Smith 39 magazines?
Howdy
Picked up a nice Model 39 "no Dash" yesterday.
Any chance there is a source for Smith factory magazines with flat metal base and metal followers other than Ebay?
Many thanks in advance, Bo in NC

Check out Numrich or gunpartscorp.com. They make exact replacements with the metal followers.

If you are looking for "period correct" items that match the neat pistol you just got, I absolutely understand and as a matter of fact... I did exactly the same thing many months back to go with my 1964ish five digit SN Model 39 no-dash also. In my case, I simply swapped some items with a buddy, he had gotten them in a Gunbroker auction.
However, it seems worth noting that -all- of the 39 magazines (metal floorplate and plastic follower) and also the larger capacity 9-rd 3906/952 magazines will also fit, feed and function perfectly well in even a no-dash Model 39. These magazines are easily available in many places and definitely on Gunbroker.

Ebay is the best source for original factory 8 round mags with the S&W 9mm marked metal base plates.
The ones with metal followers are a bit more elusive than those with black plastic followers.
I've purchased 7 original 8rd mags off ebay in the $20~$30 range in like new condition to ones with some worn off bluing.Three had metal followers. They all work well in my 39-2.
I have only one original factory Model 59 14rd mag with a metal follower.

Hi Guys and y'all are the greatest.
I just checked Brownells and Midway. Both are shown as "9-round" magazines. Am I wrong, or will this magazine hang out below the bottom of the magazine well? If so, I will have to go another route.
I saw the ones on the forum but it is a 38-mile-round-trip for me to get a money order at the closest PO. I prefer to pay via check or charge card for most things
THANKS so much !!! "Bo"

2nd reply: I found those magazines on Numrich at $35 each apparently manufactured for or by "GPC" company (Numrich).
Do any of you have any experience with these? I think I had rather have a good reproduction than pay some of the prices I see on Ebay for originals with figure 8 follower and flat base.
Over the years, I have had 439's, 639's, 59's and recently acquired 2 5906's. (I really regret selling a 99% 639 4 years ago to help raise funds for a new house )
I have never had a nice 39 and got this one "right." My close friend has had one for years and I love shooting it in spite of my being a "died-in-the-wool" Smith wheel gun collector.
So, when I saw this one was "NO DASH" and observed PATS PENDING on the slide, I knew I had an old one in my hand.
Serial is: 6511x. What year would this be?
Thanks again, y'all !!!! Bo

39xx mags will stick out about 1/4" beyond the bottom of the grip. They are also 9 rounds vs 8. I have one that works fine in my 439, which is a generation newer than your 39, but uses the same mags.

The ones from Numrich/Gun Parts Corp (same company) are good to go.
I have a M39-2 and when I set the original factory mag with metal "X" follower next to the Numrich/GPC one, except for missing the S&W on the floor plate, it is dead bang identical. They really did an excellent job reproducing them.
Functioning has been flawless, I retired the factory mags to preserve them, and bought more of the Numrich ones.

I have one of the Numrich mags and the fit/finish is like an original mag. It just doesn't have "S&W" on the floor plate. It functions just fine.

The 3906/952 work perfectly well and do look slightly odd but it isn't radical like a long hi-cap stick mag hanging out of a pistol.
Now I did not know that Numrich made reproduction magazines. If that is something in their arsenal, it seems horribly obvious that they need to tool-up for reproduction Model 52 magazines. That would be a GOLDMINE.

Like NevadaBob, I've had one of these and it performed flawlessly.
