Default Model 39-2 white lettering...

I am trying to find out if S&W ever filled in the serial number etc on the frame of the 39-2 with white. I have a 39-2 from 1976 that has the lettering on the frame filled in. I bought the gun new and did not fill in the lettering. The gun then went to my brother and he says he did not do it. HMMMMM. I can not find any information that S&W did, any comments?

According to my pops (who was selling guns at the time), it was not uncommon for the gun shops to fill in the lettering with white to make the "pop" more. Hence the original owner would think factory and it was, in fact, not done at the factory.

I use white tire marking crayon, which is actually a solid paint stick, from an auto parts store. That's probably what the dealer did too.

I use a white grease pencil which is also called a "china marking pencil". A liberal application of gun oil and a tooth brush scrub will remove it.
