I tried to send Model 28 into the shop three years ago. S&W said it was to old to work on... so I sold it off.

When I bought my FS M&P45, I was under the impression that it was a DA only pistol, similar to the trigger on my DAO 4586. Wow, was I ever disappointed. Last month I asked S&W if they could install a thumb safety for me. I don't care for the combination of a light trigger without a safety. The hinged plastic trigger may satisfy lawyers, but not me.

"Dear Customer,
Adding safetys to guns that came without safetys is not a service we provide here at the factory. If your experiencing a defect with your trigger i would recommend to have the gun sent in to be evaluated."

I'll probably end up selling the M&P45 too.

Wow. Not sure what is going on in your case, but I have several 3rd gens including a mint 5906 that I've probably put 2000 rounds through. A month ago or so the extractor tip broke off. I called S&W and in 5 minutes had a pre-paid return label sent to me by email. Boxed it up and sent it in. Less than 2 weeks later it came back by FedEx fixed. Looks like they went over it pretty well.

^and ANOTHER perfect example of the absolutely mixed bag of experiences folks have with S&W customer service.

Can be amazing, as posted above very clearly. Can be entirely underwhelming, as we have seen far too many times.

This is well established. Seems like this is just how it's likely to be. It's the phone call lottery, never know what you will get with them.

I'm not a hater. I *just* bought a like-new 3953, because I like 3953s, but I did it understanding that I'm pretty much on my own for parts or service. That's also why I haven't gotten rid of my Glock pistols.
It's the forum version of Whack a Mole. Every other week someone posts about an issue with a 3rd Gen and the gamers play Whack a S&W.

S&W didn't repair my brand new unfired Model 41. They replaced it with a brand new one and this one, the barrel was dinged up in 3 places and the blued finish was covered with bare spots.

Some, but not a lot of stock left. MidwayUSA and Brownells each have some parts, but not a lot and as they go out of stock, they generally say "No Back order".

They machined it wrong. When looking at the back of the gun on how the 3 parts the barrel, slide and frame line up, the barrel was sticking way out to the right. This made the barrel sit canted pointing to the left. It only took them nearly 3 years to replace it.

The rear sight on my 629-6 broke. Called S&W and they wanted the entire gun sent to them, 3 month wait. I said no and bought a complete rear sight assembly fro Brownells. Simple fix, only waited 6 days for sight.

Please do not take this the wrong way, as it is NOT intended that way, but part of the problem may be in where you live. I've noticed in firearms and other goods, our northern neighbors get the short straw when it comes to customer service, not to mention pricing. Australia seems to suffer likewise. I don't have an explanation for this, other than possibly red tape.

Since I did mention price, I'll throw in this little story. Years ago, I was assigned to work sporadically in Toronto. While there, I visited a large book store and found a book printed in England. I was used to seeing books printed in the US priced one or more dollars more in Canada than in the US, but was surprised to see the one printed in England carrying a price for a few dollars more in Canada than the US price. At the time, the exchange rate between the US and Canada wasn't that much, so it appeared to be a case of the Crown taking advantage of their western cousins.

There was a thread about a month ago where it was mentioned that Apex might start making some repair parts for 3rd Gens. There were no details, but it's intriguing nonetheless.

There are still holsters available for sale as well as Hogue grips. I don't know that there ever were a lot of grip options for the 3rd Gens other than that.

