S&W 39
I acquired a model 39 no dash semi auto from a friend and I would like to know when it was shipped. Ser # is 866XX . I think its early. It has the barrel bushing like the 1911 and has an alloy frame. Thanks for the help It has been engraved "Alan Mitchel" on the top of the slide a has a scull and "Welcome to Hell" engraved on the side of the slide.

As I understand it s/n for autoloading pistols began with 1001 in 1954 and went to 115000 in 1970. In 1970 s/n began with an "A" prefix. So if there is no prefix your Model 39 is before 1970. Since it is a Model 39 and not a pre model 39 it began in 1957 when Smith began their model numbers.
You can do the ratio but I would guess sometime in '68 or '69 for yours. Possibly 1967.
and welcome to the forum.

I'd like to see a picture of that slide. Is that the last owner's name?

Thanks for the reply sir. I will try to get you a pic if I can. I got the gun from an officer here and he inherited it form a fried. I don't know who Alan Mitchel is.

Yeah, I agree. Often names and numbers etched onto a gun are poorly done and detract highly (IMO). However the name, slogan and picture are nicely done. And, along with the refinish work, Alan Mitchell obviously liked his Md. 39. And it appears to be well used.

Does that pistols have a finish on it? It looks like the bluing and anodizing has just been stripped off.
