Default 4040PD

A fair time after becoming enamored by them, not too many third generations that I still yearn for to add to my eclectic collection.

Living in a large metropolitan area of a gun friendly state has its advantages when it comes to acquiring obscure gun models and I have been fortunate to have added several low production third generations locally.

In my years of pursuing S&W pistols, I have only seen two 4040PDs in person.

I walked away from the first one to think it over and lost it. No so with this one.

Didn't really need it but have wanted to add one of these for a long while.

Extremely similar to my 3913NL with a few subtle differences and a little more heft, this unit is destined to become a carry piece and nicely fits the leather I have for the aforementioned NL model.

Extremely nice design and excellent workmanship by S&W, this pistol is very clean and tight. It is apparent why those who have them speak highly of them.

Ah, good catch - in this case my use of heft, perhaps improperly, refers to size as opposed to weight.

The 4040 slide appears slightly larger and fits a bit tighter in the holsters.

LOL does your 3913 still wear it's factory grips? I find the Hogue grips ( I like the checkered wood) to be more hand filling ....... a

I have a few 39xx compact versions. (Early 3913TSW, 3914, 3953, 3913NL) - all wear the original grips except the 14. It has KSD wood grips.

I have medium hands and the original delrins fit me nicely. Haven't fired the 4040 yet but likely will want more purchase than the delrins offer.

I do like the feel of the houges but not the "tackiness" - I may very well get a set of wood houges to substitute. Good advice / thanks

Congrats on the nice-looking 4040PD! Fantastic carry piece for a 40 cal (my personal favorite), it manages recoil nicely and conceals just as easily as a 3913. You can definitely tell the difference in the dimensions though, it's more robust than a 3913, but works in my leather holsters as well (just a bit more snug).

Brand new Delrin grips are a pain to fit on the 4040 frame, very tight at the heel. I've found that the darker gray, non-dimpled 3913 grips seem to fit the 4040 better (for whatever reason). If you are looking to add some night sights, Trijicon SA15's are the way to go.

Nice catch! I bought mine when they first came out and have been carrying and shooting it ever since. I like the KSD grips on mine.