HELLO FRIENDS!! HERE IN GREECE, PAPERWORK AND LEGAL DIFFICULTIES MAKE IT IMPOSSIBLE TO SHIP A GUN THROUGH MAIL BACK AND FORTH TO ANY DESTINATION WITHIN, NEVERMIND ABROAD. SO, BUYING A PISTOL/REVOLVER, MEANS YOU ARE STUCK WITH IT AND AT BEST, WHAT THE LOCAL DEALER MAY PROVIDE. SO, WHETHER OR NOT SMITH&WESSON OR ANY OTHER COMPANY OFFERS AFTERSALES SERVICE, HERE IT IS PRETTY MUCH USELESS. WITH THIS IN MIND, WE ARE ON OWR OWN, WITH THE EXCEPTION THAT SOME COMPETENT GUNSMITHS WILL MOST PROBABLY DUPLICATE A SMALL PART IF IT BREAKS. MY MAJOR CONCERN ABOUT WEAR AND TEAR ON MOST GUNS I HAVE, WOULD BE THEIR SPRINGS. I HAVE FOUND HISTORICALLY THAT THEY ARE THE WEAKEST LINK IN PREETY MUCH ANY KIND OF GUN LONG TERM SPEAKING. FOR THIRD GEN, IT SEEMS THAT THE SPRINGS ARE STILL OUT THERE FOR SOMEONE TO BUY. A SPARE FIRING PIN, AND A SPARE EXTRACTOR WOULD BE THE MOST IMPORTANT FOR ME TO FIND. UNFORTUNATELLY, BARRELS OR FRAMES ARE WHAT THEY ARE, BUT THEN AGAIN, PERSONALLY, I CAN NOT AFFORD THE BULLETS TO WEAR OUT EITHER ONE IN THIS LIFETIME. MAGAZINES, SOME ARE EASY TO FIND, SOME ARE GETTING SCARCE INDEED. AS FOR THEIR PRICE, YES, THEY CLIMB INDEED, BUT HERE IN EUROPE THEY GO FOR 70$ FOR THE 59 SERIES STAINLESS, PLUS SHIPPING. STILL CHEAPER THAN WALTHER OR HK THOUGH. ACCESORIES ON THE OTHER HAND, ESPECIALLY FOR THE SQUARE TRIGUERGUARDS THAT I LIKE THE MOST, ARE IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND! FINALLY, REGARDLESS OF AFTERSALES SERVICE, ACCESORIES OR PARTS AVAILABILITY. I WOULD STILL PICK A 3RD GEN OVER ANYTHING CURRENTLY PRODUCED, EVEN IF IT MEANT PAYING MORE FOR SAY A USED 5906 THAN A NEW BANG TUPPERWEAR, OR THE LEFT HANDED USER UN-FRIENDLY STAMPED STEEL SIG SAUERS. IN MY OPINION, IT IS A MUCH BETTER DESIGNED AND WAY OVERTHOUGHT AND OVERBUILT PRODUCT. AND YES, MOST OF MY SHOOTING HAS BEEN DONE WITH JUST ABOUT ANYTHING ELSE UNDER THE SUN. 3RD GENS AROUND HERE ARE VERY SCARCE. AND THOSE WHO HAVE THEM DO NOT GET RID OF THEM THAT EASY. THERE IS A GERMAN AUCTION SITE, WHERE 3RD GENS APPEAR VERY SELDOM, AND THEY GET HIGHER PRICES THAN EQUIVELANT SIG SAUERS AT TIMES!! PC GUNS GO FOR ABOUT 1100 TO 1300$!!! APPARENTLY THE GERMANS FOUND OUT ABOUT THESE GUNS' WORTHINESS. SO, ALL IN ALL, EVERY MACHINE MAY BRAKE. EVERY MACHINE MIGHT NEED PARTS HARD TO FIND. EVERY PISTOL MIGHT SUFFER A CATASTROFIC FAILURE. I WOULD RATHER TAKE MY CHANCES WITH A 3RD GEN OVER ANYTHING ELSE. JUST MY TWO CENTS FRIENDS.

Obviously S&W have dropped the ball on customer service. I collect S&W 41s, 46s and 52s. Since I don't trust S&W, I've stocked up on a good supply of S&W parts in order to do my own repairs. It's the only way to go.

I don't see it as dropping the ball.. realistically, what company fixes and keep parts in stock for anything 10 of age or older. Try ordering a part for your 10 year old car from a dealer..

Your right Jack. My car just turned 7 and is in excellent shape. When it gets to old, I'll be hitting the scrape yard for parts. You see I'd rather spend my hard earned money on guns, not cars.

To be so lucky to own a car thats only 7 years of age. My new to me car is 1s a 1999 STS and my truck is a 1972 GMC. My spare car is a 1984 Seville but its in basically flawless condition as I bought it in 1985. I don't like car or gun payments so I just keep rebuilding the old cars and trucks as then they go back up in value again.

Correct me if I am wrong but you can still get parts for your remington 1100. How about your ruger MKII .22.
So in 10 years you wont get parts for your M&P 2.0. That really makes me want to buy one.

Toyota. I brought my 2006 Tundra in a couple of weeks ago because a stabilizer bar link broke. The service writer offered me two options. Leave the truck overnight until they could get an OEM part, or they could put in a Moog replacement part in a couple of hours. I opted for the Moog, because it was less expensive than the OEM part. In another several months, it will need a timing belt. I expect they'll do that job as well.

Same goes for my son's 2005 Tacoma and my wife's 2006 Highlander.

A 10 year old gun isn't very old at all. There are still a lot of 3rd Gen guns in private hands, some are still used as personally owned duty guns (even form members here), and a few agencies still use them.

No one forced S&W to offer and promote a "lifetime warranty" on firearms starting back in 1989, but they did. Even if they don't want to extend that warranty to second and subsequent owners, they could still offer service for a price.

A cynic might say that they have their hands full repairing the lower quality products the now sell under their brand, but everyone knows I'm not a cynic.

Life goes on guys... things change ... I don't buy 3rd gen guns for a reason and love my fantastic plastics!! In my line of business, auto repair.. things change, you can get the basic, keep it alive parts for older cars... but when you need the odd ball parts... call the salvage yards... same deal for your old 3rd gens... hope the aftermarket has your parts...

Gary.. is that why you're selling the 3rd gens..

No, I'm selling two that I have replaced with TSW versions. An upgrade.

I think that the only irreplaceable part on my 3rd Gen guns would be a frame. Whether or not they are new is a different question.
