Why are 39s and 52s ?
Why are they ignored? It just seems the 2nd and 3rd gens are dominating the scene. I guess the new stuff is the cats meow.
Im just old and neglected. Best

39-2s are great nothing feels better in the hand......... but for concealed carry a 3rd Gen 3913/14/NL is a 39 cut down to an ASP at 1/6th the price!!!!
Haven't seen a nice 59 for sale in .............................................years.
To me 2nd Gen guns feel like I'm holding a 2X4

Mod 59s? Talk about a brick. Carry gun, Mod 38 or 42. 39s are quite comfy
to carry. Just talkin. Best.

I bought a beautiful 39-2 in nickel a couple of years back that was as new.
Went to the range and found that for me, and what i am used to that the trigger pull was really off putting. I gave it two more range sessions and just could not get comfortable.Wish i would have liked it as a 52 would have been next.
Sure did feel nice in my hand though.

I think that we have MANY fantastic models that don't get their due discussion in the pages. One example that seems obvious to me is the extremely cool 745. Yes, it is not a PC gun and it is not built as tightly as a Model 52 or 41, but these pistols are just no slouch.
I'll also say that I just love the look -- the matte stainless frame and the dark blued slide, they contrast and look great together. I love the single sided hammer block only safety, no decocker (I wish every Smith & Wesson 1-2-3rd Gen was the same exact way!)
And please feel free to call me crazy -- I believe the 745 looks better with either the black plastic or actually the aftermarket Pachmayr than it does with the wood stocks. The wood stocks are nice in feel, but it makes for three dominant colors when I believe two is the right number.
745's are COOL!

Funny....5 years ago people couldn't give 39-2's away. They were going in the 2-3 hundred range. Then a couple of years ago they got rediscovered and are now going in the 5-9 hundred range!!
paplinker...the model 52 internals (trigger) are nothing like the trigger on the 39-2. The pistols LOOK alike but are not. The 52 is a great target pistol - I don't own one because they only shoot .38 Special Wadcutter ammo.

Curious note on Model 52's...
The no-dash pistols seem to (most often!) have the standard, modern ampersand on the slide between Smith and Wesson.
The later Model 52-1 shows, by far, more occurrences of the old-school "lazy ampersand."
I make this assumption on where I see these pistols the most -- the big auction site that we aren't allowed to name. Always more 52's there then on any one place in the world that I know of.
If the lazy ampersand is the "old" style, why does it seem so much more prevalent on a later produced pistol?

Hello Sevens, great observation. My period 1969 Mod-52s are lazy as are my period 39s. I will keep my peepers open on this one. Best.

I saw a guy open carrying a Mod 39 yesterday at WalMart. He was behind me in the checkout line. When I ask "is that a Model 39?" he couldn't believe I knew what it was. He said "I can't believe you know that, everybody thinks it's a 1911".

Why are 39s and 52s ?
I'm actively looking now for a 52-2! Finally decided it was time to join the club. I'm looking forward to reloading for it. In fact, my components arrived in the mail last week so I'm ready to start rolling.
No 39's at the moment, had one though. I'll admit, I currently only have 3rd Gens, stuff from the 80's and 90's appeals to me for my Smiths.

Hello Fats, 52-2s are becoming popular. When you get the right load, it will out shoot you. Just load and charge from the magazine. There are a few on some auction sights. Best

I am a 3rd Gen kinda guy but I do have a 39-2 and absolutely love it. Feels perfect in the paw and the trigger pull is better than any of my 3rd Gens, even my two Shorty-Fortys. The only thing I wish is it was made in .40S&W

My most favorite the 39-2 and mod 52, along with the 952-1, in my opinion you have the best.

My 39-2's are very hard to beat in SA but for me the DA pull is not as good as 3rd gens. JMHO.

Could not agree more. I have two that have the adjustable Millet sights and they are tack drivers. Dave_n
