Default S&W 5946 "New Old Stock" at Cabela's?

I saw this ad today for a new 5946 and was very surprised.

Are these NOS or is S&W making 3rd Gen autos again?

This is old stock. S&W doesn't make new 3rd gens.

Something a little funky with their ad. Ambi safety levers, on a DAO, 2.7" barrel and weighs 10 oz. wonder what else in their ad is incorrect.

I noticed the errors in the description as well. The photo doesn't look like any 5946 I've seen either.

The whole ad seems a little wonky. I wonder how many they actually have and where they got their listing information.

Also states that the pistol is hammerless. Who knows what knowledge, if any, the people who post their guns for them has.

The slide in the photo is stamped, "Caution - capable of firing with magazine removed". I'd guess that S&W did a special run for an agency (LE) and these are overruns.

Never paid attention to where the S# is. But the gun is a 5946 even if the S# is in the wrong place

The reason I mentioned the serial number, is because it looks odd (to me) to see it on the right side of this gun. None of my other S&W 2nd or 3rd gens have the number on the right side. It also appears to be an unusual font.

I am not even close to an expert and just learning about these myself, this is the basis for my questions.

I would also be curious to know the date of manufacture based on the serial number in the ad (UCY5377).

Thanks for the comments!

The recessed SN certainly looks newer than what my 3rd gens have.

Up until recently (maybe even currently) the RCMP used the 5946. I think there is another thread on that somewhere here. As I recall, they are phasing out the 5946 in favor of you know what.

I think that these and some of the 3953 NOS guns are spare stock that was in the vault for replacement purposes. People should snap them up because once they are gone it's likely that we won't see any new ones.

I have received reports that the new old stock gats have test fire brass in envelope marked
xx-xx-2014?. A re-check prior to shipping or a new overrun from a contract?

I'm going with put together from parts held in reserve for a contract. Oh, I forgot to mention that NYPD was a big user of the 5946. I can't vouch for this information at this link, but there are a couple of members who are very familiar with NYPD who might comment.

It's interesting that the 3953TSW was also authorized. I think some of those have shown up recently as well as some 3914DAOs.

I can report that as recently as first week of November, Cabela's near me had a NOS 5946 in the case, absolutely brand new fresh with not a mark on it. SN on right side of pistol, "Houlton, Maine" emblazoned on the left side of the slide (obviously not at all where 99.8% of all 1-2-3rd Gens were manufactured...) and a price tag that said, GULP, $799.

To be honest...
$799 is probably near where S&W would price them if they, like everyone constantly says & wishes, they would start up production again. And let's be honest... they aren't going to sell at that price.

Has to be from an LE contract, which S&W is still doing for 3rd gens.

You can get an idea of the time frame this gun was made by the date code on the Trijicon rear night sight, "14" for 2014.

Price has dropped to $599.99... if I wasn't in CA where it and it's 15 rd magazine can't be brought in, I'd be all over it at that price.

I don't own any of the 3rd gen S&W semi-autos. But there are several threads on them in these forums. What is the main appeal? I must admit, I'm kind of interested. I like the one being talked about here at Cabela's. $599 seems reasonable.

I'm also interested in a CZ 75, a Beretta 92 and a few other all steel guns. And I must say I love my "plastic" H&K P30 and I am also considering another "plastic", a Walther PPQ. Some day I would like an M&P too.

Strength, robustness and durability are all features of steel guns, and I assume that is the main draw for the S&W 3rd gens. But is there something else? Our local Cabela's shows they have these in stock for $599. I might just go pick one up.

Myself...
I can easily admit that I like them for nostalgia. I carry heartless, soulless Tupperware. I do not love the very few plastic guns I own, at least in the way that I totally fall in love with real metal handguns.

I think the S&W 1-2-3rd Gens are awesome handguns and I never (ever!) get tired of them -- but with that said, if someone is asking me how they compare with modern Tupperware for carry, duty or defense, I can't really argue for an old-tech DA/SA because I believe it is a somewhat more complicated system than modern striker fire.

