My first Semi S&W was a Gen 2 S&W 539 needing desperate refurb sitting forlorn at a local Pawn Shop in 2012.

It took a bit but the bug finally hit me hard two years ago, and since then I have acquired the following: 459, 469, 5906, 6906, 4006, 1006, 915, and a 410.

I'm still waiting to find and buy my first 1st Gen pistol to join the family.

I got a late start. My first semi-auto purchase was a Gen3 S&W model 910 in May 2017. A week later, I bought my only Gen2, a model 469.

Since then, I've filled my gun safe with Gen3 9s and 40s. I need a 12-step group.

My only S&W semi-automatic is my 1983(?) vintage Model 469, no box, "finish challenged," that I picked up earlier this year (2019) for $275.00 with 2 magazines and 300 rounds of Blazer Brass.

I've picked up a few magazines with grip adapters since I got it. I'm looking at some later generation 6906s and 5906s at the LGS.

39-2, 639 (what a tank) and a 3904. I like the feel of the single stack grip.

I was late to the dance. First 3rd gen was a 1076 in about 2010. Next was a 4516-1 about a year later. I know I could have done better but that’s all that was available.

My first S&W semi was a 4053 that i bought in 2007. Then in 2015 I picked up a 645 in January, a 39-2 in July, and another in November. In early 2016 I bought the 3913, and in 2018 the CS40. I have since sold the 645, the CS40, and the 4053. I was slow to get into semi autos.

If you read my intro to this discussion, you and I are odd ducks! Our first ever S&W semi-auto pistols were 10mm guns. That isn't normal!

But BlueDot37 has us beat, his first S&W was the 845!

My first pistol was a 469 bought few years ago. Sales guy picked the best out of three and knocked some off the price $369. Looking for info led me here and after being enabled went back and bought a 5906. After a few months stupidly sold the 469 ,there may be a image archived somewhere. Still have 5906 along with 9mm M&P's and 686

I began this voyage just over 2 years ago. My first was a 3914.

A few weeks later, a 639 was listed locally. Within 45 minutes of the listing, I was cleaning it on the kitchen table. Recently, I bought a 59 from the same fellow.

A while later, NCBeagle and I were wandering through a local show. I turned around and he was yards behind looking at a gun in a display case. He’d found me a 39-2 in blue.

What a long strange trip it’s been.

I got a late start in the S&W world myself, back in 2005 I purchased a 457 since I began really started liking the .45 platform and already had a couple of 1911s. I was looking for something a bit more compact than the two Colts. I wound up trading the 457 for a Ruger Security Six in .357 since I had gotten a good deal on a 4516-2 and didn't have a wheel gun in the stable. Just recently picked up a 3913 to make two third gens I have and that one has quickly become a carry piece also.

The 3906 was likely out of production when you got it in 1994. These are fantastic and scarce pistols, I love the two that I have and I had one of them out on Monday, a hundred rounds through it on to steel plates, these are just great guns.

The 39-2 feels better in the hand than a 3906, but the 3906 is a whole lot of fun to shoot as they are so heavy.

Thumbs up

I bought a new 39 back in the '60s, followed by a long succession of 1st., 2nd. and 3rd. Gen guns. After that first 39, I had 39-2, a 41, 539, 639, 3906, 3913, 5906, 1006, 1026, 1076, PC 945, 952, 952-1, alloy and all stainless CQBs, 4" and 5" DPA 5906s, etc. More than one of most of these since that first 39 50+ years ago. Wish I'd kept more of these, but still have a few 3rd. gen guns...

Bought my first 39 in 1978 or so. In the early 90s my ex sold it because I " never shot it" sigh. Now I have a better wife and 3 model 39s to make up for the one I lost, one in beautiful nkckel....love the 39s and will buy more....a used 59.......also have a 669, bought new in the mid 80s, which is a sweet shooter and a 4006 from CHiPs...heavy as a brick but a straight shooter...still keeping an eye out for another 39

My 469. From what I found out, this serial number predates any others.

My first S/A was a Browning HP right after Serpico came out, but as it wasn't an approved model when I changed employment so I went back to revolvers.
My first S/W would have been a 3913 around 1989-90, used it as a back up and off duty gun, was still a revolver guy.
The next 2 were a PPC 9 and the 5906 IDPA model when they came out, but strictly for competition. Then a 4506 when they were approved.
After that I cant keep tract just accumulated them as they came along.
I always wished the PC had made a steel 6906 (shorty 9) but mainly because I wanted one for the off duty gun match. I know I could have converted a 356 TSW but it wouldn't have been approved and my Shorty 9 shot X ring at 25 yards and still does after being carried for 20 years, without the extra weight.
I really wish the P/C had made a 3913 PC version, that would be a perfect gun IMO. My PC 9s were all ordered with a regular D/C/ safety as I am left handed. I don't think that makes them anything special, I believe they sent the single side extended safeties with them , have to check.
Here is the herd. Minus a model 52-2 I got for retirement. No plastic M&Ps but I have a couple they just don't go in this picture...

