Default Serial ID questions. Model 39 or 39-2

I had this problem with identifying make of year and such.
tried looking it up, but unlike most, I don't have any lettering, unlike all examples I've seen and read.
It's just a 6 digit number.
Underneath it reads; MODEL-39.

Is this common?

Sorry if I'm being such a "noob" here. And I'm not asking for help identifying it, I'm just wondering about the odd serial now. Previous owner couldn't help with my question.

Everything from memory here... I could be SO OFF on this, but I believe prior to 1970 you wouldn't have the "A" or related lettering present. However, it would be CLOSE to 1970... maybe '68 or '69. The 39-2 came out around 1971.

We'll need someone with more reference materials (and experience).

Good luck!

Hello Casa, interesting question. You made me consult my note book.
I have three (3) Mod 39s with six digit Sns. Shipped between July/Aug
1969. These transitional 39s are not commonly encountered. Pls. PM me with your Sn. for my data. Best

Without a serial number this is like getting a haircut over the phone. The first 9MM pistols had no model designation. Then they became the Model 39, later the Model 39-2. During the transitions the dashes between "Model" and "39" and between the "39" and the "2" are kind of random. Also, most Model 39-2 pistols will have an "A" prefix to the serial number but the numbers and actual features of the pistols overlap a bit. You may have an interesting variation but we need pictures and a number to be much help.
