fair amount of holster wear and two ruff spots (seatbelt rash). The bore is still decent/good, overall I would put this gun at a firm 75%. I paid $225 for it and I am plenty happy with what I got for my money, gun shoots like a champ. I am curious to hear what y'all think it is worth given the condition.

It's hard to estimate as the 5924's do not come up for sale very often. I have seen the more prevalent stainless equivalent (5926) sell from $400-600 depending on condition. While I doubt that helps much. Rest assured having only paid $225 you gun is worth more that. Even a plain old 5904 is going to be worth $325-375 or so in 75% condition. Your gun has the potential to be worth much more to a collector missing a 5924 from his/her gun safe and having trouble finding one. Pictures really do help tell the story.

It's not unusual for someone, especially smaller gun shops or pawn shops, to simply not realize what they have / had. I knew a guy who walked into a pawn shop and bought a 5906 Super 9. The pawn shop bought it, looked it over, thought it was a normal 5906, marked at their normal used 5906 price ($325) and put it on the shelf. 5-6 months later my friend walked in and opened his wallet as fast as he could. I bought a like-new Norinco Type 59 Makarov (military) at the same place for $90 and sold it for $650.

Pitures
Here are some pictures. I am no S&W expert but, when I see a 3rd gen gun in working condition for that cheap, I know enough to buy it. It's just a bonus that it's something rare. Thanks for any input ya'll have. IMG_2355.jpg

I knew it was a good deal. The guy said he inherited it from his father. If I was his dad I would be pissed! Who sells a gun given to them by their father? Who knows whether he was telling the truth or not. I am just glad I saw it right after he posted it. I must have been the first guy to respond to his post. Sometimes its better to be lucky than good!

I would say that pistol is in better than 75% shape.
I am a stickler for condition.......you got a smoking deal.
Should you sell it, you could EASILY double your.money.
The 5924 isn't really rare, but then again it certainly is NOT common.
I would shoot and enjoy that gun like crazy.

Yeah 75% was definitely a low estimate. The only one I found in the recent past on Gunbroker was listed at $850 but did not sell. The most recent 5926's in very good condition sold in the $500+ range. I would imagine yours is worth that.

Thanks for the info. It looks a bit better in the pictures than in your hand. It's not terrible by any means but, the pictures aren't showing everything. I plan on hanging on to this one for a bit. Just in case, does anyone know where to source parts for this thing? Lots of places are out of stock for most things. Are their parts that commonly fail on these guns? And, will parts cross over from any other models. Thanks for any help.

Most operating parts are going to be the same as for the 5904/5906, so there shouldn't be any shortage there.
But first, order a side plate and a set of grips from S&W. Those are unique to the frame de-cocker models. You should be able to get the side plate, which is the most important. You have a decent set of grips, having a new set "just because" is always good.

FYI I bought a 5924 last summer, shooter with no box and three mags for $500 from a retired trooper. It is the only one that I have ever seen in person and am happy with the purchase.

I recently sold a 5924, and you can find the old ad here in the classified with a search. It came with all docs/box and had little to almost no wear. I sold it for considerably more than what you paid. You did VERY well. These are rare indeed, if that is the model and pedigree you collect.
