I did notice that. Can't tell whether they are "pre-bans" or not (as required by my loony moonbat state) but that is a good price for all you free state folks.

I'm still waiting for MidwayUSA to correct a problem with my account so I can then go ahead and order some 3913 magazines from a different source. I see they are already disappearing slowly but surely on the Greg Cote site this morning.

Just a note for anyone that has a 945 or 945-1... the last time I ordered some from S&W for my 945-1 (gun & magazines long discontinued), they looked like they were simply 4506 magazines with a second catch/latch cutout to work with the 945.

Out of curiosity, I slid one into my 4506-1 and yup, it worked... so those with a 945 might want to jump on a few of the 4506 magazines from Midway, if any are still left at the time of this posting, to have some spares for their gun. It looks to be a simple matter of using a square and round needle file to make the cutout in the mag body.

Just bought 2 3913 magazines from Midway, and 5 assorted grips. Hanging around here has got me carrying a 3913.

Some of the legislation introduced in the aftermath of the San Bernardino shootings, if passed and signed into law, will remove that grandfathering and ban possession of any magazine over 10 rounds.

Also being considered, is legislation that will ban semi-auto's capable of accepting over 10 rd. capacity magazines... meaning any semi-auto with a magazine well is in jeopardy.

So there might be a glut of stuff flooding out of CA before 1/1/17 when new laws take effect... magazines, semi-autos, people...

They probably are already (or perhaps will do so at the right time). Doesn't mean they will be successful. Moonbat judges in moonbat states tend to go along with moonbat pols and their anti-2A ideas & laws.

We have it awful here in Massachusetts but California is even worse. Much worse, in fact.

Just 5 curved baseplate 3913/3953/908 magazines left as of this morning.

But...

I took the time yesterday to attack the gun room and really get an accurate inventory of all my 3rd Gen magazines. You can't imagine how disorganized I am when it comes to spare gun parts including magazines. It's pitiful.

The good news is that I'm not quite as bad off as I thought I was. I found 2 used 3913/3953/908 magazines that I'd forgotten I bought. In fact, I found a lot of magazines that I'd forgotten I'd bought. Doing an inventory once in a while is a beautiful thing.

So now I'm a little more relaxed. I know where there is one used magazine for sale that I can pick-up for maybe $25 (or less?) with a little haggling. If I can do that, I'll only be 3 short of my immediate goal.

Meanwhile, I see that 1006 magazines and 4013/4053 magazines continue to bring insanely high prices on that big auction website that we can't name. Mama Mia!!!

In the past few months I've seen all metal 645 mags sell for $60 and up on that same website.
But you can pick up 4506 mags for half that on the same site. Not sure why all metal mags are bringing a premium. What's going on with 3rd Gen magazines?

Since I have never once watched the "Walking Dead", I'll have to take your word on the critical importance of sufficient speedloaders and magazines in a post-Apocalyptic world!

I'm just looking to beat what I see as a permanent shortage situation coming on for original S&W 3rd Gen magazines. I knew I was in trouble a while back when I couldn't get any CS45 magazines that actually worked. I've finally gotten my hands on three good ones in advance of my actual someday purchase of a CS45. Same with 1006 magazines. I've now got three brand new ones and I'm holding onto them for dear life in the someday long-shot hope of being able to find and purchase a Model 1006 in this crazy moonbat state.

But I now find myself with seven 3rd Gens that use 3913/3953/908 magazines... and too many of them were bought with just one or two magazines. That's not a very smart situation with original S&W magazines slowly but surely disappearing.

You've got to watch "The Walking Dead" at least for the gun of the week...... most survivors change guns more often than I change my underwear......accept for Rick and his 6" Nickle Python....................I'm guessing because they only have one magazine for each gun!!!!!

It's a documented fact that magazine shortages are caused by folks who buy magazines for guns they don't have.............leaving no magazines for those folks who actually have a gun that mag will work in!!!!!!

So somewhere out there there is a guy with a dozen 39xx mags.... hoping one day to be able to buy a 3913NL...... and.......

He would love to carry his CS45 but only has one magazine; and is a firm believer that one should always carry a spare mag when concealed carrying.... and have at least one spare at home..... twos better!!!!!!

Example...
Marlin 70/70P/70PSS/795/989/989M2/995 and 5-10 others...
same damn rifle, just with different stocks/sights...
Back in the Pre-Clinton Assault Weapons Ban days,
Ramline made a 15-rd mag for 'em. Killed by the '94 ban.

