Default Mags for guns I dont own...yet

I have read about people doing it, but until today hadn't done it myself.

I am on a business trip in VA and stopped in at a LGS here. Nice place, very few used guns (my favorite kind).

Looking around and spot an old S&W blisterpack mag from across the store. Head over and find two 4013 single stack mags new old stock and two used (in very good cond.) 3913 mags. Got a little bit of change from my $100.

I have been casually looking for both of these pistols, but the search got a little more serious! It felt weird to buy mags for a pistol I don't yet own, but weird in a good way

I think you'll find it's kinda the norm around "here".
As the supply dries up, it makes even more sense.
It's funny though, I don't do this for ANY other make.
(I guess I did get quite a few new factory MP 5 mags
before I got my MP 5, but that was different). Some
of us even get grips for models we don't have. Yet.

Oh yeah, once bitten by the S&W "bug" you will be hunting down parts and looking for that elusive model for your collection( still looking for a 4516). I have purchased extra grips and magazines, and parts for my 3rd generations for that just in case moment.

Just bought a 1983 Walther PPK/S in 22lr. Newer magazines don't fit older guns.
The older 22lr magazines are rarer than hen's teeth and very expensive. So I wound up buying two for big money before I got the gun.
Have a 1970's Beretta 70S in 380, same thing. Seems to be the new normal.

....been there...done that...got the scars to prove it.....bought every black follower 4506 mag I came across before I found the one I wanted....the 4506-1 wasn't an "if or maybe"...it was a "when"..

I bought three S&W Model 52 magazines a full six months before I found the right 52 to bring home. Six months later again and I have two 52's and eight magazines and I feel like it's a fine place to be.

I'm even dumber. I had owned one Walther P-38 and was well aware that modern guns improved on them. I was not tempted by another P-38 or P-1 but Cabela's had an excelent condition P-1 magazine for $4. It must have been left over from the large batch of P-1s they sold for $400. I could give it to Mike at the range for his P-1. I bought it then years passed without running across Mike. A pawn shop that I occasionally check out put up for sale an excellent condition P-1 with no magazine for $299. How could I deny them each others company?

CDNN had Mauser M2 magazines for 9.99 at one time. I bought ten. Why you ask? They are relatively easy to convert a .40 S&W to 10mm. Long term project.

I am guilty of buying mags for guns I want.

Not just mags. Recently purchase a K32 box for a gun I have sought for years. Hoping the box acts like a magnet.

Totally normal for us 3rd Gen collectors. With so many 3rd Gen magazines already classified as "discontinued" or "out-of-stock-no-backorder", it makes sense to track which ones are still readily available vs. not available and buy all you can find of the latter in local shops and shows.

I've been on a mission all this year to build up my supply of certain discontinued and very-hard-to-find 3rd Gen magazines. I'd been buying CS45 magazines for a long while (the older/good ones that work) before I finally found my first CS45. I also had to buy up some CS9 magazines before I felt confident enough to buy my second CS9. I still have a bunch of 4013/4053 single stack magazines I bought when I was trying to expand my collection with two more 4053's and a 4013. Paid dearly for those discontinued magazines before I lost the damn guns to other less concerned buyers. But still, no regrets. I can always sell or trade them down the road for ones I need.

I've even bought a bunch of 10mm magazines even though I have essentially zero chance of finding and being able to afford a 10mm 3rd Gen here in moonbat MA. Again, they can always be traded or resold. They are like money in the bank. Actually, I may be forced into selling off at least some of them fairly soon in order to fund other projects.

Most recently, I have been buying and trading to increase my supply of "pre-ban" 5900-series hi-cap magazines. I now own seven 3rd Gens that use those 5900-series magazines not counting the 6900-series guns... but I am still way short of my goal on genuine "pre-bans", which are required for me to stay out of prison here in moonbat MA.

Such is life when you collect a bunch of older, discontinued guns with little remaining factory support. But it's too late now for me to change. I'm hooked!

Thanks for reassurance that I'm not crazy. Well, not anymore crazy than you guys.

Speaking of crazy, do you ever think you hear guns talking to you begging to be bought and shot?

Well now, you may be a little crazy after all.

In all my years, I can honestly say that no gun has ever actually "talked" to me.

I may have talked a little to it... but I've never had one actually talk back to me!