When it comes to my absolute love and passion, I'm all about the discontinued S&W metal pistols. But they are not my first choice for EDC or home defense.

I agree about DA/SA, which is why the DAO's (5946, 3953, etc) are around.

I carried my 3953 before going to a Glock (G30) and carry it (3953) again now, as I find it far superior to my Glocks.

YMMV

You are correct we were big users of the 5946. I still have mine. And we could fire that last round with the Mag out, unlike other departments. For that reason alone, one could only purchase that version from a S& W L E distributor. Regular dealers were only given the version with the disconnect.

Not sure if the Mounties had the same version, but our neighbors in PAPD had evil version. Their legal folks were opposite the city on the liability issue. NYPD felt we would be at a disadvantage and the dept would be liable if we couldn't get that last round off. The Port Authoriy lawyers felt the opposite way.

I just talked to a guy at Cabela's in Hazelwood MO about transfering the 5946 to my FFL in Springfield MO and he asked me " you do know these are used guns?", police trade in's.
I told him I thought they were NOS, NOPE. Thanked him and wished him a Happy New Year.

EDIT: Just read the whole Cabela's ad..."Has been used by the FBI and several Police Dept's and ship's with 1 mag".
Their way of saying USED I guess.

Well... the people at Cabela's seemingly just don't plain know what they are talking about.

A guy on another forum bought just one and posted a pic... what he got was NIB, with 3 magazines.

That phrasing in the description is about who has used this particular model, not implying that is used.

Glad he got a good deal. I was just passing along what the guy in the gun department told me. I reread the ad, and it states 1 mag.
Does not say new or used. I'm not rolling the dice at that price.

Exclamation

My local Cabela's has (3) of them in stock. They all look NIB, and come with (3) mags, box, paperwork, etc. Price-$599.

I think that's a great price for a full size DAO stainless semi auto. I'd love to find a NOS single stack at that price.

The PPQ does feel quite nice in the hand, doesn't it? I've never fired one, but have handled several in stores. Most full sized pistols feel pretty clunky to me. The exceptions being the HK P30 which I have, and the Walther PPQ. Also, the HK VP9 feels good in hand too. I want one of the original PPQ's (now called "M1" variants) because of the mag release built into the trigger guard. Some people don't like that, but I've come to really love it in my HK.

Well I just bought one at my Cabela's and it looks brand new. It came with 3 15 round magazines and to my delight Trijcon night sites dated 14 on the rear and 13 on the front. The gun has no marks of any kind. It does not have restrike as my 469 once the trigger is pulled you need to pull the slide back to recock the hammer to half cock. This is the first DOA so I don't know if that is normal, the hammer is bobbed so you can't grab it and pull it back.

Question New 3rd Gens still being manufactured

You can get an idea of the time frame this gun was made by the date code on the Trijicon rear night sight, "14" for 2014.

Price has dropped to $599.99... if I wasn't in CA where it and it's 15 rd magazine can't be brought in, I'd be all over it at that price.
Thank you for posting this info, this is very interesting, as I occasionally read posts from some that say S&W is no longer making new 3rd gens. It seems from the info posted hear that S&W is in fact continuing to make new 3rd gen pistols for LE contracts. Further, from what I heard recently from someone at S&W, they typically always make more, extras, than what the initial contract number might be for, and those extra 3rd gens may find their way to distributors to be sold on the civilian market such as Cabellas, if this all sounds right, do not know for sure, just seems like this is what is happening based on all the pieces of information, which is good news, as I like the 3rd gens, and am glad to see they may still be manufactured from time to time, even if for special LE contracts.

I recall seeing other discussions in here about the limited special runs for NYPD of those models still authorized there, and they were being made in Houlton. I do not have first hand knowledge, or anything current about how often they do this.

If you go to Cabellas web site and click on "shop" then "shooting" then "Gun Library", there are a few different ways you can search the gin library inventories, by make and model of pistol, by store, etc.

