Default Having problems with my SW model 41 .

Hello guys,
I'm having a problem with my 41 where sometimes it won't fire after loading it. It acts like the magazine is not in the gun. I sent it to Smith & Wesson once before for the problem and it was good for awhile but now it happened again. I cleaned it up but haven't i don't think that was the problem.Should i try Clark custom guns to fix the problem or try Smith & Wesson again?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Need a little more detail- does this happen with just one magazine, is the magazine fully loaded? Define "cleaned it up.

Have you removed your top end and viewed the magazine seating in the frame?

It happens with different mags. Mags were only loaded with 5 rounds. The Magazine looks fine from the top. i cleaned what i could without taking apart the trigger assembly and I haven't gotten a chance yet to see if cleaning it helped, range was closed tonight.

Take off the RH grip.

Observe the action of the trigger bar etc as the magazine (loaded) is inserted fully.
You should see the trigger bar rise up a couple of mm and engage the tab on the sear.

If this doesn't happen, look closely and find out why .

These are very simple machines........ remember that.

Just to be sure, you did check and make sure your safety is fully latched into the "fire" position? They can be stiff and stop partway on or off.

I suggest pulling both side grips and look for a crud buildup around the safety switch area. Make sure you also oil the safety slide as well with one drop of good oil as well.

IF YOU DECIDE TO SEND IT IN. I HATE TO SAY THIS, BUT I WOULDN'T SEND IT BACK TO S&W. ALL THE GUYS WHO REALLY KNEW EVERY DETAIL OF THE MODEL 41'S AND MODEL 52'S ARE RETIRED. THE EXPERIENCE IS JUST THERE ANYMORE. SAME WITH CLARK. I'D SEND IT TO ALEX HAMILTON 10 RING PRECISION IN SAN ANTONIO OR K.C. CRAWFORD IN SC. JP

Send it to Clark Custom Guns.
You will be happier than a clam at high tide !
Have them do a trigger job and reliability package.
After they did mine and mounted a Red Dot sight, a trip to the range puts a smile on my face and a song in my heart ...they do magical things to a 22 !
They even tune your magazines !

Just updating status of my model 41 troubles. I sent it to a gunsmith to check it out. I'm waiting for his diagnosis and recommendation for repairs.

Default smith and wesson quality control failures

Last summer I bought a new 929. The bore rifling was defective. My dealer returned the 929 to Smith. Smith installed a new barrel. Last month I bought a new Model 41 7 inch. The bore rifling was defective. My dealer sent the Model 41 back to Smith. The model 41 has not returned yet. Yesterday I bought a Performance Center Model 41. I returned the gun today due to a defective bore. My dealer gave me my money back and the dealer is sending the PC model 41 back to smith.
It is quite obvious quality control has taken a back seat at Smith and Wesson.
IMHO. One may consider bringing a bore snake and a bore light with when purchasing a Smith and Wesson handgun.

Default 41 repairs

You will hear good and bad things about practically everything man made. I have a decent collection of S&W 41's and if I have an issue with one either Clark Custom or KC Crawford will make the repairs. S&W customer service may be warranted but not for this Cowboy. Burn me twice--- shame on me. "Good judgement comes from experience, experience comes from poor judgement " (unknown author)

Any update from the OP regarding his issue ?

What did the "gunsmith" do / find / repair ?

Is the M41 now running sweet or did Gmcrigger move it on ?

We are starting to have some horror stories here in Canada on wwarranty work as well. Ont is a extremely large province and we only have one repair shop with very limited repair experience at this time. A friend of mine drove 4 hours round trip to get the front sight on his new Victory re-installed after it jumped off from vibration alone. They told him to loctite it back on. That is Not a proper repair at all.
