Default 4506 Super

If anyone has an interest in the .45 Super it is very easy to convert a 4506...18 lb recoil spring and "extra power" firing pin spring and it functions perfectly. I am now shooting 200 grain cast swc's at a chronographed 1,234 fps from the 5" gun. This load has performed quite well on deer too...

Going up just 1# from factory isn't much of a difference considering 45 Super's have up to 36% more pressure than a standard 45ACP.

In my 4586 I use a 22# ISMI flat spring (GLC-22), on a factory guide rod turned-down to .255", along with a standard mainspring along and extra power magazine & firing pins springs. (This setup is similar to my 1076's but with a heavier mainspring)

Most 1911 projects up the recoil spring to around 28#-32#. I went with a heavier mainspring & a slight lower recoil, in addition to a small radius firing pin stop, in my Government Series 70.

I only load 185gr JHPs (shallower seating depth than the 200gr.) in S-L 45 Super brass in mine. Using Power Pistol and the reloading data from "Project 45 Super", 185gr. JHPs are documented as hitting 1403 fps from a 5" 1911. (Buffalo Bore lists 1330 fps for theirs.)

The same handloads work fine in 325/625 revolvers using S-L 45 Super or S-L 45AR brass.

Well my stock recoil spring was 14 lbs and the stock spring for the 1006 is supposed to be 17 lbs so I felt ok with an 18 lb spring that would not batter my gun so much and possibly affect feed from the stock mags. Remember the 4505 slide is very heavy and doesn't need a whole lotta spring to limit the time before unlock..

My load was 10 grains of Power Pistol and bullet was a hard cast 200 grain swc. I doubt that I would have achieved the velocities I measured had I been using jacketed HP's...

The 14# spring is the target/wadcutter spring. The standard hard ball spring is 16#, the same on the 4506/4586 & the 1006/1076 are 17#.

The 5" bbl. 4506 slide/barrel combo weighs 18.7 oz & my 4-1/4" bbl. 4586's weighs 18.0 oz.

My 4-1/4" bbl. 1076 slide/barrel combo weighs 19.0 oz. Remember the 10mm has a smaller bore so there's more metal left than with the larger .45 hole. Same reason a 41 Mag weighs more than a 44 Mag of the same model/barrel length.

My 4586 setup for 45 Super chambers/ejects standard pressure (I don't load any powder puffs) loads just fine. My 45 Super 1911 has even heavier springs & the same applies for it.

I load 11.3gr/Power Pistol under a 185gr XTP & 10.4gr/P-P with a 200gr XTP. I prefer using the 185gr.

Power Pistol is my favorite for this but LongShot is a close second.

I still submit you're under-sprung & are likely battering your frame.

Time will tell, hopefully he's taking Before pics
of his slide & stops, so he can look back and check.