The Cabellas I go to will transfer a pistol from another Cabellas store for the shipping fee. The one time I did that and ended up buying the pistol they deducted the shipping fee I paid from the price of the pistol as well as discounting the price a bit, so worked out well.

The pistols at Cabela's are brand new, they've been selling them since last spring or summer. The price is now $599. The Cabela's in Thornton, Colorado has them on the shelf. The Trijicon night sights are dated '14 on these pistols.

The one I purchased from Gander Mt. was in its used case the gun is really in new condition, came in a cardboard box numbered to the gun ,had its manual ,its lock & test fired casing in a sealed envelope dated 2014, 1-ten round mag , did talk with Smith & was told the pistol was a special run item for a police agency but did not know for what agency , so how Gander ended up with them is a mystery, mine was made in Houlton also in 2014. So its nice to know Smith still make a current 3rd Gen handgun, which means they must still carry parts . Hope this adds to this topic

Smile 3rd Gens Still Being Made

2014 is relatively recent, so it appears the consensus is that S&W is still manufacturing 3rd gens, as the requests come in from various agencies. This is great news. Now if some agency would only request some new 3914TSW and 3913TSW models so we can see some contract over run pistols on the civilian market, that would be even better

An alternate theory is that as LEO agency contracts expire and they transition to new firearms, S&W has some incomplete frames that they are building into saleable firearms.

There are very few departments that are buying new 3rd Gen guns. It's been mentioned before that S&W will only make new 3rd Gens if an agency insists and the alternative is losing the contract. WVSP and CHP come to mind.

The good news, is that they are going to have to provide warranty support for these guns going forward. Which means that some parts are likely to be available for the foreseeable future.

Yes, and from what I have heard, part of S&W warranty support is not only maintaining parts inventory, but some complete pistols as well, in case some have to be replaced under warranty.

To be honest...
$799 is probably near where S&W would price them if they, like everyone constantly says & wishes, they would start up production again. And let's be honest... they aren't going to sell at that price.
Honestly, that price wouldn't stop me from buying a new Third Gen. I see guys snapping up $1000 SIGs all the time, and I have a CZ SP01 that was $600+. Despite being a big CZ fan, I'd find another $100-$200 for a new S&W. I just wish these guns were anything other than standard 5946s - If I'm going to spend that kind of money I'd much rather have a DAO gun with a rail for nightstand use. If they were 5906s, I could live with the lack of rail since they're fine range guns.

Also, the Hamburg PA Cabelas had a new 5946 in the case for the same price ($799) when I visited in mid December. I wonder if its still there after Christmas.

Picked up a NOS 3953TSW a couple months back. Dated 2013 and serial number on right side, 3mags, brand new, test fire cartridge etc.

Did you order off line? I got one coming for $369.14. I'm hoping I didn't miss the train on this one. I guess I will find out on the 11th or 12th.

Does anyone know when the $599.00 price ends? The ad says one magazine but most people on here are reporting three included. My store according to the website does not have one but I can order one and have free shipping to the store. Do you know if you are locked in to buy if ordered? Thank You, Brian

You might be out the shipping but you don't have to accept any firearm you decide you don't want...

Went to Cabela's today...they had them, the one I looked at was marked Springfield, MA...it had three mags and Trijicon 2014 marked night sights and the guy at the counter said they are brand new (old stock)...and no one there gives them a second glance 'cuz they aren't plastic...

I did notice the frame markings are different than I am used to from Smith and appeared like the Maine pistols...

At the store I saw them at it was marked "clearance" and the counter guy did not know when the sale ended (it IS a clearance) and said he thought there were a few in the back and he could get me a new, boxed one from there if I wanted...

There are no 3rd Gen guns in the current S&W catalog, which I have reviewed thoroughly.

They must have picked up a ton of these! They seem to be spread all across the country. I just handled one in the new gun shelf - everything as described above. 14 sights, three mags, etc. Tag said $599 price is good until 1/18/17.

The trigger felt very nice for a DAO. The downside, unless you're already stocked, would be finding a sizable pile of factory mags.

Still thinking on it....a few days left...