Like many here, my first 1st Gen was a 39-2 which I aquired in the mid 80s. Traded it for a model 59 shortly after........which got traded for.......something...

A 645 I picked up in the 90s remains my only 2nd gen gun. I have a Barsto barrel for it and keep meaning to find a gunsmith to do some work on it. It would be a nice custom 45.

My first 3rd gen was a 910 that I was issued. I subsequently bought it and ran it up to 29K rounds before the frame cracked. I got my moneys worth out of that fine pistol.

My "first" 3rd gen I purchased was my 4516-3 LE special order. I picked it up in......2003?.....2004?.... Great pistol that I still have and still shoot periodically. I too wish the Performance Center had made an all steel 4516 piece, before they went out of business. Regards 18DAI

I bought one for my lady because it was a single stack and thinner than my 659. But it was far too heavy for her so I sold it. Dang ! I wish I had that one back.

Better late than never. Wasn’t really a fan of the SW autos. I did like the 1066 and 1006’s and figured that I would get one eventually but it was nothing that I really needed to have! Then a CHP 4016 TSW was offered for a trade and I said what the heck. It had some LE history on it and I thought well why not add an FBI 1076 to go with her. Then I figured heck how about an LAPD 4506....then I had to stop! Well after a 1026 to fill my 1006 style passion from years ago. Anyhow, these were all picked up about 6 months ago and I had to indeed stop. They are awesome guns and have history but didn’t want to start another collection!!!! Especially since the prices are starting to soar!!!! Still catch myself looking for a nice blued or carbon steel SW auto!!! Almost bit on a 915! Had to shake my head!!!

Default Late starting for 3rd Gen

I am sorry to admit that I have never been a 3rd Gen fan until recently. I fell in love when my dad brought home an M39 back in 1970. Needless to say I was hooked on 1st Gen. It is safe to say I was sold on 2nd Gen since they were very similar.

Dec. 1990 saw my first purchase, a nickle M59 no dash followed in Apr. 1991 with a nickle M39-2. Feb of 1992 I was able to talk my buddies M645 off of him as my first 2nd Gen.

Four years later I found my first grail gun, an M745 in Feb of 1996. My second grail gun and prised possession, a 1st Gen. M52 no dash, took until July of 1997 to acquire.

My next 2nd Gen. took 20 years of waiting. In Feb. 2018 I was finally able to replace the M645 that was foolishly sold 15 years ago.

That leaves my first 3rd Gen in May 2018. A solid M4003 with hopes of finding an affordable M1006 and M41 or 46 to finish out my automatic collection.

In 1978 I was 19 years old and bought a new M-39-2 from the Tulsa Gunshow and I traded a well worn Ruger 22 auto and a little over a hundred in cash for it. To this day it was one of the most beautiful handguns I have ever owned and definitely the prettiest auto pistol. It had a good, smooth double action trigger and the single action trigger was slightly squishy but nice and light.

Like JoeinTexas pointed out, I can’t recall this stuff - but reading those of you who can makes a fun thread.

When I was a young fellow we were all REVOLVER shooters, and normally that meant M19s, M27s, M57s, and M29s. S&W autos (39s, and later, 59s) weren’t taken as serious guns. Aside from S&W revolvers, “serious gun” meant 1911, and that was about all! All that said, I’ve always tinkered (sometimes secretly ) with S&W centerfire semi-autos, probably since the late ‘70s. Only when the 3913 came along did I actually start to warm up to them.

They are like Lay's potato chips, you cannot have just one.

You can't have just one. While I was in college, my dad had moved away for a new job so I hadn't seen him in a while. I had acquired a couple of more guns since he had seen me. He looked at the collection and declared that I had an arsenal. I replied "Not yet". He just about hit the floor laughing...

Here's my current 3rd gen collection, plus the 2nd gen 645. I keep telling Mrs. cnette01, just one more, only one more...

I found this forum 2014 looking for info on my first pistol a 469 , couple weeks later bought my 5906 . I few months later had to sell the 469 which I kinda regret . When funds available bought a new Shield for EDC , still have both pistols.

My first was a 3913LS that I bought for my wife back in 1991 or 1992...LOL I have bought them all for my wife.. I guess I am talking with friends here and admit that it really was for me. I Just loved the stainless with the grey grips. This was my first purchase after getting my CWL-CWP. It has never jammed over the years and I still carry it once and a while with 100% confidence.

My first ever semi auto was a 2nd Gen 639 bought new in the mid-80s, had round t-guard and adjustable sights. Been a 2nd gen fan ever since.

My first 2nd Gen was a 669 that I bought on July 9, 1987, this was my CCW until I obtained my 3953.

My 3rd Gens came next, a 3953 and 5964, both of which I bought on July 15, 1991.

The 669 is long gone, as once I shot the DAO 3rd Gens, I sold/traded off almost all of my SA/DA pistols, converting to DAO for CCW.

