Default Correct spring for a CS45 4506 3913TSW

Is this the correct spring for a CS45:

Part # 263310000
What are the letter designations?: CS45C CS45D CS45S- as listed on Midway's site. I just need one for a blued CS45

Also, totally dumb question, but a spring listed for a 4506, I assume will also be the right one for a 4506-1/4506-2, etc.?

And finally, where does one get a spring for a 3913TSW?

The CS45C is the blue carbon steel frame CS45. The CS45D is the DAO variant and the CS45S is the stainless steel variant. They all use the same recoil spring.

Yes, a 4506 spring will work in all revisions of the 4506.

Any 39XX series recoil spring will work in a 3913TSW. For that matter so will any 69XX series spring. Because they all use the same recoil spring as well. Hope this helps. Regards 18DAI

spistols,

If you get a chance, can you post a photo of your 3913TSW. This is one of my favorite S&W and always like to see what is out there and if any variations. Thanks.

Need help guys...I ordered a new CS45 flat spring for my CS45. It was longer than the old one, and thinking, "OK, maybe the old one was compressed". Well, after installing my old one, I had a very hard time sliding back the slide and locking in place. It is as if the slide lock was about 1-2mm short of engaging the slide lock notch.

I put the old spring back in and not only does the slide lock engage, but I have maybe 3+ mm to go back even further.

In the new photo with the slide all the way open, it goes further but I could not keep it open long enough and take a photo. However, it doesn't lock back automatically or rather the slide lock does not engage.

Is my replacement spring too long and it is bottoming out?

All the 5 inch guns... 645, 745, 845, 4506, 1006 use the same standard weight spring being the 210610000 unless your using reduced power loads ie. wadcutters then the wadcutter spring 200710000 applies.

All the compact 9mm guns use the same recoil spring too, that being the 100950000 which is painted a sorta icky green color. Brownells has them.

CS45 flatwire spring... Same spring for all variants. Don't fret about the at rest or free length on the bench. What's important is the wire thickness x coil count. Of course I can't measure those springs from here but they both appear to be the same spring. Know that those flatwire springs will take a set once installed and broken in at the range losing about a half inch of free length. They do tend to be a bit disagreeable to install & cycle by hand when new but nothing to be concerned over. Jam the new spring in there, head to the range and treat it like a rental car. You don't have one of those shockbuff thingies in there do you?

Cheers
Bill

Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're saying (?), it sounds/looks to me that the slide IS bottoming out on the new spring, but not the old, right?

You don't want that.

I know Bill knows way more than I do (so one of us is misreading it) but this is something we've discussed before here (in one of his threads)
.
.
"Springs binding in my Shorty 45"

& I've had personal problems with it on several pistols, using different brand recoil springs. It has become the first thing I check when installing a new recoil spring in any of my 3rd Gens.

When you rack the slide fully rearward you should hear/feel the slide hit the frame stop, a distinct metal-metal sound/feel.

If the recoil spring is too long the sound will be a duller sound without the distinct metal contact either, as it's bottoming out on the spring's length, not the frame stop.

If in doubt, you can assemble the pistol without the recoil spring & guide rod and mark a reference point on the slide where it's fully rearward. Then install the new spring & see if the slide goes to that same point.

If it stops before, the spring is too long. Either get a different spring or cut 1/2 a turn off the spring, at a time, until it bottoms out on the frame. I wouldn't take more than 1-1/2 turns off & still use it unless it was heavier than needed originally.

BMCM...the spring number on the bag (came from Midway) is 41405 111816.

BlueDot37...yes, this is the exact problem as you described. With the new spring, which happens to be green and the same amount of coils as the old spring. The slide does not go as far back as with the old spring, and with no spring.

Did I get a spring with thicker coils? It was supposed to be a bone stock original spring rate.

I'm not sure what you have. That number is not for a recoil spring from Midway. That spring is the one in the picture above? A green flat wire spring? What brand?

I recently ordered a S&W 3913/3914 recoil spring from Midway. It's a green round wire spring marked 349212 which equates to S&W# 100950000.

The "new" pictured spring does not look green. You could use a caliper/mic to compare the wire thicknesses but if you think it's the right spring, & want to use it, you could remove 1/2 turn with a cut-off wheel & see if it helps. Or just order the number Bill & I gave you. Dunno beyond that.

Spoke to bmcm at length. I am using the above spring, but have yet to go to the range to confirm yet due to work. Once done, I will report back.

A picture with my rail and no rail 3913TSWs. The railed one is on my hip as we speak. The no rail is for days when the one round shorter grip makes it easier to conceal.

Enjoy!

Seems your issue is revolved but I think it was Bad-Man-1 or BMCM that had a really great dissertation on how to determine the space for the recoil spring. I seem to remember it was counting the coils, measure the coil thickness and multiply those two together to get a compressed spring length. Then measure the flange on the guide rod and the length of the area on the slide in the retracted position. Subtract the guide rod flange thickness from the length of the retracted slide and that is how much you have for a spring. If the spring is longer than the space it isn't going to work or will (?) damage something. Now don't hold me to this exactly but I'm sure you get the idea. Maybe another member can elaborate on it better than I remember.
Take Care

I already posted that link in post #8.

You really only need to go thru all those calcuation if you're trying to install a spring that wasn't originally made for your gun or are searching for an other option, not one that is made for your pistol.

Thank You for the photos GaryS, those look very nice. Not certain what it is about them beyond the ergonomics work perfect for me, but the 3913TSW and 3914TSW are my favorite single stack 3rd gens.

Good concealability, reliable as the sun coming up in the east, accurate, look good, NO polymer. Those are the things I like. The big downside it that it can be hard to find magazines and holsters. Especially the latter for the rail TSWs.

Hopefully the report that Apex will be making some parts for them is true. It would be nice if Mec-Gar would produce magazines.

I had not heard that about Apex, that is good news, especially since I read that they recently relocated here to the greater Phoenix area and on my list of places to visit.
