Although they look similar...Dimensionally I think they are different.
Shorter chamber and locking lug placement are likely shorter than the 10mm slide & barrel arrangements.

Lots of people have successfully fired the .40 out of 10mm barrels. Just clean the barrel good after a .40 range session.

Yes, maybe the cost of ammo if you don't reload and shoot a lot of rounds. But the cost of conversion barrel ain't free, and a 4006 ain't a terrible supplemental alternative. And if you own a Gen 3 10xx or two please don't plead poverty. Just dont.
The allure of .40S&W is $13.98 a box (Perfecta)
compared to $29.98 for 10mm. (Buffalo Bore)
And at the time, I didn't have any .40S&W pistols...

But now I've got a couple .40's since the FBI
decided it didn't love 'em anymore...
& bunches of morons RAN to pawn shops to sell 'em off...
so truly awesome deals on .40's are currently available.
Which is why I now have a Star Ultrastar .40S&W,
and a CS40 Which ran me almost $700 for the pair.

I have the 1086 and have several pistols that shoot the .40S&W. I recently bought the little brother to the 1086, the 4043. I love them both.

I do reload and shooting 10mm is not much more than .40S&W and/or .45ACP. I was wondering about the .40 conversion for the 10mm until I bought the 4043 because I liked the platform and how the 1086 fit my hand. Also, an arthritic wrist keeps the 10mm round count down so the .40S&W is a logical choice. Just how others look at conversions for whatever reason.
