Default Generations

I see references to 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation pistols, Can someone explain the difference or direct me to a forum topic that discusses the differences. I'm confused.

There is a place that discusses the topic - I'll look for it.

The easy thing to remember is that the 1st gens are 2 digits, the 2nd gens are 3 digits, and the 3rd gens have numbered names with 4 digits.

The differences between them are many and sometimes few, depending, and are definitely detailed elsewhere.

1st Gens are basically the 39 and the 59. (the 52 also)

The 2nd Gens began adding features and adding models with different choices for construction and size. The 2nd Gens also added a much needed firing pin lock which definitely makes the 2nd Gens a better choice for duty, carry or defense.

The 3rd Gens were the pinnacle of the design and they added features but they also added very genuine ergonomic improvements. The 3rd Gens are arguably the best.

Totally agree, while my second Gens were good guns, my third Gens were, and are, some of the best I own.

But not always. Don't forget the Value Line models which are 3 digit models but are 3rd gen guns.
With S&W numbering system there are no absolutes.
