Default Serial number dating please.

Hi all,

I see that you need a 100 dollar book to find out this and the sticky here asked us newbies to post up our serial number and one of the members here would most likely be kind enough to let us know.

The first one should be rather simple, it is a 6906, with a serial number of TVV4675.

Now for the fun one, this is a old 38 special revolver I believe my Grandfather bought through the DCM in the late 1950's.
It was a 6 inch, but the barrel was so pitted and shot out I found a 5 inch new barrel at a gun show and had it installed. The gunsmith also re-timed it and and checked. It's in top working order and shoots fine.

The serial number on the crane are reads 7315. Now on the bottom of the grip, there is a number 2, the hole for a lanyard loop long removed, then 137.
I have retained all the old parts, the barrel and I have a custom set of grips, and yes I have the originals saved.

Any help would be great.

Hello,
From the information in the Standard Catalog your Model 6906 dates to about 1991ish.
Your revolver on the other hand is a mystery to me. I would suggest posting a new thread in the revolver section asking the question with a couple of clear pic's of the revolver.

A clear picture of the butt of the revolver, with the grips removed, would go a long way towards identifying your pistol . . .

October was the last date I heard for it's release. See post #35 and don't shoot the messenger.

Fourth Edition

OK-one more time. The official location of the serial number on a Smith & Wesson revolver is on the butt-as mentioned previously. Get that number and you'll get a fairly accurate shipping date.
