Default S&W 5946

Inquisitive! Has anyone heard if Smith has released a newer version of the DAO 5946? Similar to a Classic 5946? I saw several brand new 5946's with great CNC quality almost Performance Center grade. Great triggers also. Blue S&W boxes. These are unfired. These according to the S&W 3rd revision book list them 1991-1999 production. My local Cabelas has at least 5 of them for $800.00. Interesting side bar- night sights which states them munch later than 1999? Fifteen shot all stainless steel not the TSW model. ANY THOUGHTS? Thanks,

I have also seen them just like you describe at two Cabela's near me. The Trijicon night sights are dated "14" while the test fire cartridge envelope was dated "July XX, 2015". These must have been an over run of a batch of law enforcement special order pistols. I have no idea, I'm just thinking out loud so to speak!

There are some supposedly new ones on-line too at that firearms auction site that we can't mention... although I don't see any reference to night sights. Price is a little lower than $800... but it doesn't matter to me. I can't buy them where I live. They aren't on our "lists" and the 15-round magazines are undoubtedly post-ban... meaning up to 10 years in prison for me if I even touch one.

I'll stick with the two vintage 5943 pistols that I already own in combo with my 15-round pre-ban magazines. Perfectly legal for me and half the price of these supposedly brand new 5946's.

Default S&W 5946

I went and checked out all five that were at Cabelas. Some were from Springfield and some from Houlton Maine. First spent case were fall of 2014. Sights all said 2013/2014. All were without the mag de-cocker. Big safety to eliminate. I know some were to go to NYPD but unlikely without the de-cocker. RMCP or British Columbia Sheriffs office. Thoughts?

It looks like there are a number of these new/recent production 3rd gens in the stream. It seems like S&W would have the courtesy to it's loyal customer base to make some sort of official comment or confirmation.

It'd take all of 5 minutes to add a page to their website and then they could go back to ignoring everyone again.

The numbers are probably too small for them to bother. And the last thing they need is excessive demand for a discontinued product they can't deliver. Besides, it goes against the "plastic is beautiful" theme and I'm sure they don't want to go there.

The NYPD issues (or used to - I'm not sure if they still do to new officers) standard 5946s just like these guns. I think the RCMP issues TSWs these days but I'm not entirely sure. I'd guess three guns are contract overruns from either or both agencies.

Late to the thread party, but I thought I'd add that I just saw one at my local Cabelas. Totally caught me off guard. This one was Houlton Maine marked with 14 marked night sights. It's on a "blowout" sale for $599.

I had no idea S&W was still making these - or at least recently had. I thought about it for a few minutes, but ended up walking away. The trigger seemed very nice! The s/n marking was different than I'd seen before. It wasn't engraved, lasered or similar...almost looked "melted" into the frame.

There are no 3rd Gen guns in the current S&W catalog (2017), which I have reviewed thoroughly.

Default Probably....

Probably old stock brought out of storage.

Those sound AWFULLY nice but that's much more than I paid for my jewel 686. I couldn't afford one. Let me know when they have a half price sale because nobody wants old steel guns.,

NYPD dropped authorizing 5946s for QC issues a few years back, maybe they're part of a run from them that wasn't delivered.
