It is nickel plated.
The 39-2 is a "1st generation" pistol.
Smith & Wesson did not start producing semi-auto pistols in stainless steel until the introduction of the "2nd generation" models (the 639) in 1982.

A324xxx makes it likely 1976 production.

A few tips on spotting nickel versus stainless in S&W 2-3rd Gens. As JohnHL says, no stainless until the 2nd Gen pistols arrived. The nickel guns seem to have more of a "mirror" finish while stainless tends to be more even but without the ability to reflect an image. Also, the nickel pistols have black controls (thumb decock, slide stop, trigger, hammer) where these same parts on the older stainless guns were a matte silver color... (although hammer and trigger only went black when they went to MIM)

Nice looking pistol!