Anyway...Shooter's Ridge came out with a Green Follower mag
as soon as the ban sunsetted...
it sucked, the gamut of problems it had...you name it, it had it.

Champion followed with a Grey Follower mag, but learned from the SR issues...
their issue was wrong glue to hold the two parts of the mag together...
remedied with Plastic Weld by the End User...wheeeee....

Finally, Promag watched those two, then went with a much better design...
their 25 round mags have Zero issues that I've run across so far...
After that, since Promag got it Right, nobody else is making 'em.
Promag has plans for a couple of Drums for those rifles,
but haven't hit market yet.

Depending on who is First to Market for S&W 3rd Gen mags,
will set the pace of the Race.
how good they are sets up the competition to outdo the previous host.

You guys know I'm not one to cause trouble , but while some of you have been carrying on how hard it is to find 3913 magazines, I bought one from a forum member.

$30.00 including shipping with a flat butt plate.

Really some of you need to step up your magazine hunting game.

Ha!!! Like you really needed just one more!!! That's funny!!! You have more than anybody I know!!!

I saw that listing but the open-ended shipping add-on was a non-starter for me. Been there, done that in the past and got badly burnt. Looks like you successfully addressed that little glitch.

I scored one yesterday (as previously noted) and have more in my sights today and tomorrow, partly thanks to another forum member's helpful tip.

BTW, my search yesterday only led to one magazine, but I discovered a very low profile shop that could be a real S&W collectibles treasure trove in the future. Stay tuned on that interesting find.

Interesting story... thank you! So maybe there's hope for the future after all. Sure would be nice to find reliable third-party 3rd Gen magazines for $25 or less for all the models and not just the 5900 series.

Well, I just saw a first on that big auction site that we can't name... ... a used flat baseplate 4013/4053 magazine being offered "Buy It Now" for $99.99 plus $2.99 shipping! And I thought I had overpaid.

This isn't the result of an out-of-control bidding war. This is the seller's flat price.

It will be interesting to see if anyone buys it. I think that's outrageous but maybe not. I guess we'll see.

++++++++

ETA: I just saw a new record price for a Model 1006 magazine: $150.00+Shipping ("Buy It Now").

If this keeps up, I'm going to switch from buyer to seller!

A few months ago there were 4 or 5 1006 mags sold for 170-175 on an auction site.

It's just crazy! I must have missed that one. I thought $150 for one magazine was a new record.

I was buying them up for ~$30 last year at this time when the prices started going up. I paid $40 for a few before, almost overnight, the prices shot through the roof. I have a pretty good supply of ten or so plus these new in the wrapper. I wish I knew what caused it; was it real or panic?

Man, I hope you've got those things heavily insured!

I went searching again today for more 3913/3953/908 stainless steel magazines. No luck at all on them... but I did find some black S&W 3914/3954/908 magazines. Not ProMags but real S&W magazines. Price was not cheap (they were on consignment at an expensive shop) so I passed... at least for now.

Final day of magazine shopping tomorrow! But I'm feeling lucky based on a forum member's tip! Stay tuned!

Default Sure economics are a factor......

But whoever actually makes the OEM mags for S&W has the dies, templates and whatever tools that are needed to make them. Maybe they are selling new stuff like gangbusters, but a short run of scarce mags would go a long way for customers and would surely be snapped up and profitable at today's prices.

One dealer I hit today... certainly not a personal favorite of mine... absolutely insisted that S&W is still doing small runs of 3rd Gen magazines every year. While I don't think it is widespread, it could explain the occasional appearance of CS45 and 4516/457 magazines in new style packaging from time to time. And those aren't the only ones.

Is S&W actually manufacturing or contracting them as he said? Or is S&W just releasing new old stock? I have no idea.

One thing is for sure: I haven't seen any 10mm magazines in new style packaging and the same goes for 4013/4053 magazines as well.

3913/3953/908 magazines? I'd have to say that the verdict is still out on them.

This wouldn't surprise me. From time to time magazine components show up at Brownells or Midway. Along with other small parts.

Smith might be commissioning sub contractors to keep a trickle of parts going.

We can only hope.

I accidentally bought a couple of mags, I was searching for extras for my 39-2. These are S&W but too short. One has a curved base plate, the other is flat.

Did you get 3913/3953/908 magazines by mistake? If so, I can trade you for a couple 3906 magazines which should fit your Model 39-2. PM me if interested.

Yeah, the whole 3rd Gen mags & parts thing is still quite the mystery to me. Plastic wrap-around grips, in particular, seem to come and go all the time. What's with that? Is it new production? Or just new old stock being released?

