I have a full sized SW1911TA. It has the rail. I put on a set of pearl grips with the S&W emblems on it as well as a Wilson Combat Slide stop and Ambi Safety. I am a lefty. I also did a mag well. I use it for CDP at IDPA.

5946 - no question. It saved my life.

I agree with Engine49Guy, The Shorty 9 (and Shorty 40) are about the sweetest ... out of the box ... S&W Semi-autos I've ever shot. I also have a 5906 and 3913 that were tuned a bit that pull a close 2nd.

I only wish I could get a .357 Sig barrel for the Shorty 40.

My favorite is a 5906 the second pistol I bought a few years ago. I like the weight and very comfortable to shoot, so far haven't seen anyone else at the range with a 2nd or 3rd Gen.

I need to add one that I aquired since my previous responses.

The CS9. In spring and summer it has become my most carried pistol. It is the smallest pistol I own. 3rd gen reliability and it is an accurate little gun. 380 sized with 9mm ballistics. And it is a joy to carry.

It may become my favorite carry gun. But Im going to wait and see how the stainless example CS9 I just won off the auction board works out. I think I am going to find a single sided safety/ decocker - in stainless - and send it to BMCM for installation.

The stainless may hold up better in the heat and high humidity here. Especially when carried IWB. Regards 18DAI

I have to say it’s my 1076. Really like the way it handles the 10mm.

My shorty 40 is my favorite although my 1076 is also my favorite

So I have two favorites and I don5 pla6 favorites

The Shield 1.0 9mm with an extra mag. I carry AIWB and this gun is the perfect size for this. It shoots X ring at 7 yards, has decent recoil and fits my hand well. I sold all other pistols and just have the one.
I also have a snubnose revolver with hammer that I carry as another option from time to time with 2 speed strips.

It is my M41 with my M46 a very close sec. My all time favorite S&W handgun is my Model 627 with a 5" barrel in 357 cal. Thats as of last Oct 2017.

I gave up all my Model 41s for just Model 46s, plus a few Colt Match targets and my High Standards.

The 46 is every bit as (or more) accurate as a model 41, make no mistake about it. The model 46 was originally produced for the Army Marksman Unit.

It would be a hard call to determine which of the S&W Model 46s, High Standards, and Colt Match Targets are more accurate. They all pull very tight groups at 50 yards with match ammo. The Giles High Standard within 3/4" in Ransom Rest.

Easy for me, as at this time I only own one Smith & Wesson semi-auto. That is my model 41 which was manufactured in 2007. I have owned 3 of them in my lifetime. The other 2 were older pistols and more nicely finished, but my current one shoots exactly the same and I feel very fortunate owning it.

For the range it'd be my 52-2, for carry it's my Performance Center Shield 9MM.

My favorite S&W auto pistol is my 40 Shield. I purchased it in response to numerous repeated and reported hot spots of neighbors letting their guard dogs out to run at large to sic themselves on pedestrians on the street in my daily six mile single family residential neighborhood walk. Sure enough, after announcing to all concerned that I am no longer unarmed, it (my 40 Shield) saved from a 99% certain severe mauling when two dogs, a Chow and German Shepherd, ultra short range ambush charged at me full bore from ten feet away. I had a fraction of a half of a tenth of a second to spare in drawing and cerebellar pointing and yanking the trigger from four feet away. I think the 40 Shield is the ultimate common sense no-frills concealable moderate-power self defense sidearm, until S&W figures out how to stuff a few more rounds into the unused grip width space, sort of the way P365 has done so.