Especially before the Kolorado ban took effect, yes, I bought lots of magazines for guns I didn't own. Several no longer fit that qualifier

Although I understand why people do it I don't. I'd much rather put that money into mags for which I already own guns

Hopefully you're never in the situation where it's essential - but if you were in Colorado before it became Kolorado, you could have been looking at: "If I don't buy MP5 magazines now, any future MP5 I buy will have to use 15-round magazines if they even exist" and then swap MP5 for any gun you might ever want...

For rare guns/magazines it's even worse "I may not be able to find one of these.... ever" Go find a Wildey magazine for instance - and that's not even mentioning the price.

They sold those things for years at $1.99 until they finally started throwing them in free with any order. I've got about eighty of them in a box,......and one M2 .40. I've got three of the M2 .45's but mags for those are near impossible to find. Very annoying situation.

I buy mags for guns I don't even want as long as the deal is good enough. I went through a period where two Connecticut dealers were selling off tons of oddball highcap pistol mags cheap on GB and I ended up with dozens of different mags for guns I'll probably never own,....but they'll be good trade fodder some day. When new highcap factory mags are being sold for $5 a pop I'm a buyer,......I don't care what they are.

I buy/acquire many 3rd gen mags at gunshows. The 9mm and 40S&W mags are for pistols I have and/or going to have. I also pick up 45ACP mags for people I know that are seeking 45 mags. I have no intention of getting a 45 pistol as I am not a fan of 45ACP.
2-6rd for 4513TSW
1-7rd for 457/4516/4513TSW
1-7rd for M945PC
4-8rd for 4506

I sell them for $5 over what I paid + postage.
The past couple months I sold(to around the country) 9 10mm mags for $45 each +postage. My 10mm mag supplier has dried up(for now).

I think you deserve the honor of being named the undisputed King of 3rd Gen Magazines!!!

I just went through another very disappointing "3rd Gen magazine hunting" day yesterday. Came home empty-handed again.

I desperately need to tap into some new sources.

In the 90s and early days of the 21st century as I roamed the back woods of Pa for work I had 15-20 guns shops I'd visit 3 or 4 times a year.........was always buying up any used or "Sale" magazines for my Smiths, Beretta's and Sigs.......

Currently don't have any Smith 39s but would like a 639..... IIRC "the stash" has about a half dozen 39 mags......

I had them all at the April 23rd 'bunch',in 'tupperware' bins in the trunk. BRatliff did get a 4513TSW 6rd mag from me for his 3rd gen pistol display. Difficult to put out all those mags at a 'bunch' where it's all revolvers on display.
Along with those 45s' I mentioned in my previous post,I got
5-CS9/3913TSW 7rd
4-3913/908 8rd
11-69xx 12rd
6-59XX 15rd
1-909/3904 9rd

2-CS40/4040PD 7rd
12-4013 8rd
4-4013TSW 9rd
2-4006 11rd

11-10XX 9rd

that's only 65 mags, hardly enough to be considered 'king of 3rd gen mags'

I understand but in that case I just wouldn't own an MP5. Kinda like I want a Ferrari but it's just not going to happen

Well, whoever has more (of the very rare & expensive ones) let them come forward!!!

Until then, VOUS are the "King of 3rd Gens Magazines" in my book!

Perhaps Solomon's chosen example wasn't the most compelling to us everyday handgun folks... and I do understand that you live in a great market and where magazine limits at the state level will probably never exist... but for some of us it makes gobs of sense to buy the rare discontinued or "pre-ban" magazines first and the pistols that use them later (if successful in finding the magazines you seek, of course).

You could never survive in crazy moonbat Massachusetts. You'd go out of your mind.

I'm frustrated as heck right now. I have the "pre-ban" problem, of course. I own seven pistols that take 5900-series magazines and I can't find or buy full capacity magazines for them anywhere unless I am willing to pay a king's ransom. Even then it isn't easy as some shops can't confirm that their old used magazines are "pre-bans" and so they refuse to sell them. I bring proof but it doesn't matter. I swear they must think I'm an undercover agent of our anti-2A moonbat lady AG.

Smart! Smart! Smart!

I, too, am collecting old Model 39/39-2 magazines when I am able to find them at an acceptable price. Sometimes I do okay... other times it's price insanity!

One small dealer had one so old and RUSTY that I almost thought he would give it to me just to get it out of his shop. Seriously, I could barely tell what it was under all the rust.

No way José!!! He wanted $65.00 plus tax for that ugly piece of rusting steel.

