Question Old Topic But Need An Update...

Is anyone currently making... or has anyone made in the past... a .357 Sig barrel for any .40 S&W caliber 3rd Gen?

I've gone through some very old forum threads and the answer way back then was "no"!

I'm guessing nothing has changed in that regard given that 3rd Gens are long discontinued, but I'd like to know for sure. Google has given me nothing helpful.

The reason I'm asking is that I'm considering buying a .357 Sig barrel for my M&P40 FS. They are back in stock at MidwayUSA, albeit at a somewhat higher price than I remember. I think I'd like to play around with it for a bit. For whatever stupid reason, the caliber continues to intrigue me.

Methinks it would be more interesting to obtain such a barrel for a 3rd Gen if that were possible. I doubt it would be cheap if available at all... but you never know unless you ask.

Anyone...?

I have made a couple for myself.
They work just fine.
Because of the high pressure of the cartridge and the fact that there are no commercial producers of these barrels, I am very concerned about sharing any details for liability reasons.

But yes it can be done and no it is not too difficult.

Thanks John. I understand your safety concern and I doubt I'd go the custom-made or self-made route myself. I was just kind of hoping against hope that one of the larger barrel manufacturers might have done a small special run at one time. Sounds like that isn't the case.

I use Storm Lake barrels for my S&W caliber conversions.

If I were more into the full-size plastic pistols, I might do the same. But in my case, the somewhat less expensive S&W barrel will probably suffice.

I've just got to get this .357 Sig thing out of my head. I think it's the result of reading too much and thinking too much about Sig pistols in general. And it doesn't help that .357 Sig ammo is no longer super-crazy expensive locally thanks to Sig's own ammo brand.

Bottom line is that I'm wondering if I wouldn't be better off with a P226 in .40 S&W plus a .357 Sig conversion barrel rather than going with a Sig P226 in 9mm as currently planned and budgeted. Yes, I know the Sig conversion barrels aren't cheap at all and that would be on top of an already very expensive P226.

Truth is that I'm getting very impatient waiting for a MA-compliant P226 in 9mm to arrive at my local Cabela's... and that has got me thinking a lot about the alternative.

I have converted a .40 P226 to 9mm with a Lone Wolf barrel and 9mm sig mags. So maybe a P226 in .40 would meet all your needs.

These days I think of a nice third gen Smith as a $500 gun. Within the last three years I have picked up 40/357 Sigs for a couple of hundred more. I like the Smiths but I like the Sigs too. They may be a little higher now but I think you should consider trying a Sig. A lot of their stuff is pretty nice.

That was the idea when I purchased my M&P40 FS. When the time was right, I purchased a 9mm barrel and 9mm magazines. No regrets so far on that approach.

Of course the P226 .40 is a whole lot more money than the M&P40 FS was... and a 9mm barrel and magazines for a P226 do not come cheap.

We'll just have to see how it plays out. I've been waiting a couple months now. Of course, with my luck, the 9mm P226 will come in exactly one day after I purchase a .40.
