1913 .35 Auto Serial Number info
I am in the process of acquiring a real nice 1913 .35 S&W Auto and am trying to find out when it was made/shipped from the factory. The SN is 5136. Where can I find out this information?
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!

I don't claim to be an expert, or even marginally knowledgeable, regarding the .35 Semi-automatic Pistol, i.e. Model of 1913, and I did not stay at Holiday in last night, but I do have a SCSW (Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson) 4th edition and here's what I can pass on (not directly quoted):
Serial number range of 1-8350 over its 9 year production run from 1913-1921.
There were a number of design changes, 8 total referenced in the SCSW, referred to as type 1, type 2, ...... and finally type 8.
If I'm reading the SCSW correctly, you have a Type 6, roughly serial number range 3874-6601, which is described as, "The breech bolt assembly and the recoil spring guide tunnel were changed from round to square, the sides of the breechblock were extended downward to overlap the frame thus eliminating the guide block. The changes were completed by serial number 6600."

Thank you very, very much for the information. If it is piblished in SCSW, it is accurate enough for me...

A good guess would be early 1917. Factory letter would confirm date and to whom it was shipped to, of course.

The .35 S&W is discussed in the section "Hand Ejectors 1886-1961" up above.