Included a little slice of history, with my receipt from the 669.

Very soon after the 39-2 was released I purchased one from Jovino.
It was one of many I've owned over the last 50 years.
I was also fond of the 59.
Soon after moving to Texax several years ago I made a trade for 5 NIB 39-2(3 Blue,2 Nickle)All gone now.
I have only one unaltered 39-2 now that goes to the range every now and then and is my nightstand choice. It groups like an accurized 1911.

My first introduction to S&W semi autos was in the 80's when my dad purchased a 39-2 that he carried on duty as a deputy sheriff. I was 10 years old and he would take me on the weekend to go shooting with the other deputies. It was the first center fire handgun that I was taught to shoot. Fast forward to about 15 years ago, I noticed plastic guns flying of the shelves of gun stores, pawn shops, and gun shows for $500-$700 while 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gen S&W semi autos were collecting dust with $300-$400 price tags, and they seemed plentyful. I bought my first S&W semi auto, a 459 for about $375 OTD at a gun show. I discovered the fun of hunting for them in pawn shops, LGS, and gun shows. I also found a love for old Marlin lever action rifles that were cheap and abundant at the time. I then found a 5906 that became my second S&W and my first 3rd gen. Following that, I bought a 4506, and a CS9. I then traded a Marlin 336 to my Dad for his 39-2, and that was my first 1st gen S&W. A couple years later I went through a divorce and sold all my S&W pistols except my Dad's 39-2. Fast forward to now, and I am into collecting these guns again, but finding out that they are not as cheap and abundant as they were 15 years ago. I have been able to replace the CS9 and 459, so now I have one of each generation, 39-2, 459, and CS9. I am still looking to replace the 5906 and 4506 that I regret selling.

I got lucky because in the early to mid 2000's I finally had some money and started buying them used around Boise when they were only $250 to $400. I wish I wouldn't have passed on several of them because back then I really only wanted to buy them if they had the box and papers. The price now is so crazy but I am still buying and have really paid a little to much for some 10mm's but still were found locally and was able to pick them up for less than what we are seeing on the auction web sites. Happy hunting!

I have no 1st Generation pistols currently. I had a 52 (no dash) and a 41 (not an ABC1234 serial #gun). IDK if they would count as 1st Gen. Sold both after my brother died and I got away from shooting Bullseye.

I have a 469, so that's one 2nd Generation.

I currently have 10 3rd Generation.

3914NL
3914DAO
5906
5946 NYPD
4006TSW CHP
4013TSW
4043

4516-1
4566TSW WVPSC

And always on the hunt for something interesting.

Default 3rd gens!

Sold the 4506 and 4516 a few years ago.

Still have a pretty nice, 64' 39-2!

Discussions evolve and I understand that, but just as a refresher, we are't cataloging every S&W 1-2-3rd Gen we have...

The topic is to give a back story to the first pistol that you ever bought (or came in to) that was a S&W 1st Generation pistol. And same for the first 2nd Gen that you ever got. And tell us about the first 3rd Gen that gave you the bug.

There's something off here. If it's from 1964, the frame would be stamped Model 39, not a dash-2. It should have the long old style extractor. If it's a 39-2 then it would have the more modern extractor and likely be from 1970 or later.

Sorry, got carried away

The 52 no dash was my 1st experience I had w/S&W centerfire autos. My brother gave it to me after we started shooting Bullseye (ditto the 41). After he died, I lost my passion for shooting for a while, and stopped Bullseye all together, and sold both.

After joining this forum, I read all the good things about 3rd Generation pistols. While poking around behind the counter of a LGS, I found a 3913NL. I shot it, liked, it , and bought it. I didn't know much about it until I got home and read "the bible". So that was my 1st 3rd Gen. I later sold the 3913NL because I found a 3914NL and I liked the black finish better. But that was the pistol that started my love of 3rd Generations.

The only 2nd Gen I have is a 469. I got it because it was made the year I began my Senior year in High School, and also because it was blue vs. the 6906 I had that was stainless. Also it had its original box with all the paperwork and tools. Turns out I liked it better that the 6906, which I ended up selling.

And that's the story.

In 1993 I bought a 1026, still have it. (See username), I have been collecting 3rd gen's and anything 10mm ever since. No 1st gens. Two 469's. I am particularly drawn to the 3rg gen frame mounted de-cockers. I have all of the models but two and some I have duplicates of. I am sure I won't see a 6924 in my lifetime considering the SW bible says only five were made.

In the Spring of 1979 I bought a near mint Model 39-2 from a departing small town police chief (who was going to study to become an undertaker). Since it was for my father who was left handed, I got him an aftermarket ambi safety for it, and that's the way it remained until his passing and it being left to me. I have since replaced the safety with a Gen 2 factory ambi safety and have also added the factory optional adjustable rear sight.

The finished product was so nice and had such sentimental value I bought a 639 which led to the building of my Franken-Ballard, but you asked about my first, so this is another whole story for another thread.