Needless to say, I walked.

Rare........

I've got at least 12 maybe 15 of the flush fit, 7 round, steel base plate 3913 magazines (shipped with 1st year LS's)....... my primary in the gun carry mag for my 3913/14s and NLs....... backed up with 1 or 2 8 round mags.

.....6 Factory 20rd mags for the 59xx series................

And 20+ 8 round Beretta 92 Compact Type-M magazines...... they're going for $60 + these days.....

LOL in the wacky AWB 90s I figured the low cap magazine cut off would (at the worst) be at 7 or 8 because of all the 7 &8 round 1911 magazines in the country........

LOL in the wacky AWB 90s I figured the low cap magazine cut off would (at the worst) be at 7 or 8 because of all the 7 &8 round 1911 magazines in the country........
Well, the wacky AWB lives on in moonbat Massachusetts. I'm sure it is permanent here... at least until the next American Revolution! Fortunately, most dealers have plenty of almost reasonably-priced "pre-bans" for AR's and AK's. It can get tougher for some of the hi-cap handguns. You can always get some for Glocks but you will pay a completely insane price these days.

The "pre-ban" 15-round 5900-series magazines have the near-unique problem of few discerning features and poor documentation of those pre-ban vs. post-ban features. I should have bought a ton more when I had the chance a year or two back.

Next weekend is the Novi Mich show. I was there in January and on the drive back to NE Ohio,I got upset with myself about not buying some of the mags I saw there, some rare, some still in OEM blister packaging. If I make that show,I'll be adding to my 'king of 3rd gen mags' stash.
The clip/mag guy that I get a lot of interesting ones from at the NE Ohio shows hasn't been participating lately, heard there's some health problems with someone in his family.

Well, I am going out again this afternoon in search of 3rd Gen magazines. After yesterday's complete failure (which I should have seen coming - My Bad!), I've just got to try again.

If that doesn't work, I'll try to attend the West Springfield, MA show next weekend. And if that fails, I'll simply have to pay the scalper's crazy prices or do without.

Yes, but I've bought them all up! Well, except for the ones that GaryS got to first!

Actually, my luck has been pretty good overall. I really shouldn't complain too much. It's just those damn 15-round 5900-series "pre-ban" magazines that are eating my brain out.

You could never survive in crazy moonbat Massachusetts. Mags for guns I dont own...yet You'd go out of your mind.

I understand. I just have a different approach. I'd probably just carry something like a 1911 or a Glock 26/30/36 or Sig 220/225. Walther PPS, Kahr, Shield....etc...etc.

Even here in Pa I've gotten rid of guns with notoriously hard to find mags. And aside from mags I won't buy a gun unless it already has what I'm looking for.

I have never done that with magazines but I did buy a set of 7mm Mag reloading dies several months before I bought a 7mm Mag rifle.

I occasionally buy magazines...but more often stocks that I know might be hard to find. I figure if I never get the gun myself, I can likely "make someone's day" here on the forum when they are looking for a pair.

Wait till you start buying holsters for guns that you don't own yet!!!

I cannot seem to walk past Milt Sparks, Kramer, Davis etc.....even if I don't have the gun I still am buying them. Sometimes for less than$10.00!

I should have been doing this - wish I'd bought more of the DeSantis "Tuck This" for the HK P7 back when they still made them

Once the guns go out of production the holsters follow, and then when you pick up (another) dream gun and can't find holsters for it, life gets grumpy.

Well, you still have it pretty darn good compared to us here in MA. We can have any size magazines as long as they are pre-bans (pre-1994). You can have ANY magazines you want, including brand new ones, up to 15 rounds PLUS you get to keep what you already had (with plenty of warning to buy more) in magazines over 15 rounds.

I'm not saying it's a good situation... but compared to us here in MA, you have it made in the shade magazine-wise.

No luck today either but I didn't get as far as hitting my prime prospect. Breaking for the long weekend now... but I'll resume the "quest" for more used 3rd Gen magazines next Tuesday or Wednesday!

You wouldn't believe this...but I've bought mags for guns that haven't even been invented yet, in case they are invented, and they have mags over 15 rounds. Which, as everyone knows now, are MUCH more evil than mags of 15 rounds or less. Hello, Kolorado!

No question, but it's a caution to those in still-free states: it *CAN* happen to you!