Sure wish we could get some definitive answers out of S&W but I'm not holding my breath. S&W CS doesn't seem to know any more than we do.

3913 magazines are easy to find.
CDNN just sold out, but Midway and Greg Cote both have them.
Midway only sells the flush fit but you can buy the curved baseplate separately from them.

TTSH,

I'm beginning to think you are a stock holder in the 3913 magazine production / distributor.

I had no plans to buy any 3913 magazines, until reading this thread. Now, I've ordered three more, and thinking I've found some kind of hidden treasure when I find them in stock.

I do prefer the curved baseplate. It's more comfortable for range use and I don't normally carry my all-metal 3rd Gens. If I did, I'd want the flat baseplate. Right now, MidwayUSA is out of the curved baseplates even as an option. Numrich has the curved baseplates in stock, but the price is a little steep, especially considering shipping.

As you point out, MidwayUSA is out and Greg Cote has only 5 left. My problem with Greg Cote is his flat shipping fee of $6.95. Makes buying one or two magazines at a time very expensive for an old, retired poverty case like me. At least with MidwayUSA, I can combine the magazines with other parts & stuff I need from them and the shipping fee is usually just $4.95 anyway.

As you can probably tell, I am extremely cost sensitive... so it's not just a matter of finding the magazines. It's a matter of not over-paying for them as well.

Ha!!!!! That made me laugh out loud! The last thing I am trying to do is motivate the competition for a limited supply of the magazines I need!

Maybe I better just shut up!

TTSH....just wondered if you have any of the 7rd steel base plate ...true "flush fit" magazines for the 39xx series??????

Originally one shipped with the early Lady Smiths...............

These are the ultimate magazine for concealed carrying a 39xx.....

Especially for those that think the ambi-safety lever on the right side...prints and...screams "Gun" to the unwashed masses they may meet on the street ..... or it just ruins the cut of their suit coat...LOL

One has been my standard carry mag for about 20 years... 7+1 in the gun and a spare 8rd flat plastic mag as a spare.

I had one, but traded it to another member for a flat bottom 8 round magazine.

I found that the "hook" on the curved base plate magazines were more of an "issue" for printing. That's just me.

If you buy the ones from Midway with the flat baseplates, I can swap base plates out for curved ones with you.

Better hurry though, Midway is limiting purchases to a maximum of 10.

Going to the Akron Ohio gun show tomorrow. The clip/magazine guy puts the S&W magazines aside for me to go thru before others can see them. We'll see what new ones he has.

Please keep your good friend "TTSH" in mind.

And forget that other guy... GaryS. He has too many 3913 magazines already!

I didn't know you were looking for one of those. You apparently missed the thread where another member had one, but couldn't figure out how to get the base plate off. We did a swap because I was curious about that. I figured that out and then also figured out that if you put in an eight round spring, you had an eight round magazine with a flush base plate. Here is the thread. Which you apparently missed.

Anyway, i sold or traded that away after I had dissected it.

Had I known it was such a rare bird, I'd have held on to it.

Oh well.

And I object to your characterization of me having "too many" 3913 mags. I only have 14. And two black ones that go with my 3914. And, as Loretta Lynn once sang, "One on the way."

You're going to give him a stroke, showing pictures like that. A 3913LS, KSD grips, and the original style magazine.

That's first class gun pr0n right there.

Hopefully, you know I'm just yanking your chain. And yes, I did see and do remember your thread (see my old "like" for your post #24).

The funny thing about those rare bird "flat bottom" magazines is that I probably wouldn't even recognize one in some shop's bargain bin or at a show just because my brain is tuned into looking for the typical ones we all know and love. In fact, I'm getting so good that I can reach in and find one without even looking... and even in the dark!

As you say, it would be very cool to own one just due to the rarity factor alone. But as a practical matter, I'm happy enough just to find a regular one in good shape at a decent price.

Anyway, "too many" is a subjective thing and it all depends on how many guns you own that take those magazines. The way I see it, I own seven pistols that use 3913/3953/908 magazines. My immediate goal is to own 3 magazines for each pistol. That's 21 magazines according to my math. So me owning 21 magazines would be "just right" and not "too many"! As of this morning, despite one more "score" yesterday, I believe I'm still 2 short of that goal. That said, a "recount" is probably in order since my recent inventory went partially on my records and not all of them by actual count.

So, it's all a question of how many you own per gun. Since I believe you sold off one 3900-series gun, I think you are over 3 magazines per remaining gun. To me, that means "too many"!!!
