Serial number search
I've recently picked up a couple of S&Ws from the local pawn shop (a 1911 and a model 629) and can't find much info on the serial and model numbers. Can anyone point me in the right direction please.

I just got my SCSW 4th edition in the mail today and I'd be glad to help. You can also download the 3rd edition from Kindle for free.

You will have to post the serial#'s or else buy a copy of the Standard Catalog of S&W. The 4th Edition is the latest.

You can also call the S&W customer service and they will be glad to help you.

It sounds as though you have the box, right below the sku# 108282 you should see 4 numbers in a smaller font. that is the manufacture date. Using a Julian Date calendar
I'll guess the first is either a 9 or 0 making it 2009 or 2010. The last 3 are the day of that year.
Mine is the 49th day of 2010

If I'm reading it correctly, it only gives a vague range for auto pistols prior to 1970. By extrapolation, (assuming their monthly production remained at a steady pace) I would say it is late 1957, but I could be way off. I guess you may have to call S&W to find out for sure. It would be interesting to see how close my wild a** guess is. I am by no means any sort of an expert on S&W, just an enthusiastic aficionado. There are many actual experts on here and they probably have access to more complete information. Here is the text from SCSW:

I wanted to bump this thread up because I want to find out from some experts as to how close I was on the ship date of the model 46. It's my first time helping someone with manufacture date after I got my SCSW 4 th ed. I wasn't sure if I was reading it right or if there was another section that gave a more precise date. Thanks

My best quesstimate, without the book, I'd say somewhere around 1960 give or take a lie.....,er, I mean,, YEAR or two.
All kidding aside, somewhere in there 1959-1960 is my best guess but with S&W you never know. You can have a lower SN that shipped much later than one with a higher number. Why ? Who knows !
The Automatic Serial number range started in 1954 with SN 1001. This includes the pre-39s, 39s, 41s, 46s, and all that followed.
The original production / sales of the automatic series took off slowly.
Somewhere around SN 109xxx, started the A-prefix. I own a 39-2 SN 109000 (no A prefix), yet I've owned 2, 39s (no dash) 109474+109475 and 1099xx that were 39s in all correct features, while other 39-2s have also been recorded in the A109xxx range too.
The same serial number range continued, just had the "A" prefix.
