Looking into buying a lnib 410s with crimson trace grips installed at factory. He says make an offer. But what's fair?

Do yourself a favor and buy something else. The grips are worth more then the gun. Try a 5906 or some other steel frame

Check the asking price on GB, then adjust downward from there. If people are bidding, that is a good indicator of what it’s worth.

Okay, my take isn’t quite as bleak, but it sounds like you are looking for real advice here. Fact is, there are some things that form the market price and have a large affect on used gun prices.

DA/SA pistols aren’t necessarily the hottest pistols on the market. Out of production S&W guns have a following, but the 410 may occupy the bottom spot of all the 3rd Gens. It’s also a .40cal which is definitely the least sought-after mainstream pistol caliber these days.

If that isn’t enough, the 410 is the “Value Line” offering that was a bare bones budget gun when it was marketed.

If the pistol were brand new in box, unfired, all original stuff with it and show quality, you’d have to be a highly respected dealer to get $450 out of it.

If you are talking used, no box, showing wear... market price is probably $200.

We love and discuss all the 1-2-3rd Gens and there will certainly be some folks who love the 410s also, but if we ranked all of them by popularity, the 410s would make a strong case for a very low spot.

If you are looking to start collecting S&W pistols, start with a 39-2!

Another great pistol at a helluva low price but fantastic value is the 915.

The recent offerings of CHP 4006 pistols are a great buy, but probably not for you as they are in .40cal.

The 4566 is a much-loved pistol that they made in high volume.

Obviously there are dozens more great S&W 1-2-3rd Gens, but this short list are very popular for good reason and all are easy to find for not a lot of cash.

It is always nice to have another S&W fan join us. Accumulating Smiths can be a worthwhile adventure and this is the place to get answers to your questions.

You'll find this helpful... https://www.luckygunner.com/lounge/g...omatic-models/

If you decide to venture into the S&W Gen3 40s, may I suggest that you focus first on the single stack models which were built on a 45 frame and have an under bored 45 barrel. They are nice shooters!

Watching the big auction sites and studying the pictures of the offerings for the condition will give you a better understanding of price and value.

The Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson 4th Edition is a nice tool to have handy when evaluating possible choices.

Buy a bigger gun safe than you believe you need. ENJOY

Yessir thanks URIT. I have downloaded the lucky gunner pic for more reference. And for the most part I want to start with first and second gen models. But I am addicted so I find myself researching them all like a madman..I'm def late to the party when it comes to smith autos.

Heck I would give you $200 for one. I am sure it would be a good shooter. I wonder if anyone collects value line pistols. Would be fun and cheap to do. Also some people buy the value line pistols simply for the single sided safety to put on another gun. FWIW.

Back in the last century I knew a hand full of people who collected "value line guns". Used European 32 ACP pistols were common and comparatively inexpensive. For awhile I collected US made 16ga sxs shotguns. Nobody wanted 16ga shotguns and I cold find them MUCH cheaper than 12s or 20s. I had 24 or 25 different shotguns in the collection until the sporting clays discovered why so many upland hunters who preferred sxs shotguns stuck with the 16s ga. At that [point I sold off all but a couple. Some people collect the old HR and Iver Johnson topbreaks.

I once had a guy who worked for me who collected Jefferson nickles. Most of his examples probably cost him less than a $1 but he was determined to find the best example of every variation minted. Seemed off to me but it was a hobby he could afford and he found it very satisfying. People collect what they can afford and/or catches their interest. I have three High Points, to some that would brand me a HP collector and to some it would brand me a lunatic. I have many more S&Ws but the HPs fill a need and so stay around.

I agree with every thing quoted as to price and lack of popularity. From a strict collector view, they are not what you want. The fact that 410s are cheap makes them a great "truck or vehicle" gun. I have one stashed in both my trucks. If they get stolen I have not lost a valuable, hard to replace item. The higher capacity magazines are easy to find and cheap. As to caliber, remember the 40 S&W grew out of a hard lesson learned: the Miami/FBI shoot out. The improvement in 9mm ammo since than has not made the 40 S&W less effective. If you hand load, 40 S&W once fired brass is plentiful and cheap. My 610 revolver and my 1911 10mm with spare 40S&W barrel both love 40 S&W reloaded ammo. Although not as cheap as 9mm, factory loaded ammo is dropping in price. Just some food for thought before you pass on a bargain. Of course, it ain't a bargain if you don't have a use for it.

I’ve got two. Both I bought a couple years ago because they each were a screaming deal. .40S&W > 9mm IMHO