As soon as I was done making my post located immediately above this post, I exited the office and proceeded on a lah tee dah basis to do my first of three daily two mile walks in my nice, quiet single family neighborhood. Twenty-seven (27) minutes after the time stamp on my post above, ten blocks from my office, a medium size dog runs full across the street to 12 inches from my ankle to overtly and energetically and agitatedly register its manifest displeasure at my ankle suddenly being one quarter of one tenth of a second from its gnashing teeth. The nice lady at 1707 or 1719 Chestnut Drive hurried across the street to nervously scoop up her canine threat. Rounded off to the nearest reasonable fraction of an inch/nearest reasonable fraction of a second, it came within zero inches/I came within zero seconds of clearing leather and stopping the threat. I explained to the nice lady and local police that I have only one ankle to support a full one-half of my body for the rest of my life, and I will defend it to prevent any injury to it or to any proximal or distal portion of my body; no matter how unimportant they think that portion of my body is to them. By the way, when I phoned the police, the desk person could not hear me due to strong wind. She repeated this three times while I was attempting to phone in my report. I blurted out "That is why I don't carry pepper spray."

My favorite is a 5904 I just picked up, but lusted after one since 1991 when starting as a armed security guard to moonlight as a rookie paramedic. When I could afford one I couldn't find one. Finally everything aligned And I now have one. I like the LW aluminum frame and prefer blue/black guns over stainless.

My EDC is a M&P 2.0 4in Compact 9mm.

For me, it’s my E series 1911. Simply a well made, accurate, reliable gun

I have both a full size and compact M&P 1.0 and enjoy both, but prefer the 1911.

I deeply regret selling my Performance Center shorty fourty mk3s, probably my favorite so far. My only SW auto currently is my 4505 blue steel .45. I don't sell guns anymore (see my first sentence) and I'm looking for a Model 36-2 or 639. That rounds out my list.

Model 3953 or 3954. Point and shoot. I have one of each. The 3953 for dress up and the blue 3954 for dressing down.

Mine has to be the 2nd Gen 645. I do not like and do not own the chopped down 3d.Gen. guns as they are very uncomfortable and hard to hold. I have large hands and I wish they made the 645 with a double staggered magazine so the grips would even be larger and even more comfortable to hold. I liked my first one much, I had to get a second.

Though I have a 639, an M&P40 Pro Series and a Shield 9mm. my 915 is my favorite, everything you need, nothing you don't. Great trigger, hits what you point it at. The new grips make it feel like it was poured into my hand. Bought it with these grips, don't know who made them.

The one I've had the longest and shot the most model 6450

Well, it's my only S&W bottom feeder so it has to be my favorite one.

Best looking handgun ever made, for the common man anyway. Had one on late 70s to early 80s. Favorite now is my 1006 but not 1/10 as pretty as the 39.

Edit:I just saw a 3913 LadySmith mentioned. It comes close or at least closest to the 39 I think. Got one of those too.

I've had several guns, all generations, from cheap to expensive.

But I gotta say, my favorite one is my current M&P9 Pro.




Why? Because it works! It's accurate, lightweight, I love my upgrades (they work too) and it doesn't bother me at all when I carry it all day every day.

I have to agree with Papa . My m945 can out shoot any of my other S&W's , including my m52 . have a 1911PC which is a close second . It's hard to pick just one with so many fine Smiths .

At the risk of offending someone (and no offense is intended) I’ll opine that a favorite gun is like a favorite man: it’s the one with which I’m currently sleeping. My current pillow gun is a stock, slightly battered 469. It’s my latest acquisition. Fun to shoot. Accurate. Reliable. It holds half again more rounds than a 908, so if I have to jump up in the middle of the night in my pajamas, I don’t have to worry about finding some way to carry a spare magazine. I probably won’t need 8+1 so 12+1 is likely overkill (pun intended); the larger capacity isn’t a bad thing, though. - I remember reading one of Col. Cooper’s stories in Cooper on Handguns. He mentions an acquaintance who unwisely chose to visit a woman of unknown repute. He was set upon by several of her companions and when he had to bug out, all he could take with him was his Browning High Power. In Cooper’s words, the acquaintance made good use of the large capacity magazine.

Model 39 and 39-2. I have not found another pistol that fits my hand any better, although a Luger comes close.

For me- the 3913. I had a really nice 6906, and liked it ,so I got a 5906. However, neither one had a strong appeal. After I sold them, I missed them. When I found a 3913 and held it- MAGIC. I had the same feeling with my CZ-P01 as well. Both are lifetime guns, and won't be sold.

