Won this beautiful piece of American made metal on a Gunbroker auction last night for $631.00. Since the dealer lives like 18 miles from me I will pick it up tomorrow afternoon. Would love to get my hands on it today but my schedule won't let me. This gun is part of an estate sale and appears unfired. As new in the factory SW box with all factory paperwork and 2 mags. Going to love having this dude as part of my SW family.

Fantastic! Post some photos of the pistol with box and such. It should have a standard mag and one with a rubber base. Mine was in the box when I got it back in 2009; the rubber base was still wrapped in S&W factory paper. Very cool.

These pistols are well known for feeding empty brass.

It looks like your pistol was made in late 1986. Mine was made in early 1988. Mine has adjustable sights so the product code is a little different than yours, mine's 103719. It looks like it has the one magazine with the rubber affixed to the base plate, at least from the first photo of it sitting in the box. Again, fantastic.

Saw a video on these dudes feeding empty brass this morning.

I have a M645 serial number TAN80XX which I believe dates to late 1986 to early 1987. It was the first gun I purchased wholesale when I got my FFL and it came with two magazines with the metal floorplates. I don't believe that the magazines with the polymer floorplates appeared until the 4506 went into production or shortly before. My two M745s also came with the early magazines with metal floorplates.

We carried this pistol after my Sheriff's Office changed from .357 revolvers, to semi-auto pistols. I have two magazines with orange followers and rubber bases. I forgot which pistol they went with, so am grateful for the info. I sold my 645 years ago and have the 4506 I was issued given to me upon retirement. The 645 is still a great pistol, hope you enjoy it. Contact me if you need two extra magazines.

I was a "Stocking Dealer" for Smith & Wesson in the 1980s, so could order a "Dealer Sample" when new models were introduced. I did that with the Model 645 when it was introduced, and still have it.

I note mention of magazines with rubber bases. Both of the magazines that came with my early Model 645 have steel bases. I was not aware that later Model 645 pistols were shipped with one magazine with a rubber base.

I have several later Model 4506 magazines with the polymer base and various colors of followers that I use with the Model 645 and various Models 4506, but I have never seen a Model 645 magazine with a rubber base. Is the base on such magazines really rubber, or is it actually polymer?

Great pistol. Still have mine and shoot it now and then. I'd be a lier if I said it had nothing to do with Miami Vice. Never had a malfunction. Somewhere I got some checkered rosewood grips for it and they look so much better than the black plastic. Enjoy your pistol!

That is a real beauty. You won't be disappointed. Shoot it and enjoy it.

+1. I replaced the black rubber grips with wooden one and the wooden grips make it look a whole lot better.

The two magazines I have, with orange followers, sure feels like rubber to me, and it protrudes a bit more than the polymer base.

I Bought two new in box, one in 1986 and the other a few years later. both new, Came with metal plate base magazines.one is under 2,000 Serial the other 8,000 Both still new in box. with paperwork and two mags each. And Extra set of wood grips for one.Over the past 30 years have thought maybe should sell one OR both.. Nope they still sit in the safe in the boxes.As new as the day I bought them.looked at the tags. $415.00 and $425.00. That today seems not so much back in 86 it was. Over the decades had probably well over a 100 S&W'S in all cal. from autos to custom shop to 44 mag's 41's and 45 acp's I miss them all. So glad I still kept these two.

We all go through a ton of guns in life. And some for whatever reason we keep. I guess it was a Cold grey snowing winter day in Wheaton ,IL.At the Pioneer valley gun show. That started me on that road. And my first Mod19 I bought in the Marines.
along with a 1950 model 45acp.

There is one small scratch that I would love to have polished out of this otherwise flawless gun. Does anyone know if S&W does this kind of work on their older guns?

I don't know if S&W would do it, but this video might help you out. I have used sloth bright pads from the grocery store to remove light scratches and light surface rust from stainless pistols.

I used this method on a stainless Ruger 10/22 but could always see a difference in the finish of the metal.

FWIW, here are my thoughts on "messing" with the 645 factory finish.

1. It's a pistol not a piece of jewelry;
2. I would not trust the current S&W folks to do it. I'm not saying they might not do a nice job, but remember this pistol was made 31 years ago, it's a different S&W;
3. I do a lot of things on my S&W pistols, but I would have not messed with my 645's finish even though it has a very, very minor scratch on the finish . . . and I'm picky about that stuff. Frankly, the folks who have seen it don't even notice;
4. Don't mess with it; and,
5. Don't mess with it.

That one scratch gives it "character" so leave it alone. Trying to "fix it" will result in a gun which you won't be happy with. If ain't broke, don't fix it!!!!

I have been very successful removing light scratches on stainless guns. By using the right grit ScotchBrite pad and VERY careful attention to keeping the strokes parallel and even, a light scratch can be removed without a trace to the naked eye. (Very high magnification might detect a difference in texture that cannot be seen by the naked eye.)

Any refinish will surely destroy the original look of the finish.

Well, just call me old fashion . . . or just old, but I like my 645 just the way it came from the factory. I real beauty.

One there now w/3 mags (1/24/2016) and bidding is at $631.01!!!

I had a mint 645, and sold it about two years ago, to a friend for around $300.00. I couldn't get used to the trigger in DA mode, as it was long, and heavy, when compared to my SIG's, and HK's. But it sure looked nice!

Here are my "twins" sporting their wooden grips. The wood just looks so much better than the black rubber!

I agree!! My walnut grips arrived but I am out of town. Hope to get them swapped out soon.

Had to jump in. I just started a thread asking about pricing o this same gun, same product code. It also has the box,tools, all of it. Not in as good a shape as yours, but not bad. Were there not a lot of these made? According to the Bible, they were made from 1985-88. Also, do they take 1911 mags? The mag with this one looks like a 1911 mag. Thanks

I think that you are correct, manufactured from late 1984 up to 1988. Mine is a 1986 model. They will not accept 1911's magazines unless there are some mags that I am unaware of.