In practical terms, we're limited to 10rd magazines on new designs - there are no 15rd MPX magazines for instance, so you get a blocked 20 or a blocked 30 or a stock 10rd. Pretty much no one will ship anything in over 15 so good luck getting an M&P 9mm for instance and blocking it to 15.

I still wouldn't trade places with you, but don't think we've got it easy. I did stock up "with plenty of notice", but remember this was post-Sandy Hook, so getting even AR mags wasn't easy. Magpul will be forever cherished in Kolorado for the Boulder Air Lift, but there's stuff I wanted that I couldn't get in time

The problem isn't with MY believing it. Sadly the MPX magazines are date coded so even the least scrupulous of people would be hard-pressed to claim they had those before the Kolorado apocalypse....

Actually, you're not the first to do that! We do a lot of research on magazine dates here in the People's Republic, especially for dates right around the 1994 pre-ban cut-off date. Can't recall the details this second but one manufacturer did release magazines for sale before the gun itself was ready to be released. I thought that was a brilliant move! I just wish I had bought some!

Just two magazines? You are slipping! Either that or you have already bought out all the vendors.

I did a show Saturday specifically to find more 5900-series pre-bans. I was somewhat successful in that regard, but it cost me dearly. The good news is that they are in tip-top shape... essentially new/unused. The bad news is that I can't keep buying at those kind of prices. A man's got to know his limitations and I believe I have finally reached mine.

After buying the 4 boxes of rare/collectable ammo for $100,he asked me if there's anything else I'm looking for,I told him 3rd gen mags but he didn't have any in his display cases. He then pulled out 2 large plastic containers,1 for 9mm and 1 for 40/45. There were a lot of mags in them that I would have bought If I had more funds with me. The 2 I picked were marked $35 each,he gave them for $25. Next Novi show is in the fall.
How badly priced were the 59 pre-bans you picked up ?

Sounds like you've got a good source for the future. Sure wish I could attend some of those "real" gun shows out your way. The one I attended last Saturday was kind of a depressing joke. We now have too many gun shows here in MA and it is diluting the shows (both attendance and vendor participation) considerably.

I'd not going to embarrass myself publicly by admitting when I had to pay to secure a couple of "as-new" 5900-series 15-round pre-bans. Sometimes you've just got to pay what it takes to get what you need whether you like it or not. One vendor at the show swore that he has tons of them but didn't bring them. If he was telling me the truth, he could be a good source at future shows in the fall... but I have my doubts that his story was for real. Been there, done that before and those sorts of wild dealer stories never seem to go anywhere.

In any case, just about all of my local sources have been worked to their limits. One possible/potential good source remains but I think I've bought out everyone else! I'm in pretty good shape now after Saturday's show and after a little post-show shopping. I'm not 100% where I want to be... but I'm a whole lot better off than I was before I started this "build up the 3rd Gen magazine supply" campaign!

I could have easily picked out $400-500 worth of mags from in the containers he brought out. I just got 2 of the 'rarer' ones, one for 4013 and the 45 6 rounder for CS45/4513-53TSW.

Not handguns, but I once bought 100 magazines for the West German G-3 rifle from a company called TAPCO. Probably 10-12 years ago or a little more.

I had owned the semi-auto version before then, in fact had owned 2 H&K-91's and a CETME, and later a PTR (U.S.-made clone) that used G-3 mags, but had nothing at the time and didn't think I'd own another. Great rifles but I like the M-14 style and FN-FAL types better.

TAPCO had a bazillion of them and was blowing them out.

I paid 50 cents apiece with shipping.

Later, during the AWB and various elections, I sold them for $3.00-$5.00 each, plus postage. I got tired of going to the post office.

That's a whole lot of magazines you passed up!

Funny, isn't it? I used to have a gun budget. Then I had to change it to a gun & magazine budget because I started getting too far out of balance, mags vs. gun. Then I went too far into the red last year buying up too many 3rd Gens and I had to start tracking (and hopefully paying down) gun debt. Now, I track gun debt and magazine debt as I continue to play discontinued & pre-ban magazine catch-up.

What a situation! This is what happens when you buy discontinued guns with no spares or just one spare. Then, suddenly, you wake up one day and smell the coffee. Suddenly, magazines become a higher priority than guns... and you morph from being a gun collector into being a discontinued magazine collector!

But then you know what they say. When the value of your magazines starts to exceed the value of your guns... it's time to go out and buy more guns!

Rinse and repeat!