I've never had a gun that shoots better than me, they usually just sit on the table until I pick it up and do the shooting with it myself..

I wouldn't shoot that one.. it's rare.. so rare it doesn't exist..

I have a couple 39-2s, a 4053, a 3913, a 645 and a CS 40. I dont care for the trigger on the 645, the 4053 is DAO, and leaves me cold. The CD 40 is rather snappy....3913 nice to carry, 39-2 is the favorite of all.

I like the old Minis sizes compared to the full sized models, but I don't have a favorite S&W semi-auto.

I don't care as much for my M&P 45 as the all metal versions. It'd probably be the first I'd want to shake loose.

Can't tell if you are splitting hairs here or if you don't know what he's referring to... the earliest 3rd Gens were hybrid 2/3rd Gens and "6450" is exactly what S&W put on the box end label although the gun itself was marked 645.

There is no doubt that it is rare, just as he said.

It has to be the 4506. Solid, reliable, easy to shoot, and easy on the eyes.

I own a Nevada P and P SW 4006 that is the absolute love of my life. The Double action trigger is the best I’ve felt, and the single action repeat shots are pure bliss. Something about the full stainless steel construction and grip angle make the snappy .40 caliber recoil mild and even enjoyable. It’s a beautiful pistol with a neat history behind it!

Plus one on the above. Not too big, not too small, just right....

Ukraine -- now more than ever

It's always been the Shield or CS9 that have been my EDC forever, BUT, after searching for years (I live in Ca.) I recently acquired a 39-2 "ASP". So cool! I love the nostalgia.

My favorite S&W semiauto would have to be the 39-2.... Here is mine:



Oh, yeah....it's the only one I own!!

I recently had a really nice 4506, but it was just to big and awkward for me, traded it off for a nickle plated older Colt Detective Special.

But the 39-2 is a sweet gun, good ergonomics, and beautiful proportions. Plus, it has real American Walnut stocks. I'm sure that the synthetic stocks are very practical, but don't lend much panache to the appearance of the sidearm!!

I can't believe I missed this the first time around. I only own two- a 39 and a 39-2, my favorite autos after the BHP.

The only S&W auto I have is the Model 41, but is the most refined and pleasurable gun to shoot. Would be the last gun I sold, and when they are throwing dirt on my coffin, the kids will be running back to the safe to fight over it. Is a 1980 era gun, and I bought a 5.5 in barrel from Midway to mount a red dot on and compliment the 7 in standard barrel that my eyes don't work as well with these days.

My model 41 is my favorite semi auto pistol. Its accurate and has worked great for years.

S&W PPK/S in .380 ACP for me.

I love the Walther PP Series and while the purists hate on the ones made by Smith & Wesson, I honestly respect them for their attempts to improve on the classic design and fix long-standing issues such as unreliability with Jacketed Hollow Point ammunition and the infamous Walther Bite.

Mine has fed everything I've loaded into the magazine so far with 100% reliability, and that's saying something as I actually tried firing it sideways left-handed with an intentionally loose grip to test if it would still feed in a worst case scenario in which I'm downed/unable to shoot it with my dominant hand. Every last round fed without a hitch, and I was using my carry ammo, Hornady American Gunner XTPs, which have a conical shaped bullet.

I've owned so many since the '60s, I don't think I could pick. But of the few I currently have, probably the 4" PC 5906, or maybe the 5" version....

That 469 looks just like mine. It's my current favorite. Do you carry yours on half-cock as in the photo. I do, although I'm not sure why. Maybe it's just a desire to be different. I don't think such a carry has safety issues as with a Colt Government Model.

Tough call.
I love my 5946. It was my first 3rd gen. It's a great feeling and shooting gun that feeds anything I throw at it, including empty brass.
I love my 4566. It's a sweet shooting, Commander sized .45 that cost me a LOT less than a Colt Commander, that feeds anything I throw at it, including empty brass.

Then, there's my 52. I lusted after one for 34 years.
Plus, it's a 52.
Those are my top three. Gotta go with the 52 because it's a 52.
