Default For the Pre 39 Gurus

Do all pre 39 have the hammer spring pinned in like the 1911? When you remove the back strap the hammer spring is pinned inside and the hammer strut is very short.

I think they are all that way. The spring that drives the hammer is actually called the mainspring.

I'm not sure I understand exactly what you are asking . . .

According to my copy of "The Smith & Wesson Model 39" in the 2006 S&W Collectors Journal, one of the characteristics of the pre-39's was that they used a mainspring plunger, a stirrup plunger, and a stirrup plunger pin to hold the mainspring captive. I think that's what you're asking, so the answer is a qualified yes. It is "qualified" because not all pre-39's demonstrate all of the pre-39 features, for a variety of reasons. I have personally seen and handled pre-39's that had both a long tang and a long safety, for example--even though the pre-39 is supposed to have a short tang and a short safety.
