Default 3913 vrs 6909

I have a 6906 that my son and wife like to shoot. Problem is the 6906 is a little wide in the grips! Being a double stack magazine. So was thinking a 3913 would fit smaller hands be a better fit with the single stack magazine.
I have never been able to have a 3913 and 6906 at same time. So could never Take a 3913 and 6906 to do a comparison
So asking here. How much thinner is the 3913? thanks
{FYI} They do not complain about the 6906, just do the best they can with it presently. And do well with it!All my others are larger or heavier so they stay away from them. 5906 I have is larger. The 4516 about same size but heavy {is like a block like the 5906) and the 410S and 4006TSW is also close but heavier so to them. [b]So right now for them the 6906 is king. But want to put a deal together on 3913 to suit there needs better. But how much better will it be than a 6906 size wise? [b/]
Thanks

The 3913 is a little smaller, diameter wise. I measured them once & if I recall correctly it was about 1/4" smaller?

For me, the 6906, with factory grips, feels very close to my 3914, with rubber Hogue grips on. With factory grips on the 3914 it'd me more of a difference.

With the factory grips it's substantially smaller- almost too small for me, but much easier to conceal, which doesn't seem to be a concern. I'd try to find a stock one, then you can always build it up with some Hogues or a grip sleeve.

If you do begin your search, don't forget to include the 3914, and 908, which are similar pistols in a different finish.

I've had both for over 25 years..........

With factory grips the 3913/14/NLs IMO feel much thinner..... to the point that I don't "like" the factory grips..... mine wear Hogue checkered wood or rubber........

The thicker grips and the right side safety have never been a problem for me and concealed carry.......

IMO it's not just the thickness but the shape of the grips.... with both the 6906 and 3913 the grips are flat..... the 39xx Hogues have an arch to them that fills the palm of the hand ...........the factory 6906 grips are just enough thicker to do the same.

As an aside I used a soldering iron to stipple (fish scale pattern) all the checkered areas on my 6906/5906 grips. I feel like I've got a better grip on the gun..... the factory seem slick to me.

That's an excellent way to put it (and great illustrative pix too BTW).

I am generally a stock factory wrap-around grip kind of guy with my 3rd Gens... and with the factory grip, the 6906 is pretty darn close to ideal for me. Interestingly, the last 3913 I picked up had Hogue "Goodyears" on it and the feel was awfully good for a guy like me who is not usually into rubber... so good, in fact, that I decided to leave them on. That would never happen on any of my double-stacks or large frame 3rd Gens.

To the OP: The only way you're going to know for sure is to let them try a 3913/3914/908/908S pistol and see how it feels to them. I don't think it's quite as simple as the dimensional differences alone might suggest. Just my 2¢.

I prefer the 3913 over the 6906 with factory grips because the S&W Third Gen Autos triggers tend to break close to the frame and with my hand and grip I often find myself pulling on the 6906 frame and I don't experience this on the 3913 or on it's larger version either. Still have my 6906 though.

Grips are like holsters in that how they fit and work is dependent on the user.

Most of my 39xx guns have factory grips and work well with them. My 3914 has Hogues, mainly because I haven't had the ambition to change them. My 6906 has Hogues and they fit like a glove in my hand. I love shooting that thing, but it's a bit too much for me to carry.

I only wish that Hogue had made a finger grove grip like that for the 39xx guns.

Oh, and like holsters, I have a box of discarded grips that I'll try to sell some day.

Thanks so much everyone. Those pics show plenty. They 3913 sure is thinner and the straight grips angle I think will do it. Guess i will start trying to grab one at a good deal. Or best deal i can find. That is the one thing about the 6906 grips they really like! I like that about my 410S and my 4516
Would love to find a straight set of grips that fit a 5906 one day.

6909.....I plugged that into my "Super secret S&W decoder ring" and darn near caused it to melt down....

Everyone's hands are just a bit different, were one thinks the 3900 series is too thin, the same amount will think the 6900 series is too thick.
Usually I would suggest renting one, but the likelihood of a gun range having one to rent is very remote.
You could ask if a forum member lives near you is willing to meet you at a range with there pistol to let you try one out.
Failing this, I would say you will have to buy one.

Factory 3913 grips are noticeably thinner in hand than factory 6906 grips. It may take some adjustment to get used to the thinner grips, but they do conceal the best. IWB carry is similar for both (OWB makes a difference though), but backup double-stack mags do not conceal as well as the single stacks, IME. This is the main reason I go with the 39xx over a 69xx when carrying, especially in the warmer months.

I find this interesting. Many years ago, I was eager to buy my first handgun. Drooling over the 659. I was at the range and a club member had one and offered to let me shoot it. I squeezed that trigger, then squeezed, then choked the gun, but couldn't make it fire. I asked if there was another safety I wasn't aware of. I eventually got it to fire, but I've never had that problem with any gun before or since. It turned me off S&W autos for 30 years. My loss perhaps, but I just lost all interest. Only recently have I acquired 3rd generation pistols and like them.

I have a friend who has one of those thin S&W Shields. Everytime he handles my 3913 he comments on how thin it is.
It's a nice capable CC gun.

I no longer have my 6906 but I did keep the 3913.
It shoots very well for me and I trust it. Needs new night sights cuz they went dark years ago. The Shield is close in size to the 3913 just for reference. I bought the Shield when they came out but don't carry it because I have not gotten used to the safety.

I own a 6904, a 3914 and a CS9 all with the factory grips so I can give you some insight.
The 3914 is noticeably thinner that the 6904 ad the CS 9 in the grips. My wife like the grip feel of the 3914 a lot but to me it feels a little to thin.
For some one with smaller hands that finds the 6900's a little to thick in the grip a 3914 is a great choice. My CS 9 grip however doesn't feel that much different to me that the 6904 does
