Default Price check on NIB 5946

Hey guys, looking to get a full size semi auto and noticed a brand new 5946 on clearance at my local cabelas for 599. Just wondering if this is a decent price as I haven't seen many new in box in recent years. Thanks in advance for the info.

Grab it. Quite a few folks here have.
And like a few others I got a PD trade in 5906 from Gander Mtn.
for 350 + shipping and tax.
Either way you can't lose in my opinion.

Probably the biggest concern I have came from reading around a bunch of 3rd gen posts here and it seems like the ones made in Maine might be of lesser quality. You know if there's much truth to that?

Thumbs up

I have a 3914TSW that was manufactured at the Houlton facility in 2009 and the workmanship and performance is very much comparable to that of my 3913TSW made in Springfield in 2000.

Forgot to say welcome, Welcome.
If your worried (and I don't see a reason to be) about build quality, grab a used one from Gander for almost 1/2 the cost. They only come with 1 mag and Mec Gar makes great ones for Smiths.

Thanks for the warm welcome, I'm not really worried I was more curious if anyone had heard about that before. I'm just starting to learn about the 3rd gens after I came across it in the store and am quickly falling in love with them. Not a bad idea about grabbing a used one either way, although I would be very careful to maintain the nice finish if I bought the new one.

I'm on the fence on the same gun at Cabala's as well. Sale ends tomorrow but I can't see to many people paying $799.00 regular price for them?

I like my 3rd gen autos a lot, including my 5946s but I don't think I'd pay $600 for a 5946, even new. You have a lot of options in that price range or a bit more. I got both of these used with 7 factory mags between them for just a little more than $600 last year. I would find a good used one.

Must admit that I'm not a big fan of the Model 5946. I am, on the other hand, a very big fan of the Models 5906 & 5943... go figure!

However, these brand new Houlton pistols represent a rare and interesting opportunity for us 3rd Gen lovers to own a brand spanking new S&W all-metal 9mm pistol once again. For me, it would be a first. And $599 certainly doesn't seem too far out-of-line for that near-unique opportunity.

Too bad for me that Cabela's would never allow one to be sold out of their Massachusetts store or even allow one to be transferred into Massachusetts (to any MA FFL) from a free state store. So it's kind of a moot point for moi.

So in a way, it's comforting to me that it isn't a 3rd Gen model at the top of my long-term 3rd Gen Want List. Thank God it wasn't a brand spanking new Model 5903TSW or I'd be ready to move immediately to a free state!

I got the round trigger guard on the classifieds here. I think it was $350 shipped. The square guard was on GunBroker with five mags for $325 shipped.

Beautiful 5946's you have but how many hours did it take you to get them in the condition of your pics?
I mean they are cherry. I'm sure the one you bought here was in VGC, but GB? I've seen nothing but dogs for less than $450. Plus shipping.

Actually the one here was worse. It had a ding on the front of the slide and recoil guide rod and it has had some sort of matte grey finish applied. I was pretty angry because the seller didn't disclose any of this and didn't respond when I brought it up. I thought I was getting one with the silver hammer/trigger but they were just painted and are actually the black MIM parts. However, it is a very good shooter, better than the square trigger guard pistol.

The one from GunBroker is pretty nice. I'm fairly certain it's an NYPD trade-in. The seller was in NY and had others. For some reason it just doesn't group as well as the one with MIM parts. Aesthetically, I prefer the square guard and hard chrome hammer/trigger this one has.

I haven't done anything to either but shoot and clean them except put Hogue grips on the square trigger guard pistol.

I just looked at GunBroker. I didn't realize how these had dried up.

Default 5946 ~ unissued police gun?

I found a Houlton made 5946 in what appears to me new unfired condition. The night sights are dated 2014 and I wondered if that was the manufacture date as well.

The slide is marked with the no mag disconnect warning and the serial number, UCW3735 is stamped in very nicely with bold numbers in a manner I have not seen before.

I was told that the Memphis Police were 3g holdouts wonder if this weapon was ordered my them and then not issued.

It was also tagged a$599 but may be some wiggle room on that price.

Any help with date of mfg or linage would be appreciated.

Default Brand New 5946 at Cabella's

I closed the deal on the new 5946 for $550. It has the factory fired casing in a sealed envelope dated 2014 as well as a total of 3 15 rd magazines. The night sights are also marked 2014.

It is marked as a Houlton, Maine assembled firearm and in my opinion makes it unique as one of the last manufactured 3rd generation semi-autos made.

An opportunity to buy a brand new, fired once at the factory, 3rd generation Smith & Wesson could not be passed up. I now have the first issue no dash model 59 in excellent condition and adding the last of the "wonder nines" to my collection is a welcome addition.

From the Cabella's web site they have this comment about the new issue 5946's:

"Smith and Wesson kept a large number of these in back stock for the NYPD and other departments still purchasing this firearm even after the machinery broke and they discontinued them to the public. In 2014 the NYPD decided to stop purchasing this firearm from S&W. As they were the last department to be purchasing the 5946 Smith and Wesson sold their entire back stock to Cabelas. They are the 3rd generation, no manual safety, double action only, no magazine disconnect, night sights, and come with 3 magazines."

They list them now for $799 and I don't think that is a bad price for a new manufacture 5946. I'm glad I got mine for less but would have paid the $799 asking price.

I doubt that I will fire the new 5946 so it will be my first safe queen.

Not Memphis, MPD started transitioning to Sig P229 2005ish and had switched from 9mm to 40 1996ish. Also MPD Used the magazine disconnect. They requested it from Sig as well. And just recently dropped the magazine safety from the Sig due to problems with it.

I think the rumor was NYPD And a Canadian Agency were the last hold outs.

Not a new manufacture but a couple years ago a guy walked a gun show with a NIB never fired 5946. He had bought it and put it up and according to him "never needed it" Every dealer low balled him bad $200-250 saying police trades killed the value. He wanted a scope for his sons rifle. The scope he wanted was $300. I gave him $300 he bought the scope.

I have a 3914 DAO from the NYPD so if the 3946 is from the NYPD I am pleased. To own a brand new S&W 3G is something I never thought would be possible.

I've owned a 5906 for about 25 years, bought at a swap meet for $275. I never liked it that much, too heavy for all day carry and I despised the hooded rear sight.

Recently swapped the slide out off a compact model and created my own DIY SSV:

Still heavy, but nice for the bedside, especially with the CT laser.

For carry I like DAO and if I need more than 9 rounds onboard I'll go with my 6946:

Also takes the 59xx 15 round magazines although I like the MetGar 17 round mags.

If I feel the need for more firepower I'll go with my 915, a great high capacity carry gun.

NYPD, RCMP, WV State Police, CHP and a few other CA agencies were still using 3rd Gens. NYPD is phasing them out, I don't know about the others.

LAPD was allowing officers who had them keep their 3rd Gens. At least that was the last info I heard.

Default Brand New 5946 in hand ...

But it didn't take me long to swap slides with my 6946 to make two hybrid hi-cap's ~ an SSV in all stainless and a long slide 6946.
