Picked Up My New Model 4586 and Shot it . . .
A few weeks ago, I posted that I found a Model 4586 in 99% condition on consignment at a local dealer and bought it.
Well, yesterday I picked it up, cleaned it up last night and took it to the range earlier today. After a detailed cleaning, I realized that I have a pistol that is essentially 100% like new. You know, whenever I see a pistol like this, it always begs the question, where is the box?
I fired 50 rounds of S&B .45 ACP and 25 rounds of reloads and the pistol functioned as I would expect a freshly cleaned and lubed 3rd Gen to function, i.e., perfectly. Since this is my first DAO 3rd Gen auto, it took a little getting use to, but after the first 3 magazines or so, the groups started to settle in. The target below was shot with the second to last magazine.
The Model 64-3 came along for the ride. Back in 1981, my father-in-law (who was not a gun guy) wanted to get a pistol for home protection. I went along to helped him pick it out and then took him to the range where we fired it for the first time. He never fired it again. I would take it home and clean it once every few years, but otherwise it stayed in his nightstand. He pasted away in September of this year at the age of 95. I've had custody of it for the past year or so, ever since he had to have in-home care (he couldn't pull the trigger anyway). It looks like I'm going to be keeping it until I die (hopefully not for few decades ) and then it goes to my niece, his granddaughter. It shoots pretty good, especially with the Tyler-T grip I put on it a few years ago.

I have owned a 4586 since 1997, and this DAO will be the only .45 I will own. Built like a tank. Accepts all kinds of ammunition. I also am the recent owner of two Model 64-3's, and wished I had bought them years ago... and they were correctional officer revolvers.... probably no more than 1500 rounds over their 30 year career......

Hey Denver D,
Saw that gun on the shop's website, but did not get a chance to get there and look at it. I would say that was a very good deal. It looked mint and the price was excellent. I also have never had a DAO S&W, although I have several of the .45's and love them. I am confident it will serve you well.
enjoy it,

Fixed sight K frames are my favorite revolvers and 3rd Gens are my favorite semi autos.
You have fine examples of both. If that Mdl 64 if your first K frame, I don't think it will be your last.

Yeah, it was on the website, but not for long. I don't know what made me check their website when I did. I was usually checking about once a week or so, and I had just checked a couple of days before. But, for some reason, I just surfed over the evening of the day they put it up. I was in the store when they opened the next morning (advantage of being retired). I was going to come home and copy the picture from the website to include in my initial posting about the purchase, but it had been removed. Wow, they're fast.

I have had many K frames over the years, models 10, 13, 19 and 65, but I always ended up selling them. This 64 I will stay with me to the end because it has to be passed down to my niece. I love her dearly and would have it no other way.

Denver D,
As a side note, I did get to that shop about a week later and bought a Shorty Forty they had just gotten in. So, in a nutshell, we are now both broke.

Congrats on two great handguns!
I am a fan of both 3rd Gen DAO's (I carry a 3953) and fixed sight K frames, Models 64's and 65's being my favorites.
If you ever want to get rid of that 4586. I know a guy in Delaware that will take it off your hands!

Oh yeah, I saw that when I was there purchasing the 4586. It was not on display or on their website at that time, but Mike brought it out of the back to show me. It was beautiful but a bit pricey given that I had just dropped the bucks for the 4586. You have a very nice pistol.
