S&W M41 Barrel Canada
First time poster here. I recently purchased a new S&W model 41, with a 7 inch barrel. I really like it. I am interested in buying a 5.5 inch factory barrel for it, but I'm having a hard time finding a retailer who can get one. I live in Ontario, Canada, so that apparently makes it difficult. Any help would be appreciated

I purchased a 7" barrel a few years ago when S&W had them in their online catalog. I ordered it through North Silva in Toronto who are the Eastern Canada Distributors. I don't believe S&W has catalogued them for a couple of years now. Try North Silva, but maybe placing a WTB ad on Canadian Gunnutz or some other forum similar will give better results. Welcome to the Forum BTW.

WE have many S&W dealers in Ont, one of them just may have one in stock. I would let my fingers do the work on your computer for you as they will all be listed on there. Welcome from Canada as well to the Forum. Especially from ONT.

I definitely want to keep my existing 7 inch. I just want a 5.5 inch, to put a red dot on it. A real shame that it's so hard to buy a barrel.

You could always buy a Clarke or a Ray-Vin competition barrel
be a heck of a lot easier than getting a S&W factory one, and you should not have any of the now legendary S&W QC issues......

I agree, Port Huron or Detroit or even Buffalo from where you live. Set your purchase up 1st and go see the Leafs play in Buffalo and spend the night. To me that would be a paying trip.

Ya, a little concerned with the legal aspect. I would have to read up, before committing to that. Via email, Murray Charlton, the official Canadian S&W Gunsmith said that I could put a deposit on one, but they are sold out at the moment, and would put in for the next order. I'm not sure of the wait time though. will have to contact them.

The Gov always ruins well thought out plans and wants their sticky fingers in your pocket to do anything it seems.

Providing the barrel is 105 mm plus, your good as far as CBSA is concerned, if CBP, is doing export checks and you are stopped, your screwed as it would be an ITAR violation which carries some hefty penalties.

You can legally import the barrel, but you must do it the correct way, or you are in for a lot of legal trouble.

Ya, tempting but risky. Would probably be a little sweaty, at the border. wish I could legally pay someone to do it, though

In the US, a barrel is not considered a gun, but a gun part. You can therefore buy them online, on Ebay, etc. I'm not sure if the same is true in Canada, but I'd be surprised if there was a legal issue.

Yes you should be able to import it into Canada. I suggest calling New Brunswick and talking to the RCMP as they can advise you on whats needed.

From the Clark website:
"Please contact us for shipping charges if you live outside of the continental U.S."
I take that to mean they can and will ship outside the US, but there may be some stipulation that it has to be shipped to a dealer as opposed to an individual. I would call and ask.

This is from Global Affairs Canada. For the doubters please read.
Q4. I want to buy parts in the US for my firearm and import them into Canada.
A4. The US controls on the export of firearms extends to parts also. For small orders worth less than US$100.00 the US Department of State allows an exemption from the export licence. This exemption, however, does not cover ‘significant’ parts which includes; barrels, slides, cylinders, bolts, frames and receivers. It should be noted that there is no equivalent exemption offered by the Department of Commerce for shotgun parts. Further, there is no exemption for ammunition or ammunition components. Canadian importers should follow the procedure outlined in Q1 (above) to import parts not exempted.
As I said in my previous post, importing parts can be done legally. You just can't legally walk across the border with a barrel stuck in your pocket. If you get caught, your in serious legal trouble.

Found one! Through word of mouth, I was able to locate a used one from a Gun nut/dealer, who sells from home. Pretty happy, since they are really hard to find, anywhere.

Right On, glad you found one and here at home as well with NO hassles or BS involved from either Gov's. Hope you have many years of fun shooting both of these barrels.

Well, the 5.5 inch barrel seems to have a worn locking cam. when the slide is open, the trigger guard almost falls down, under it's own weight, its so loose. The slide rubs the barrel surfaces, since its so poorly fitted. Too loose for comfort. Bummer!

Bummer. Tricky to fix but not impossible.
Adding metal to the front of the lug ( where it contacts the frame ) will move the whole barrel rear-ward relative to the frame.
Adding metal to the cam surface (on the barrel) will tighten its "grip" and leave the barrel in the same position relative to the slide.
***** important ************
Make sure the rear of the slide is flush with the rear of the frame.
The slide must be in this position for correct feed, and firing to occur.
The position of the barrel in the frame dictates the "closed"position of the slide.

What everyone says here about buying iTAR restricted gun parts in the USA and bringing them back yourself is a no no. Your asking for serious trouble. However, there is a walk-in solution, so to speak. Buffalo Gun Works, for a fee, will bring your purchase to the Canadian side of the border.
