Default 3rd Gen Newbie

I just discovered that these pistols existed a short while ago when I started getting into handguns in the first place. I am not at all familiar with the bewildering number of models produced, but the ones I have seen look fantastic, and it is disappointing S&W are no longer making them. For concealed carry, the DAO and DA/SA single stack pistols are very appealing. Do these pistols have a long lifespan in terms of the ability to get parts, have them repaired, etc, or are they slowly becoming museum pieces? Any gun I buy will be carried and shot.

Here's a non-comprehensive list of these fine pistols. With proper maintenance and care, the lifespan of these guns will outlast our own.

Best thing I like concerning the Third Generations is that they "look" like a handgun should. Nice ergonomics and metal! Super fan of the CS and Tactical series myself. Am sure they would be costly if still made but bet they would be a great seller.

Yeah, me too. I could easily see a CS9 becoming my EDC, and one of the full size variants being a range and competition gun.

Don't look at it as a problem.... it is a new opportunity!

I like the single stack 3rd gens. Worry about fixing them "if" you break one.

I have bought parts in anticipation only to sell the gun much later, along with the parts.

Congratulations on your new hobby haha. As mauser9 wrote, they look like a handgun should. Not only that they are built like tanks. At least the all stainless steel models. I've also heard the alloy frame models, (I have 2), are very stout.

Yup. I've had a 908 since 1999. It's a very safe, no-nonsense compact 9mm. I wouldn't mind a 3954 as a companion to it...

This thread needs more pics...I'm a compact fan!

So many models. I have only one real duplicate here and these are all 9mm's with the exception of one .40. This only scratches the surface. You can start anywhere you want but no telling where it will lead.

I have a 6906 and am finding magazines more expensive and harder to get. I just bought 2, bringing my total to 6, and they had chewed up followers, rusted mag springs and rusted mag floor plate catches. Luckily, those parts were readily available and easy to get.

I was like you not too long ago...beware, they're made in many different varieties!

They are getting harder to find parts for but the good thing is that if you get one that has had little use, & some TLC, it'll likely not need anything beyond springs, which are available from several sources.

General maintenance is easily done & there are several videos detailing full disassemble, if you're so inclined.

They're strong guns that have a reputation for reliable functioning & durability.

.

4586 not pictured ( it seems I'm alway shooting it instead of photographing it )

Whenever I go to a gun show and can find 3rd gen mags I buy them up when they are below what you would pay online. I have a nice stockpile built up.

As mentioned, they look like guns should look and feel like solid guns should feel. Also, they shoot great and will outlast me. I love the clean lines of the DAO and the compact frames.
