First S&W... Info?
Hi everyone, new to the forum, and new to Smith & Wesson. Had a guy offer to trade a 3953 for a rifle I was trying to get rid of. Really nice gun, but I had not heard much about this model. Anything I should know?
Also, I know these were made in the 90's, but can anyone tell me what year? Serial # is TJB1xxx

Nice pistol. There's a lot to like with the 3rd generation single stacks.

Nice pistol. I am thinking of expanding my collection from pre-1982 S&W revolvers to the pre "wonder nine" S&W pistols. Those 2nd/3rd generation - non polymer ones. Any recommendations on which ones are the best and at reasonable price to start? Gun show coming up this weekend.

The only way to be sure of when your 3953 was made is to call S&W customer service and ask them. I would make an educated guess that it is late 2000 or early 2001. My CS45 with VJD prefix is October of 2001.
VaTom, a 915, any 39XX series gun or a CS9 would be a very good start for a 9mm 3rd gen collection. Regards 18DAI

Finally got to take it out to the range and put a box of ammo through it after a thorough cleaning.
The DAO trigger action is quite a bit different than my Glock, but I still found myself shooting very well and hitting the targets where I wanted to. Like any new pistol, it took a bit of time, but I really do like the gun. VERY little felt recoil, and the action is very smooth.
The one thing that I'm not crazy about is the sights on it. Maybe they're just old, but I'm wondering about upgrading them. Anyone have suggestions in that department?

Pictures of the existing sights would help, as would a description of what it is about them that you don't like.

Great start, nice 3rd Gen. I have a 3906 which is one of my favorites. Single stacks fit my small hands near perfectly. Enjoy.

they appear in the photo of his first post to be the standard S&W Novak's...nice sights...I think your choices may be limited to the same or night sighted versions from Trijicon.
Enjoy your pistol

Well, I guess I would say that I do not like the dot configuration. Not enough differentiation between the front and back. Sure, I could just change the color of the front sight, but I was wondering if there was a set of night sights or a fiber optic sight out there that would work.
