Default Stumbled upon a CS9D

I stopped by a local shop yesterday just because I was nearby. I wasn't really expecting to see anything that caught my eye and was hoping not to since I've been trying to sell lately, not buy. Then I spotted a third gen auto, a Chiefs Special. I had never handled one but I love all metal single-stack 9mm pistols and this one was no different. I also like the idea of a DAO for a pistol like this. The asking price wasn't a slam dunk for me and the shop wouldn't come down so I slept on it and went back to get it today. I'm glad I did. The more I handle it, the more I like it and it can use my 3953 and 3906 mags. It hasn't been a safe queen but certainly hasn't been abused either. Hopefully I can get it to the range soon. If we get along I can definitely see this one entering my carry rotation.

Sorry for the craptastic photos. I'm in the middle of a move and don't have anywhere to take decent ones presently.

Small (CS9D), medium (3953), and large (3906) third gen, single-stack 9mm pistols. The 3953's DAO system certainly makes for a nicer trigger pull than that of the CS9D, but the CS9D has the added benefit of second strike capability.

Here it is next to a Glock 43, a polymer pistol of the type that probably brought about the death of these fantastic third gen autos. Both are nice but I still have a soft spot for all metal pistols. I carry a Kahr K9 often, including today to pick up the CS9D. At the end of the day metal or polymer are great if they shoot reliably and precisely.

Nice little find. I also have a soft spot for the single stack 9's. Be sure to give us the range report.

Thanks, I'm happy to have added it to my modest third gen collection. It came with two mags (one flush, one with the finger extension as shown) so now I'm hunting down a few spare parts and mags.

This one joins the 3953 and 3906 as well as a couple of 5946s. At one time I had a 5906 and 3913 but ditched them in favor of the 5946 and 3953 respectively. The 3913 I sold but the 5906 was traded for a Beretta 86 that I had refinished by Cummings Custom Refinishing.

I never could shoot this 5906 well.

I shoot these 5946s much better than the 5906, especially the newer one with the rounded trigger guard. I still prefer the look of the square guards though.

This 3906 is one of my favorites, though I wish Hogue made grips for it as the do the other S&W third gen autos.

I liked this 3913 but never could bond with it like I did the 3953.

I traded the 5906 for this Beretta 86. It needed a little TLC but it was still worth more than the 5906 so I was happy. The only problem is, I can't bring myself to shoot it since the refinish.

Nice CS9D fotoman, I've begun to like DAO for personal carry. Safety free operation comes standard with revolvers, as a J frame is my constant carry, a semi-auto back-up to it for capacity is my usual choice.

I like a DAO because it may be drawn and used with my left (weak) hand. Doing a NY reload to my 3914DAO is faster than any speedloader. Both weapons operate the same way, pull the trigger and it makes the weapon fire. rinse/repeat as needed. Trigger pull is uniform for each shot. Click/Bang each time you pull the trigger. No distracting leavers or switches to throw to make it fire.

I've kept my 5906 for home defense. I've tweeked it over the years, CT laser grip, short slide & barrel from a 3914, and 17 round flush mags

Too fat and heavy for carry, it's great at the range - and comforting on the nitestand.

That's a very nice, and I think pretty rare gun. I mentioned in another thread that the SCSW doesn't mention the CS9D or provide a SKU for them. I wondered over there if they were all factory conversions.

Since yours has "CS9D" stamped on the model number, it wouldn't seem to be a conversion.

The CS9 shares magazines with the pre rail 3913/53 TSW. PM me if you are interested in buying one as I have a spare.

I wasn't sure but I was starting to guess that after doing a little research. The CS9 in general doesn't seem to be readily available. I only saw one on Gunbroker. I couldn't find many references to the CS9D.

People don't tend to let go of their CS9's. I had one, but I only sold it because I bought a 3913TSW Pre rail which is a slightly better 3rd Gen. (IMHO)

I am very fond of my 3953 too. I briefly considered selling it to get the CS9D but I knew I'd regret it. The railed 3953 TSWs on Gunbroker have tempted me but my standard version has done well for me.

It took me about five years to find a 3953 in MA. I missed one just about a year ago when TTSH snagged it in front of me.

OTOH, I snagged a rail 3913TSW out from under him six months before that!

So, for now at least he and I are even.

I've test fired the 3953, but haven't added it to the carry rotation... yet. I need some more range time to get used to the DAO trigger.

As scarce as CS9s appear to be, especially the D variant, it's unlikely this one will get sold unless I truly HATE shooting it.

You just never know. Lightning struck me twice last year. As soon as I learned of the CS9D I started searching for one. Within a month I watched one bring stupid money on the auction site and accepted the fact that I probably wouldn't end up with one but a few weeks later I picked one up on the same site for a very reasonable price.

Then a month later a member here posted one up that he'd just picked up at Cabela's. I made a pretty big stink about what a great little gun it was and how I'd love to have a backup for mine,......and he offered it to me at his cost(nice guy, even if he does prefer revolvers). I'm no idiot,.....so I gratefully took him up on the offer.

I can highly recommend the KSG grips if you like wood.

Still prefer the 3953 by a fair margin but I won't be letting the Chiefs go any time soon.

Functionally I prefer Hogue but the KSG grips look very nice. I've considered them for my 3906 since Hogue rubber isn't available for it.

A small update:
I have shot this one a couple of times (about 50 rounds total) since I picked it up. I need to shoot it more to get comfortable enough to carry it. Its DAO trigger is HEAVY and much different than the HK P30SK LEM V1, Kahr K9, and Glock 42/43 that I regularly carry. I definitely prefer the DAO system of the 3953/5946/etc. but the CS9D is still a nice pistol. No malfunctions, though I wasn't expecting any.

I know that I'm tightening my grip as I pull the trigger and pulling the shots right. If I really concentrate I can avoid it. It will just take some practice. I might contact S&W to see if they offer any services for refining the trigger pull a bit. I sent them a 686 last year for their Combat Revolver Package that is just phenomenal.

Midway had factory CS9 mags on sale for $31 a few weeks ago too so I picked up a couple and some spare recoil springs.

For anyone interested, I did have S&W work on this CS9D and got it back this week. There is some more info in this thread.

In short, it's pretty sweet.

Nice score.
I owned a blue CS9 but sold it as I didn't like the safety/decocker on the slide. I would still own it if it had been a CS9D.
Just purchased a 4054.
And, of course, your photos are the best.

My CS9. Wife bought it for me last year. AE Nelson summer specal for Glock 23 fits perfect.
In my dottage three dot sights blur to one glob. I installed Ashley express large dot front sight. Works well. I carred a 459 for years and taught firearms during the big change to autos in the 80 s. Slide mounted decock lever is no problem.

Sounds good to me. I hope that you enjoy your new (to you) gun. I do not know why there was not more interest in these guns when they were being made. CS45, CS9
