I have had the model 915 since 1993? Traded my model 4506 for it at a gun show, I know, I know, don't tell me. But, I have never liked the DA/SA on these guns. I have not put 300 rounds through the gun, still have the box and two mags it came in. I carried a SW640 for years but recently started carrying a taurus PT111 G2 (9mm). I like the DA only pull on the SD 9VE, would use it has a home defense gun and potential ccw if my Taurus has issues. How's this sound so far? (-:

The SD 9VE can be had for about $260 online. Bad trade IMO, I'd rather keep the 915.

Yep, plus the $50. pick up fee. I can buy one at the gun shop in town for $320. But, I have friends telling me to buy an SD 9 and keep the 915 in the truck.

I'd personally buy the Shield or M&P compact over the SD. I rented the SD a few years ago and didn't like it much at all. At the price point it's a good gun. For a few bucks more you can do better.

Definitely keep the 915. Basically it is a 5903, and I have not heard one negative experience with either the 5903 or the all steel 5906. Bad trade in my opinion.

It sounds like a bad joke so far... or even a terrible nightmare when you consider the previous loss of the Model 4506. And I say that as a big fan of the SD9VE (albeit for reasons unique to my hideous state, Moonbat Massachusetts). And the Taurus is simply the icing on that already bad cake! How the heck did that happen? Friends don't let friends buy a Taurus anything!

Please back up a bit, take a deep breath and reconsider everything. There are so many better ways to go here it ain't funny.

Absolutely! MSRP on a new SD is $389. They can be had for under $300. I sold my 915 last year for $450 and I let the guy off cheap. Sell you 915 for cash and go buy a new SD and a nice leather holster and one or two hundred rounds of ammo.

The pt111g2 is a brite spot in taurus line up along with the 709 and tcp pistols . Nothing wrong with them and I would rather carry the PT111g2 over a m&p9c . Guess you know you can us P226 mags as backup mags right ??

I think Taurus has a few good handguns just like s&w has some not so good handguns . IF you just gota have a sd9ve Buy it and make it the truck gun keep the 915 for a house gun if you most . Maybe you will have a wife or child one day that will appreciate for the great handgun it is !!

You have only fired 300 rounds thru your 915 in 23 years . How do you know you won't shoot it well or learn to like it as you yet to spend enough trigger time with it to get to know it !! To write that a SD9VE has a good DA type trigger shows your lack of handgun experience in general . 300 rounds fired is not even enough rounds fired to get use to a new handgun in the first week of ownership much less over 23 years .

Some of use like all types of triggers - DA type triggers , both revolver and pistol , DA /SA , both revolevrs and pistols , finely tuned lite SA and strikers fired pistols as there a number of types there too . Others never give them selves a chance to learn and like different trigger types .

Maybe this will be one of those Live and Learn moments for vboy36.

Yall are killin me. LOL, I know, I can feel your pain about trading the 4506, and believe me the guy at the gun shop was really accommodating. But, big update, I have decided to buy ANOTHER PT111 and KEEP the Model 915. You are right, the 915 is an excellent gun, is in great shape and I will take it to the range again as well.

I don't understand the concept of a "truck gun." If what is meant is "low cost/value gun to have in case it gets stolen", I can understand that concept. When I go to place where this is no legal or possible way to take my handgun inside with me (pro sporting event or concert is a fine example) and I know the vehicle is left in a high property crime area, then YES, I carry a cheaper gun that day and it sits in the car when I am at the event, it's purpose is defensive carry for the drive to and from the event.

But a dedicated car gun or truck gun?!

Seems to me that if it lives in the vehicle, it's chance of getting stolen rockets up. Also, it many or most states (absolutely where I live!) it makes my vehicle a rolling felony for anyone that I might need to drive it, borrow it or drive me somewhere for any reason if they aren't licensed. Furthermore... I carry daily, on-person.

A second, cheaper gun in the vehicle is of little use to me and just seems like a liability.

These are just my thoughts every time I hear "truck gun."

I think; and as I use it...... the origins of the term "truck gun" go back to our parents ..... with a lever action 30-30 or shotgun in a rack inside the rear window or a Model 10 in a gun rug under the seat or glove compartment......... a not overly expensive gun that was always there for "utility" use.......

In the 50s-70s my Dad a police Lt./Capt. but generally had what we today would call a "go bag" he could throw in the car....he might not be carrying his off duty but he had his "truck gun" 4" M&P with a holster in the car..... along with a plug in magnetic bubble-gum flasher, extra 50 rds of .38s, road flairs......


Kind of like the"kit gun" .22 revolver in your "Kit"/ day pack or tackle box.

My "truck gun" is a 23/24 year old 915 that was carried a lot and shot a little ....by a ,so the story goes, security guard....... I got it with 3 magazines for< $300....... If I want to take a gun "along for a ride " where it might get banged around on an tractor, ATV or RZR...... or a float trip down the Allegheny... the Performance Center "Shorty-9" or my 3" 66 with Spegel grips stay home.......

S&W's TDA (traditional double action) pistols - also referred to as DA/SA - are sometimes wasted on some shooters. Nothing 'wrong' with that, of course. As we used to say in the car business (in a more family safe phrasing), there's a butt for every seat.

Why not let the 915 be sold to someone who can appreciate it?

I agree that the idea of a "tuck gun" (presuming leaving a gun inside an unattended vehicle is lawful in your state) being somehow of lesser quality, or less user-friendly, is an oxymoron of high order.

If it's not viable for first string use and employment, how does where it's stored/kept somehow change it's perceived usefulness or practical usage? It'll somehow become "better", if kept inside a vehicle ... and you'll somehow "use it better" when accessing it from the vehicle?

Rationalizations are often just weak excuses that can't be supported by facts or prudent thinking, let alone justified by common sense.

If you don't like the 915, let it be sold to someone who will like and appreciate it.

If you later regret it? Well, that's life. Some of life's lessons seem occasionally better retained as the result of making bad decisions.

A "truck gun" to me is not a derogatory term. It's a reliable, accurate firearm that can be left in a vehicle without worrying about it's finish, either because it is already worn and beat up, or it is made from stainless or other metal treatment or coating.

I know some use the term in a derogatory manner, but I think they are ignorant about what a WORKING gun is.

Back in the old west, a "truck gun" would have been a Winchester carbine kept in a scabbard on one's horse, in all kinds of weather. My Winchester catalog of 1899 says a Model 1873, 1892 or 1894 carbine was $17.50. That was over a half month's wages for many people, so these would not have been referred to derogatorily as a cheap gun.

And staying on topic, I say keep your 915 and buy whatever else you want. I can't see trading your gun at a loss.

What the point of a truck gun? I bought my shield to protect myself. It doesn't protect my when it's in my truck.

Sounds like the OP is keeping the 915. Great! I just sent mine off to Novaks for a low-mount sight and it came back even nicer than before. This is a fine example of a traditional double action pistol and worth keeping or, if it must be sold, sold to someone who will appreciate it!

I can see the value of a S&W SD9/40VE pistol as well. They are robust, inexpensive, and reliable. Not a bad gun to knock around with, but its famous long pull trigger makes it hard to shoot with the finesse available in the 915.

I too agree that leaving a gun in a truck (or car) is not a sound practice; if left there too long, it is liable to not function when called upon. And I don't like the idea of leaving a gun where it can be stolen or get into the hands of a kid.

My favorite full size 9mm handgun is the Model 915. My favorite full size 45 ACP handgun is the Model 4506. Nothing wrong with a SD 9VE but, commensurate with the price, it is inferior to the other two firearms above by a wide margin. Good luck!
