Default M 41 Safety

Anyone know of larger and easier to engage safety than the factory issue safety?...Appreciate the feedback. Lou

Sorry Lou, I've never seen a larger safety for the Model 41. I checked Brownells and a few other parts places with no positive results. Good luck in your search.

Never heard of one being made either but maybe others may have knowledge of a larger saftey button or switch.

Buff,

I have had my 41 for about 12-13 years, shooting a few leagues, I see a number of other guys with their 41's customized in various ways, but none ever had a different safety than factory stock.

I don't use mine, and most guys I see don't either. We shoot Bulls Eye, starting with an empty pistol, load on command, coming to a ready position, etc.

I agree that most of us never even use them at all. I keep mine oiled but maybe once in 6 months turn it on and off.

Default M 41 Safety

Appreciate all the feedback. Saw the need when instructing my wife and two of her friends when they had questions with rounds still in the mag. They found it difficult to engage, which it is. Again, thanks for the response......Lou

I am asking EWK arms to start making them. He has said he is considering it. Perhaps if more folks requested it he might get started.

I also compete in Bullseye competitions and never use the safety. I do cycle mine after cleaning to make sure it still moves as I would hate to fail an inspection for it not working. The safety has always been very stiff and hard to move.

I used to take my 41 hunting. Yes, the safety is small and stiff. No factory or aftermarket alternatives. I just lived with it.

An old fashioned gunsmith, someone who can checker and blue and not just assemble parts, could build up by welding or silver solder an extension to the safety. The downside would be the price for this work.

A lot of 1911 parts were created this way before the aftermarket developed.

Excellent suggestion. Told them have three 41's and would need safeties for all of them.

If the gunsmith has been in business for any length of time there is a strong possibility they have several old 1911 thumb safeties in a box under their bench to use as extension donors.

But how well will the 1911 extensions fit?

Raw material to cut and attach to the M41 safety. Saves having to cut grooves on raw stock.

Some several years ago I saw a modified safety that did have a larger shelf, but never IDd a source? I have worked a couple of my "carry" pieces (A 46 and 41) down by smoothing the bump and medium tension on the spring. Have carried the 46 for 35+ years a 5" 60 model. An overloose safety can go ON at the wrong time - seen it more than once in rapid fire leg.

A loose safety on a 41 could be a dangerous thing. A friend of mine that I was shooting with a couple of weeks ago had a scary situation occur. He didn't realize how loose it was. At the time, his 41 failed to fire and he was having a close look at when it fired. He blew the top off his box of 22lr rounds and scared the sh@t out of me. That's when we discovered that the safety was loose and slipped back and forth from the safe position to the fire position. Personally I'm glad that it's hard to move.

What I did with my stiff safety on my new 41, is I got some good spray lube, hit it good with the lubes straw, and found excess red paint under the safety! I hosed it down again with lube, and more came out.....Then I worked the safety about 30 times, using a little more lube. It broke it in nicely, and it isn't as stiff.
Try some lube, and work it a bunch, and see if that works.

When I bought my first Model 41, a 7 incher, I didn't shoot bullseye or any rimfire target game. I found a nice holster made for something else and took some sagebrush strolls with it wanting to pop jackrabbits. Not only is the thumb shelf on the safety small, on my gun it's quite stiff.

I then found a new 5 inch barrel and began a search for a bigger safety for field use. Al Gore hadn't invented the internet yet. I called a bunch of shops that made such parts for 1911's, Hi Powers and S&W centerfire pistols but not only did they never make any, they laughed at the idea.

If someone would make a small run of them, I'd buy one or two.
